  • Adventurer Ben Fogle has put himself in some really dangerous situations around the world. But he says it was in rural Buckinghamshire that he actually nearly lost his life after almost being hit by a delivery van going 60mph on a single-track road. The adventure is now calling for slower speed limits on country roads, where the majority of road deaths in the UK occur.

    20mph would be insane on places with a lot of single track roads. For example on the Isle of Mull almost all roads are single track, to go from Tobermory to Fionnphort takes 90 minutes. Its only 50 miles. If you reduced those roads to 20mph you'd be looking at 4 hours...

    Maybe law should also be changed enforcing delivery companies to plan routes on a 20 mph algorithm.

  • @kayberry6292
    @kayberry6292 24 дня назад +1

    There is a law against inconsiderate driving (even when under the speed limit) which carries a penalty of a fine up to £5000 plus a driving ban. But it isn't easy to prosecute without a police witness. In truth, the national speed limit should never have been applied to narrow residential lanes without footpaths and the law should be amended. Some drivers will still exceed any speed limit of course.

    It's common sense for that lane to be 20mph considering the lack of space. Any inaction by those with power to immediately rectify the situation should be treated as criminal negligence.

      @brianwebb5921 you're allowed to disagree and make your case, I'm talking about people in power for example a doctor with the medicine to save a patients life but decides to do nothing after hearing concerns. Or a police man ignoring a womans concern about a stalker and does nothing then she dies the next day. This is the same thing and there should be criminal consequences for the person who didn't do their job therefore people died as a result.

    I totally agree. Speed bumps will slow them down Delivery drivers should not be pressured to drive so fast/make deliveries and so rural one track roads without pavements should have either footpath alternatives made or speed limit changed. But what about horse riders?
    Everyone has equal rights to use these roads.
    My daughter yesterday refused to cycle on rural roads as she feels unsafe. I pushed on and did the ride and sure enough several idiots on the road whizzing close by me at speed on rural roads. Slow down people!! You wanna go to jail as a murderer?

    Ben is generous saying he doesn't blame the drivers and it is a clever point to make about pressure on drivers if the Dept of Transport is watching. But there is a moral point here. The driver by law has to drive with care and full control to meet any hazard. And there is the aspect of moral consideration too. Most of us, even if measured by an algorithm tracking us, would not be prepared to drive in the way some do. Where there are houses there are children. It is incredibly reckless to drive in that way.

      Pedestrians also should not be walking care free down the middle of any road. The name "road" implies vehicular traffic.

    Too many restrictions so when you can do 40 or 60 you want to do that speed. Especially if you have a powerful car. The roads are too congested and slow drivers in a 60 zone is just as dangerous as a speeding driver. You get other cars overtaking the slow drivers.

    Maybe they should install a pavement if its a country road that is a main walking route for the village.
    Its not a pavement so pedestrians should make sure they are sticking to the sides of road IF they have to walk the road or use a safer route.
    Why shoud people have to drive at 20mph just in case ben fogle decides to walk down a narrow country road as if its not a road.
    The road is not a pavement so stop calling it a pavement. Its a country road so cars have priority. You choose to live in the counrtysode so should be aware that it may nkt be practical to walk everywjere due to lack of pavements

    Fed up of people who walk down roads like this with no awareness of traffic. I tried to pass a cyclist on a single track road for over 2 miles because he was oblivious to me being there, peddling away with his music in his ears. People need to learn the roads have cars on them and that they are "higher on the food chain" so to speak. If we didn't have cars, we wouldn't have roads. So stop complaining and be more self aware instead of self righteous.
