how can it be stolen when they voluntarily paid into the pension scheme? its up to the individual to keep track of their pensions

This happened to me, but the pension company contacted me directly. During my first job, i paid into a pension for 5 years. When i moved job i totally forgot to move it across to my current pension and i received a letter 5 years after i left that job and was told it was now going to be tranfered too a holding account. Found out i had thousands in it that I'd totally forget about, and i claimed a refund cause, like i said, it was worth thousands.
