  • Back to school time! We took Kyle school supply shopping for his first day of the new school year, which starts mid-July. Kyle attends a year-round school for children with special needs, so his summer break is over and it’s time to get back to our school time routines.
Kyle was born in 2006 and has SYNGAP1, a rare genetic disorder that causes epilepsy, global developmental delays, intellectual disability, autism, etc. I share more about his diagnosis in this video: • What is SYNGAP1 | Rare...

I love how you set him up for success by acknowledging his cues and leaving before he got too upset or angry. He expressed wanting to leave and so you headed to the check-out so it could be a successful shopping trip and leave him feeling like his voice was heard! Even though you didn't get everything you needed, he was able to participate in a family activity and feel accomplished and listened to. Semi-successful can be great too!

I like how you put that..."semi-successful can be great too" You're exactly right! ☺️

Can you do a video explaining more about kyle’s schooling?

Yes! I was planning on doing one eventually. Also, I'm doing a Q&A video soon and someone asked me to talk about it. That will come out in February.

That's awesome that he's doing school last year. What grade is Kyle in?

He's in 9th grade, technically, but can attend his school for children with special needs until he's 22.

Even though shopping with a child with special needs can be extremely challenging and exhausting it’s so important that we still make that effort to take them! My Autistic son loves shopping but has some issues with the activity that make it stressful for me. But by making the effort to take him and teach him what’s expected he is improving! Just a small question - Is there a particular reason that you don’t bring his communication device with you?

Bringing his device to places other than school is something we definitely would like to work towards. I knew for that particular trip, it was going to be challenging enough for me to keep him engaged and content to be in the store, so juggling a device where he can only make simple demands wouldn't be appropriate. At the time of this particular video, he used the device primarily to request things like eating and what shows he wanted to watch. He also perseverates on certain sounds on the talker and then it becomes a hindrance. We'll get there one day, though! ☺️
