I had a chance to see these guys live right before COVID at the Stockton arena and then COVID hit and dusty hill passed away. I was sad and lost for words 😢.
He plays to a click and ZZ use a pre-recorded backing track. Fooled everyone for decades. I heard them 'soundcheck' for half a day when they played an open air festival near where I was living. Billy was just jamming on top of the backing track. He sang 'live' too. Lots of fakery going on.
I heard after the credits went up and the show went off the air as it was live they stayed and did a full set for the audience way over what they were booked for...tv history and credited as being one of there best live tv appearances.
The vocal track is definitely the original recording. Billy has never sang this live, apart from on Johnny Carson show or something... that's on here and definitely worth a listen just to hear his real voice on the track. I'm a huge fan, but I'm annoyed that this song, Pincushion, Legs, Rough Boy...and many more... are always a prerecorded vocal (not necessarily the original recording) on their tours.... it's only the 80's onwards tunes that Billy sings. But it's frustrating. They even put out a 'Live' LP recently with these same NOT LIVE vocals on. A damn shame, because Billy's voice is even more awesome with age, and he has an amazing pitch range.... you can hear it when he does his "ow" to the audience. And even if he thinks it sounds bad, I'd rather hear a bad live voice than a lip-synched record any day!
@@sarge9733 Agree ! he should have been able to sing it live .. especially at his age here in 83 . Billy comes up with great stuff !! theirs no question about that . But live sadly he's not the real deal ! pre-recorded vocals , and always skips using the slide on the solo . The only reason on why is he must not think he can replicate them live .
Also notice how the main vocals actually ARE near the mic. And you don’t need to be that close to the mic to get a sound. I think you’re watching the wrong guy
Tom Wilcox hahahah I don't think so. They've been a trio for so long, they probably share the income equally. However since Gibbons gets the most attention he might get more profit from commercials etc.
Sounds different enough than the studio track. The bass is more distorted, the vocals are quieter in the mix, and Gibbons alternates between the rhythm guitar and lead, unlike the overdubs on the studio track. Perhaps they recorded "live" prior to the broadcast? From what I have read, this approach wasn't unusual for the times.
Heaviest Billy’s guitar has ever sounded totally amazing 😉
It's those DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups he was using in those Deans back then.
Every time I listen to this song my invisible beard grows one inch longer
Trent Mention Each time I listen to this song in born again in Amarillo, TX.
Man, that is some dirty Texas blues right there, son.
Loving it from germany
Attaboy!
1983 . . I was 16 and loved zz top . . . Being a teenager back then was one of the best blessings God ever gave me .
What I wouldn’t give to have lived during my parents time, life before internet, social media and cell phones
@@123456789jamiec i just wish i could see zz top and motley crue live at their peaks
Praise satan I wasn’t born during those times
Man, that guitar tone is so good!!
The best live version of this song. The guitar, bass, singing and the drums all
Immense
Billy's vocal is a tape on this song. Odd, as he did indeed sing the other songs at this event.
The kids will never know how hard that look and sound HIT in 1983.
Still hits like a Mack truck.
This song literally still sounds like you’re standing 3 feet away from a passing freight train
RIP DUSTY WE WILL MISS YOU

Ol' Frank Beard, the metronome man! Such a consistent player.
He is relentless!!

@@burlatsdemontaigne6147 He might be playing to a click but I don’t hear any tracks here.
Love this guys. RIP Dusty Hill
Drummer fills in to perfection 🥁
This blues guitar sound and tone is heavier than any Heavy Metal band ever. Billy fucking nails it.
After 36 years, I STILL loving watching this song! Jan. 2018
Now this is music
Hot damn a video on RUclips with 0 dislikes. As it should be!
Some asshole ruined it.
There's one in every crowd.
3 dislikes now... Is there a way to revoke someone's right to dislike? If so, those three bastards deserve it! Haha
Now we can’t even see the dislikes.
Looks like they're covered in dirt, but it's actually 100% pure Columbian party dust. The 80's were great
amazing video for 1983 wow thanks for sharing
RIP Dusty Hill. 🕊️🙏🎸
Good bye Duster, you'll be missed!
ZZ Top so good it sounds dubbed and they are just acting. But this is as real as a heart attack.
gtfo, heart attacks are a lie.
@@ThisHandleFeatureIsStupid word
The vocals are dubbed but the rest is live

Once I watched the Nickelbad version, I had to find this video to clean my ears
These guys are legendary - insane performance!
If you learn your trade then you get to be this Badass.
Those people are having so much fun. That’s what’s it’s like I guess.

Amazing band! That Jimmy Reed approach!

Sounds to me like they are using a vocal track. The music though is DEFINITELY live.
The vocal track is definitely the original recording.

Next week The Fall...love ZZ Top and The Fall...do what ? Seen both bands live....
It is dubbed, sound doesn’t change when he moves away from the microphone and the lips aren’t always in synch.
Loser alert

Wham! did it in 1983
Billy is clearly not signing live .. on this song . He's lipping to the studio vocal track .
