Great tutorial and great channel!! Trying this tutorial however (usind DVR 16.2) I have a rather strange problem (and I crosschecked a gazillion times that I follow your instructions a good as I can). Creating the eye (and the reflection) works great, the tracking itself is ok also (my tracking polygon follows the eye perfectly) but when I insert the planar transform the effect is that the black eye (and the highlight) wont move but stay right in their initial position but are cut off at the right and left edge by an invisible vertical line (kind of hard to explain in words... eg when the head moves to the left, the black eye stays still but the right side of the black eye seems to vanish behind the nose. If i put just the planar transform on the monitor (with the two-littlee-dots-on-the-left-underside-of -the-node thing...), it shows a black eye sitting still but beeing cut off on the sides according to the head movement...Same behaviour in other clips and whe using other masking tools (poligon, ellipse etc). I´m totally at a loss and any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks a ton in advance!
So this answer kind of sounds dumb, but this actually happened to me while I was practicing for this video and I found that if you blur the edge of your masks a little bit more generally this bug stops happening. Like I said seems like kind of a dumb/easy fix but please let me know if you try it and if it works, I hope it does but if it doesn't I'll try my best to help you through it!
@@GerritHarding Thank you so much for your reply. Softening didn´t solve the issue, unfortunately. What seems to help sometimes (but not always...) is to recreate the planar transform node several times (I guess why softening worked in your case is that probably changing a parameter causes the system to rerender the clip - like when you excange the transform node - but my system seems to be more stubborn that yours...). Funny that there seems to be nothing on the forum (or the rest of the internet) on that...I will post the problem on the BM forum and if someone there comes up with a solution I´ll post a link to it here just in case. @@GerritHarding Been testing some more and posted the issue on the BM forum. Whether it works or not depends on the size of the mask. If the size of the mask drops below a certain (or rather uncertain) threshold, the bug will appear. A very clever guy (xunite) on the BM forum has found out a workaround: Put a merge node between your background node and the planar transform node. A lot of the time that is caused by 4k being more difficult to render, you can kind of 'nudge' it into rendering it by adjusting the soft edge setting on your mask.... If that is the problem the delivered 4k project should look correct even if inside Davinci it looks like it isn't doing anything
@@GerritHarding Hi gerrit, thanks for your answer. You're right, just added soft edge and now it works. Anyway it is still difficult to make adjustments on the mask, because the mas doesn"t fit with result in the render. FYI, I've just tried with mocha tracker and it seems much better

Thanks Gerrit Harding for this great tutorial! I'm quite a noob, only got Davinci a few days ago. I'm struggling quite a lot cause somehow i can't manage to sort the second eye out (i so much regret doing this project of mine using the beta version 18 as it seems superbuggy -.-). The first one just got fine by following your tutorial. Then i repeated the same process tracking the other eye, but when i try to connect the new planar transform to the merge node, both the planar transform node and the MediaOut1 node turn red, which i understood it means it's not working, since the playback also is frozen showing only the first frame. The dumb thing is that i followed this tutorial already few hours ago for the first time and everything went smooth without any issues, but somehow i lost the progress of my project and had to redo this part, so here i am stuck now. Sorry for the long post, hope you can help me *.*
As silly as it sounds i think it was just a bug as i verified that i just needed to close and reopen the software. I made a few tests all with the same result. Now that i know beta version is so bugged i'll think about twice before using it for the next project ;P
Is there any difference in which color line connects things in Fusion? I'm stuck trying to connect the 2nd ("time saving") PlanarTransform to the merge XP.
Thank you for this tutorial. Just a quick question. I did the first eye OK. I then did the second eye, but when I ran the clip, literally just one frame didn't show the effect. The others were fine. I tried to work out why this one frame of the eye wasn't covered. I saved everything, then re-booted Resolve in case it was a bug. However, now there are no effects on the second eye at all. The nodes are all linked and appear to be correct (I cross-referenced the original eye), but I can't get the effect to work. When I click on the nodes, the spline is there around the eye and the background is the correct colour, but the effect still isn't showing on this second eye. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
That's normally just a rendering bug, when that has happened to me all I've had to do to fix it (which is weird) is adjust the "soft edge" parameter on the spline mask... That I think causes it to rerender and it normally shows up correctly after 👍 if that doesn't work try delivering the project to see if the issues show up in the final copy... If that doesn't work let me know and we'll try more to figure it out 👍
This tutorial is great, it’s just my computer is too old and refuses to load the effect. After I connected the Planar Transform, it’s been losing for hours lol
That’s a pretty common rendering issue, if you wiggle the soft edge of your mask a little bit sometimes that gets it to think about it again… if that doesn’t do it it’s just a waiting game 👍 not fun to wait through but this is a tough effect for computers to deal with
Try softening the edges of the eye a little bit, sometimes the rendering gets stuck... Does your mask show up over the eye even though the black part doesn't?
Yeah that's a rendering thing that happens sometimes, try softening the edge of your mask just a little bit, that normally like 'jolts' the system into rerendering it and showing it where it goes
That’s a bummer, this is a tough one to render which makes it a bit harder to move around… ends up being easy to overcorrect. I’m sorry it’s giving you so much trouble!

@@GerritHarding so do it all again and when you say export , where to , wont it still be the same ? and i take it you have to do it all again for the other eye ?
No I mean you might not be able to see it in your work window but it probably is actually working, you can check by exporting it because it’ll most likely show up in the exported file
@@GerritHarding so do it again and when you say export , how do you mean render it and export it , how will that help ? also i take it you have to do the same process for the other eye.

Weird. The mask of the eye isn't tracking for me. Just staying in the same place.
No matter how mny times i redo it - i cant get the white in the eye to show
Is the whole mask there?
@@GerritHarding Yes - Ive even tried to redone it 4 times, to make sure im doing everything right
- thanks for answer btw
@@GerritHarding Its like its behind the black.
So you can see the whole mask as black?
Gerrit Harding I restartet the program, and it works now - but thanks!
Can someone please explain to me why every time I open Davinci Resolve that my PC crashes because of the app? I have Davinci Resolve 17 because I had to update as that was one of the troubleshooting issues. During THIS particular thing my PC crashed. Not even the rendering part. Just moving my mouse around. I don't understand why this constantly happens. Any help would be much appreciated.

check if your driver is studio version, not gaming edition. fixed it for me
Copied it to a T and it didnt work at all for me for some reason!
o meu ficou uma bosat kkk
You didn't mention how to automate it and time control it. So now it's in the whole video.
You just cut the clip length you need, I think the video covered that
done this several times , my demon eye is way off , nearly next to my eye
That’s weird, honestly it’s probably just a rendering issue, this effect is really tough on computers… if you want to check, build the whole thing and then export it… the delivered product should have the effect on it… I know that sucks but like I said it’s a tough one
@@GerritHarding was the same when exported.
My eye doesn't move, no matter what I've tried.
Is that what it's called? I always find that so attractive. Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit used to have those (but as lenses) and I always thought it was sssssoooo hot. 😅😈
Wes Borland was the shit. I thought his eyes were cool as fuck when I was a kid. He did it all for Da Nookie I guess.
You're going too fast with moments. Great video tho. But I have to pauze it a lot and rewind a loot of times cause it's not working for me.
Jeepers creepers
Spooky stuff
