  • Alan Watts- The Unspeakable World
    I was so in love with this amazing Alan Watts speech that I found myself wanting to take part, to be "a partner..." to this way of thinking. This is the music I felt when I heard this wonderful thing. Thank you, Alan Watts.
    Music By Adi Goldstein - "Not Too Long Ago"
    Big Thanks to Mark Watts for letting me use this amazing recording!
    Spoken Text:
    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    But you know, if you talk all the time, you will never hear what anybody else has to say, and therefore, all you'll have to talk about is your own conversation. The same is true for people who think all the time. That means, when I use the word 'think,' talking to yourself, subvocal conversation, the constant chit-chat of symbols and images and talk and words inside your skull. Now, if you do that all the time, you'll find that you've nothing to think about except thinking, and just as you have to stop talking to hear what I have to say, you have to stop thinking to find out what life is about. And the moment you stop thinking, you come into immediate contact with what Korzybski called, so delightfully, 'the unspeakable world,
    The most ordinary sights and sounds and smells, the texture of shadows on the floor in front of you. All these things, without being named, and saying 'that's a shadow, that's red, that's brown, that's somebody's foot.' When you don't name things anymore, you start seeing them. Because say when a person says 'I see a leaf,' immediately, one thinks of a spearhead-shaped thing outlined in black and filled in with flat green. No leaf looks like that. No leaves--leaves are not green. That's why Lao-Tzu said 'the five colors make a man blind, the five tones make a man deaf,' because if you can only see five colors, you're blind, and if you can only hear five tones in music, you're deaf. You see, if you force sound into five tones, you force color into five colors, you're blind and deaf. The world of color is infinite, as is the world of sound. And it is only by stopping fixing conceptions on the world of color and the world of sound that you really begin to hear it and see it.
    I am not talking about the ordering of ordinary everyday life in a reasonable and methodical way as being schoolteacherish, and saying 'if you were NICE people, that's what you would do.' For heaven's sake, don't be nice people. But the thing is, that unless you do have that basic framework of a certain kind of order, and a certain kind of discipline, the force of liberation will blow the world to pieces. It's too strong a current for the wire

      Perhaps too intelligent for most people. But for him I think he was really enjoying it.
      I personally would say it's more awareness. Really looking at things and going all the way.
      Also intelligent nowadays is very boring. Too serious.
      But I agree that it is very special to have his perspective and being able to share it so well. Even today.

    I had a friend who was obsessed with thinking. He said there was no such thing as overthinking. He categorized the world into caste groups of "thinkers" and "feelers", one being superior to the other. I haven't talked to him in ten years. I wonder how he's doing now.

    I don’t get the last part. He says without a certain order the world will blow itself to pieces. But before he says there is no actual order, as there are no 5 colors. Is order good or bad now?

    • @dertodeshorst6294
      @dertodeshorst6294 11 месяцев назад +1

      His Argument is:
      First the human needs Order, he has to sort into easy categories blend out many impressions and form habitual patterns to be functional.
      Therefore he looses touch with reality and freedom, slowly but surely getting enslaved by the System, that helped him to survive in the first place. Now you can understand why he says "I don't want to be school teachersch".
      He invites you to experience the world and freedom as it is, while simultaneously knows that you cannot follow it pathologically.

    when do you know it’s time to give up? when you your friends believe in you more then your parents? when everything is fine then the world goes back to exactly how it was when you were miserable? when you have so much anger built up and you let it all out and then the people who gave birth to you calls the cops on you for the 3rd time and they don’t want you in the house anymore because i am now an 18 year old. when is it time?

    I have not been able to grasp the meaning behind leaves are not green… can someone explain? If they can please

    • @DeSantangilo
      @DeSantangilo 2 года назад +4

      Leaves are technically green, but leaves are also beautiful to look at. And it's difficult to define beauty, so there's no point in spending our effort trying to come up with a universal definition. When we stop analyzing what we're looking at, we gain the ability to step back and see the beauty of everyday life/nature around us. Happened to me for the first time when I saw the Na Pali Coast. The sum of everything I was looking at was just so overwhelmingly beautiful for me that my heart was beating fast the whole time. Changed my perception of nature forever.

    • @sfuture08
      @sfuture08 Год назад +1

      Leaves are not technically green, they reflect green. They absorb other colors on light spectrum. But, I think it’s meant to imply that what we are able to identify only with our eyes is ultimately an illusion. We have names for things to categorize and then dismiss, but to release that is liberation. Seeing is far beyond just sight. Something something Plato’s “forms” something something…
