Great in-depth breakdown! Thanks for posting. I played from '98-'02. Just got back into it recently. So many new abilities, card types, etc. It's been a learning experience, but this old dog is slowly picking up the new tricks.
Really helpful, really clearly articulated, and solved my problems . Also your answers to questions in the comments: excellent. Wish I’d seen your vid first! Many thanks.
I still have so many questions. Do you tap the card when you use the ability? Do I put a physical item down to show how much loyalty it has? Do i remove the loyalty counters for direct damage, and does that heal at the end of the round if they are removed due to damage and not from me paying for an ability? Do I use the abilities in my main phase?
You do not have to tap the planeswalker to use the abilities. You may activate a planeswalker ability any time you may play a sorcery and only once per turn. When you do add or subtract that many loyalty counters it says to on the left and do what it says on the card. For example, if you use Liliana's first ability she would change from 3 loyalty counters to 4. Your opponent may attack your planeswalker and you can block as normal. When a planeswalker takes damage, remove that many loyalty counters from it. When a planeswalker has no loyalty counters left on it put it into your graveyard.
Hope this helps!
Yeah this video doesn't tell me how to use a planeswalker at all.
@@nathansilver3956 This was a more concise explanation of the information I sought then the 9 minute video. Thank you.
@@nathansilver3956 so how do you remove loyalty counters into the negative?
Great video. Just a couple more questions: 1. When do you place loyalty counters on a planeswalker? During every main phase? Does adding loyalty counters happen only once per turn?
2. Are there physical things you place on top of the planeswalker that count as loyalty counters? Thank you
Your video answered a question I was having about playing both a Liliana, Death's Majesty and a Liliana, Untouched by Death one after the other. Thank you.
My pleasure! :)
Thank you for this very helpful video, i am new to MTG and planeswalkers where a bit of a mystery, now, i can really play with them.
Planeswalkers are so OP...Love it!
Is your opponent about to attack a planswalker directly or how do they take damage and can they block or attack
Opponents decide if they want to attack you or the planeswalker, and you use creatures you control to block the attack
@@kage1456 can you lighting bolt planeswalker?
@@Torch_of_Sin yes
There accentially like another player you control that's not as strong as you are out the gate
This is a much better explanation video. Thank you.
grew up in the 80s...i'm loving the playing mat. customized product??
Haha, thanks! It's an image I threw together in photoshop and then got it printed on a blank playmat
Awesome video! I just had a question about blocking and attacking if they can do that and how that works
Can they attack? Needed more basic info.
Having all 13 Liliana planeswalkers and her support cards in a deck makes for a unique experience in mtg
thanks needed the info
Can you use the ability the turn it comes into play, or do you have to wait until next turn? Can planeswalkers be targeted with boomerang spells, can they be used if tapped.
I have a question about planeswalkers. Liliana, at the beginning of this video, does the number at the bottom right corner mean that she has 3 loyalty points that she can use right away? (Does she begin with summoning sickness?) Does those 3 loyalty points mean that she can use her -2 ability right away without using the +1 ability 2 times first? And she's left with 1 loyalty point afterwards?
Does it mean that she starts with 3 loyalty points and then if I use her +1 ability does she have 4 loyalty points then? 4 loyalty points = I can use 2 -2 abilities? And after that she "dies"?
I have basically used my planeswalkers like this: The bottom right number is her toughness and she starts with no ability/loyalty points. That makes no sense since there are cards like Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner that has no +1 ability. Have I used planeswalker the wrong way?
Basically I have separated her loyalty points into two groups. Toughness at the bottom and then "ability points". I guess that's wrong? Her loyalty points are her toughness AND ability points?
So if I raise her loyalty points with her +1 ability, does that mean that she gains more toughness and can survive attacks better?
from what I got out of the video, I believe the answer to your last two questions would be yes?
A family memeber of mine who plays mtg told me to think of a plainswalker like it is another player. But there doesn't seem to be enough info on the card for that to make sense
Thanks
How do you use the + abilities? I understand the - abilities, but for + do you just add a loyalty counter? Seems OP if that's the case..
I got to get one of those playmats where can I get one.
do the loyalty start right when its down or does it wait a turn and if the card has loyalty of 3 and you use say a plus-1 for 3 life, does the loyalty jump to 4 for that turn.
1. Can i use a different ability of one planeswalker card on same turn?
2. Can i use a same ability of one planeswalker card on same turn?
only 1 per turn. only exception is if u cast the planeswalker again (another one from hand for example)
Amazing Video!!1👍👍
Thanks bud!
So, Can I counter her coming out? Can I lightning bolt her to get rid of her directly, and can I split attack declaration, and have certain attackers to hit her instead of you.
How many Planeswalkers am I allowed to put in my deck and onto the battlefield?
Thanks fr
Can you use abilities like the +1 or - 2 or more if I have the loyalty counters needed as soon as you summon it? Also can I have different planeswalkers on the field at the same time? (For example Jace Ingenious Mind-Mage is on the field and I want to play Nissa Genesis). I'm new at this and I just want to make sure I know as much as possible. I know this video is old.
Those are great questions. Yes you can use a planeswalker’s ability when they enter the battlefield. If you want to use the - ability, then you need to make sure you at least have the proper number of loyalty counters needed to pay the cost of that loyalty ability.
You can have as many different planeswalkers out on the battlefield as you want!
Okay. Thank you very much
What's the best way to protect your planeswalker commander?
Nice
Do they tank the dmg to ur hp?
what is the background music please
So ever turn it can gain a +1 loyalty counter if it has a +1 ability. Am new to this and I got the new M19 plans walker
That's correct. If your planewalker has a +1 ability then you can do that ability every turn (your turn).
We Are Gamers okay thank you.
I still don’t understand how to use loyalty points. I need to see an example of them in play. That’s what I’m looking for.
so basically i can use my planeswalker ability once per turn at sorcery speed spell with no strings attatched right? meaning i dont need to play anything else in order to use the planeswalker ability. i hope i got this right.
How do you gain loyalty points? By casting the +x every turn?
Can a Planeswalker be destroyed by an "Exile" card or "destroy creature" card? And also can a Planeswalker's spells be countered? Like let's pretend a plansewalker has a spell that can put a -3/-3 debuff on a target creature and the planeswalker casts it on a creature, can it be countered. Hopefully that makes sense.
So if a planeswalker has a loyalty of 3 does that mean it as a 3/3 health and defense for when it gets attacked? Then it decreases your loyalty when you get attacked?
Thanks!!!!
how do you get a planeswalkers' emblem tho?
so its a pacified creature...
Can you use EACH of the 3 abilities once per turn? Or just ONE every turn
one every turn
It's not even a "creature" at all. Cards that say "target creature" may not be used on planeswalkers. They must say "Any target", or an older card that directs damage to "target player" can also be used on a planeswalker, per the errata and rules changes.
planeswalkers are used in standard right? im kind of a returning player but i havent played that much mtg so im kinda new to the formats and such
how many planeswalkers can I have on the field at one time like could someone just make a deck of planeswallkers and have 5 on the battlefield? Also if a creature has trample and attacks a planeswalker then the damage doesnt go to my life?
Can I have more than one in a 100 card commander deck
I’m sorry but I’m still confused. I know that if you only have let’s say, three loyalty counters and you want to use an ability that’s -7, obviously you don’t have enough but how do you AQUIRE more Loyalty counters so that you have enough to use that ability? Do your counters go up at a set rate? Or is it something else?
Right so on most planeswalkers, there is a + ability. Using that would increase the amount of loyalty points the planeswalker has. You can use abilities like that when you cast a sorcery. Any questions?
Can they be attack by creatures?
Yes, they can. You can use your creatures to block (if they can be legally blocked) attacks from those creatures.
@@WeAreGamersYTube So say a creature had a power of 4 and it successfully attacked my planeswalker when it had 3 loyalty points left, my planeswalker would die? (So pretty much are loyalty points used as toughness?)
@@maybematthewmorris exactly, if you don't assign a blocker then your PW would love loyalty counters based on how much damage they would take. Once they have 0 loyalty counters, they go to the graveyard.
How do you determine their power/toughness?
Planeswalkers don't have power and toughness (the reason is because they are not creatures). With the exception of Gideon PW cards that will state that he becomes a creature for a turn with a predetermined power/toughness.
@@WeAreGamersYTube They do have "toughness" tho, cus you can bolt one for 3, correct? And it loses 3 "toughness"? If at 0, dies...
Well i look up it only say i cant have two of same planewalker so cant i make a deck woth 4 diff legendary planewalker and play them play them
So is ther best way to keep track of its Loyalty a d20?
Nothing to do with plane walk and chaos dies?
guys make this easy on me....when someone attacks you can they specifically attack your planeswalker....and if so how does that work persay....does the loyalty counter matter when you are being attackd.....someone hook me up with an easy answer here
Was wondering the same.
Yes please!
Right, so anything that can damage a creature can damage a planeswalker. The loyalty counter would act as health in that case. A planeswalker can be attacked directly. Any questions?
Still confused, how is loyalty increased? Do you just add a count each turn using the + ability? So I would keep using the + ability until I had enough loyalty to cast the - or ultimate ability? If my question makes sense.
Taser X hey, at 1:39. If you do an ability that has +1 you put one on. If you do one that has -2, you take off two. Etc...
We Are Gamers thank you, for some reason my brain was not grasping that but its. Clear now, thanks!
What does it mean when a card effect says deal X points of damage to target player or planeswalker?
It depends on the context. When it says on the card: "pay X mana to inflict X damage" then you can decide how much mana you wanna spent and inflinct the same amount as damage for example u pay 5 mana the card does 5 damage, you pay 8 mana it does 8 dmg. Read the rest of the card and it should be clear what X stands for.
I'm confused. I was told taht you can only attack a planeswalker if the card specifically states that it can hit creature or planeswalker. If it doesn't say that, then the planeswalker is safe and you can't do anyhting against, but now I'm finding out that any creature or spell can target a planeswalker. Is there any definitive answer to this?
You can attack a planeswalker. During your declare attackers phase, you state whether you want to attack the player, or the planeswalker. A defending player can choose creatures to block attackers aimed at the planeswalker.
Can i use the same ability over and over
Once per turn, you can use an ability that you have already used in the game as long as you are able to add or remove the appropriate amount of loyalty counters.
How do you add loyalty counters
The one that say plus number if use that a effect you get more life for your planewalker
What’s up with the guy from ghostbusters on ur mat, lol
can they be targeted by fireball or direct damage?
Yes as long as it can target a player
How do you gain loyalty
The most common way of gaining loyalty is by activating abilities that have a "+" icon. You put the number of counters equal to the number on the planeswalker.
I kinda wish you didn't have random shity background music.
In my experience, whoever gets a planeswalker on the battlefield first (and they aren't a terrible player), wins. These cards are just so unreasonably powerful that it's almost unfair. Especially if you play against someone who has no planeswalker in their deck. Once that bad boy is on the field, game over.
When I first started playing in 2002, you're lucky if you win in your first 20 games (against an experienced player). The other day, I watched a brand new player who had never played before beat an experienced veteran because she just happened to get her planeswalker out on her 4th turn, while the veteran never got his planeswalker. Three turns later she was able to wipe out all her opponent's creatures, destroy all his artifacts, and do 10 damage to him (killing him). Call it beginner's luck, but that bullshit would never have happened before planeswalkers came about...
Just like everything else, we have to make everything easy for the younger generations. God forbid they ever lose something in their lives or have to spend real time gaining experience at something before winning.... I mean, just look at the comment section! These kids can't even comprehend the loyalty counters. How f'n hard is it, kids? You start with a number, you add or subtract depending on which ability you use, and once you hit zero, the card is done. Yet the comment sections are filled with, "Ugh, this is too much math. This is too hard. I don't get this! Why is it so complicated?"
Some people are older players who haven't seen these types of planeswalker cards. They used to have power and toughness like any other creature, but now they don't.
why does this music sound like year of the cat
i respect the effort but you are actually a little confusing. But got the jist, thanks
I'm sorry, watching your video doesn't really help explain basically what these planeswalkers cards are, and what can they do. Might wanna try to learn how to explain it in a more simple way next time :/
when u have a planeswalker u can use them to use one of their abilities per turn like sorcery. and the abilities can change the loyalty counter. if she has 3 and u do a +1 ability it has 4. if she has 3 and u do -1 ability she only has 2 and so on. when planeswalker reaches 0 it goes to graveyard
@@Gangsterr65 I see, thank you so much for the explanation
@@zaoplays no problem, glad i could help you. have a nice day bro
Ugh they are just too much math
Your a lot of math
Too much trigonometry and calculus involved....
