  • Watch my Roubo inspired workbench build from start to finish as a cinematic time-lapse. This includes everything from preparing the timber through to drilling dog holes and installing a woodworking bench vise. This workbench is built entirely from reclaimed timber to a Roubo inspired design. It features a large laminated benchtop, wedged mortise and tenon joints between the legs and benchtop, lap joints between the stretchers and legs, dog holes and an Irwin woodworkers vise. The bench is finished with a blend of pure Tung oil and citrus oil.

I’ve watched this so many times as I’m planning my own workbench. I just got some reclaimed heart pine to use for the top! It’s really old so the nails are pretty brittle. It’s tough to get through but I hope it will pay off and be almost as beautiful as yours! Thank you for this video!

Thanks for watching! There is a bit of work involved with a workbench like this but it's well worth it. Good luck with your workbench!

Good luck with your workbench. I also wrote a series of blog posts which have some further details - they are all linked in the video description. Thanks.

Looks awesome mate - saw the comment about the kauri from the old harvey norman - nice!

Thanks! Yeah, pretty cool story behind the reclaimed kauri. I still have a small amount set aside waiting for a worthy project.

… 💭 dream bench mmmm … beautiful end result. Also how much fun making it 🚀🙏🏼💪🏼. I build mine with 5cm thick MDF 😅.. salvaged wood beams from a demolition. Any ways. One day I’ll build me a real beauty.

Sure was fun making it! Salvaged wood is a great choice for a workbench, since it will get beaten up anyway. Thanks

This is a real showpiece! We’ll done!
Yes that’s very special timber and I appreciate the story behind it.
What did you use for the finish?

Thanks, glad you like it! I as too scared to use it as a workbench at first, even the smallest scratch would bother me - haha. It's finished with pure Tung oil and citrus thinner. I think it was about 5 coats all up.

Thanks! The whole build was over about 6 weeks working on it in my spare time.

It's Kauri for the top and Rimu for the base (reclaimed in both cases). There's a good story about the Kauri actually, it originally came from the old Harvey Norman building in Christchurch while undergoing earthquake repairs. Pretty cool to have a piece of Christchurch history in my workbench! Thanks for commenting.
