for many reasons I don't think luffy still having the gum gum fruit would make sense as for the take itself I'm going to have to hard disagree. The reason oda made luffys fruit the nika fruit was to show that all along the base version of the fruit was still useless to most. 99.999% of the verse could never awaken it yet luffy did. That is what makes changing the name work as it means luffy was one of the only people who could make this seemingly bad fruit not only good, but that he was also one of the few who could actually awaken the thing. I don't think it being the nika fruit cheapens anything when nika fruit or not, most just can't awaken it and would assume the fruit is trash. As for the other side the message I see about others prayers not being answered and kumas taking so long to be answered is just strengthening the themes of Nika even more as it shows that Imu is causing all of this world wide oppression. Yet thematically the people like Kuma and other slaves wishing for a miracle for so long eventually led to someone like Luffy who could be their saviour. It doesn't matter if he had the fruit the entire time as Luffy always had the personality to become their liberator he just needed to master the hardest fruit to awaken in the world. Essentially its not about the prayers not being answered immediately its that someday be it decades or centuries later no matter how long imu tries to delay it someone will rise up
For me, it's as simple as Luffy made the gum gum fruit special period. Nothing more is needed, no zoans, no mythical histories, nothing. Gear 5 is simply the ultimate form of expressing that freedom and proving that imagination and sheer will can surpass anything (even death lmao). I think its the idea of Nika and the desire of freedom that the WG should actually fear, not this exact fruit that has been reawakened for the first time in centuries. Imo, the entire message of Nika is that every single devil fruit (be it the gum gum fruit or the paw paw fruit) and any person (be it Luffy, Bonney or Kuma) CAN be truly free and become that prophesized liberator - just like Kuma already was the hands of liberation for all of his people. Renaming the gum gum to zoan: nika functionally doesn't really change anything, but it's just a *vibe* for me. Luffy IS still the true embodiment of Nika, but *everyone* can be that, regardless of where they were born, what fruit they have, what ancestry they have etc etc. Hope that makes sense 😄
