I have not been so hyped to see one of his movies until now. I've also seen the Indiana Jones series, The Color Purple, Hook, ET, Jaws, Jurassic Park 1/2 and War of the Worlds.
This could have felt so fluffy, dated and corny- but man they knocked it out of the park. Every musical number, every dance move, every set and costume, every shot- it all took my breath away. This is classical Hollywood filmmaking magic like only a master could pull off
My favourite director of all times, directing my favourite musical of all time, directing the best movie of the year! Even think it's one of Spielberg's best movies ever! It was a triumph in every sense..
I agree with you. But I understand why it didn’t. One reason is that another cinematic take on a genuinely beloved classic is bound to be perceived as redundant or a hard sell, no matter how beautifully it is made or who the director is.
I love the energy put into both sequences. I finally was able to watch the movie on Sunday on Disney Plus. This new telling had few elements that were enough to justify it's existence after 6 decades since WSS was first brought to the screen. The new dance vocabulary will take adjusting since I'm more used to seeing the original work done by Jerome Robbins. If there is one of the 7 nominations this movie should win for, it's Ariana DeBose as Anita. West Side Story is even more powerful than ever and slightly gritty.
@@RaymondHng I wish seen it in theaters. But other then certain movies I made a commitment to see in December, the variant didn’t put me in the mood for a tearjerker.
An absolute masterpiece, a work of art. The entire ensemble was perfectly cast, and the Latin representation, yess! From the cinematography, directing, design, culture, music, sound, and choreography; so much synchronicity.
The first time I saw the 2021 dance at the gym, I had a huge smile on my face. Everything about it was perfect. No hate to the 1961 production, but the 2021 dance scene blew the 1961 dance scene out of the water
Hope it wins Best Picture. West Side Story is Spielberg's most vibrant, joyous, colorful, entertaining, brilliant and violent movie in years. It looks like a musical from the 50's and a Disney musical. I prefer the 1961 original but absolutely loved this reimagination. The last Spielberg movie to win Best Picture was Schindler's List almost 30 years ago. Is about time to add to the list of Best Picture winners another movie from one of our most celebrated and prolific directors. Also, the last musical to win in the category was Chicago 20 years ago. I mean, The Power of the Dog was amazing but we had Moonlight winning recently with the same message. And Westerns, so many of them already won Best Picture. Especially today in this generation in a time when musicals are not getting any respect from directors, a movie like this is a gift and truly a school class to every filmmaker on how to do a really good musical. Also, let's face it: West Side Story legacy is huge, an American classic and in my opinion a world classic. It speaks so much to everyone anywhere. Loved the spanish dialogues in this version. I'm ok with Jane Campion winning Best Achievement in Directing but West Side is an instant classic. Hope Academy voters get it right and award the true best motion picture of 2021
The film that wins the Academy Award for Best Picture is closely correlated with at least a Best Film Editing nomination. For 33 consecutive years, 1981 to 2013, every Best Picture winner had also been nominated for the Film Editing Oscar, and about two thirds of the Best Picture winners have also won for Film Editing. Film editing is unique to cinema, separating filmmaking from other art forms that preceded it. Unfortunately, _West Side Story_ did not receive a Best Editing nomination.
@@RaymondHng it's not just that, it didn't recieved a screenplay nomination. Titanic was the last movie that won Best Picture without a screenplay nomination and that was how many years ago?? While I'm not aware about the whole Best Editing thing, I think it's more of a tradition that after Titanic, a movie can win Best Picture if it gets a screenplay nomination
If you were to tell me that they’re making a remake to one of the best musicals of all time, after 60 years. And that it was great I would’ve eaten my hat
I should’ve known Paul Tazewell did costume design on this, I should’ve freaking known. Every work I’ve seen where he designs tells such a story through clothing and it’s so unique to him but just SO GOOD.
I’ve watched it and while I think it is absolutely magnificent on a technical standpoint (set, costumes, filming choreography etc…) I couldn’t really get into the story but I’ve never really like the musical to much anyway. But I’m glad that it’s getting so much praise and people are enjoying it! 😄
There's just something amazing about seeing Steven Spielberg, recording on a tiny phone, while sitting on a wheelie chair as it is being pulled back to get a zoom out effect! haha.
I actually loved this version even more than the original 1961 classic. Spielberg really should direct some more musicals in his career, he knows how to stage the musical numbers to perfection!
As they say in the video, musical numbers are the same as action setpieces. And Spielberg was, and is, the master of staging action. It makes perfect sense he's great at staging musicals as well. I'm happy he finally found the will and courage to do it, the result was great.
There's quite a bit of promotional material released back in December that is accessible to industry people and lay people do not have access to. Just because you're seeing this for the time doesn't mean that Academy members are seeing it for the time as well.
Rita Moreno is correct. At this time, this story, its depiction of life with mankind's prejudices is paramount now. More so than yesterday's, it seems. 😔
It's the final film of the 9 Best Picture noms this year that I'm yet to see. Will rectify that soon. The original is a great film & I'm not a big fan of musicals either.
@@NoirFan84 Loved Drive my car, it was exceptional. Dune was a visual spectacle but as a film it left me completely cold, and I am a huge Villeneuve fan btw. Note: the fact he wasn’t nominated for Best Director is an absolute blasphemy!!
Doubt it, he have been wanting to make a West Side Story for his entire life. This is his passion project, also most Marshall and Hooper's movie requires heavy visual effects, this movie doesn't so obviously Spielberg's job is a lot easier compare to Marshall and Hooper

Cool. Perhaps Amy Schumer will break out one of her racist Mexican jokes during the broadcast. She's an edgy comedian, right? Racism jokes are fine if you are a "comedian"?
We’ve come to our senses and yes it is better in some elements. In some others it’s not. Both versions have pluses and minuses. None of them are perfect.
But when it comes to faithfulness of the source material, Spielberg's movie is certainly a lot faithful than the original. At least he cast Latino actors to play Latino characters unlike the original which had white people play Latino characters
no, it came out the week before no way home and also musicals are a harder sell than marvel superhero movies. if you watched the 1961 film it deals with themes that would be considered "woke" now.

I love Spielberg but I don't understand why this remake. If he wanted to modernized it, make it different, he should have move the plot to present time America. The songs are ageless, it'd have caught more viewers from this millennium. The changes he did while keeping the 50s setting were just details. The original is iconic in its context.
