Bruce calls him on stage sometimes as the world's greatest second guitar. The reality is Steve Van Zant can't be Nil's waterboy. But he has to make a living so . . .

the greatest unsung hero in the history of rock .he should have been inducted into the roc hall of fame ages ago and still he is most humble he is a gift to those who appriciate his miraculous talent .

Nils is great, and Bruce only wants great players in E Street Band. A union of greatness-including Little Steve and the Big Man (and now his son)? Other than that-with Carlos S Nils L is the greatest guitar man. No other players find that warm touch. It is like Lang Lang playing Liebeswünsch!
I dated a neighbor of Nils, when he lived in Maryland. Saw him perform with "Grin" many times and even played a little basketball with him. We all have things that remind us of our youth... the mere mention of Nils brings back so many memories of my mine. Oh by the way, he's a great basketball player too!
@@gailwilliams2678 I'm sure the gymnastics, martial arts and onstage flips while playing had nothing to do with the hip replacements... I used to live in what was essentially a trailer park. Except it was in Malibu, on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. In short, it was a paradise, Paradise Cove. I had a neighbor, a woman who was slightly older than me at the time. Everyone called her Sis. She was what you might call a faded beauty, in that you could see glimmers of her youth in the lines on her face, and in so doing, you knew she was gorgeous in that way that young women can sometimes be. Anyway, I was walking by her trailer one afternoon when I heard this song wafting out the windows and through the open door. She was sitting on the porch, with a thousand mile gaze in her eyes. When she noticed me, I said hi, not wanting to intrude on her privacy. She smiled in a way that let me know it was okay to address her. As the song filled the air, I asked who was singing it. When she told me it was Nils Lofgren, I was surprised. She said it was indeed him. And that he was her ex-husband. And he had written this song for her. I didn't know it was possible to drain the air when you were standing outside, but in that moment, that's exactly how i felt. Like the gravity of her words forced the air to another place, quite far away. She went on to explain how Nils had fallen in love with the president of his fan club, and left her. To sit alone on a porch in paradise, feeling like hell. Because all she had left was the tortured void of not being her man's Valentine, despite his lovely song to the contrary. Bless you for sharing, Sis...
the feeling with which Nils plays with is amazing!!! The emotions that he makes you feel with both the guitar and his voice. Not too mention if you ever get to meet him, he is a fantastic bloke and loves to have a chat with his fans, very approachable!!!! Thanks Nils for the great music

Saw Nils at least 2 times and loved each performance. He did flips on stage off a trampoline with his guitar. Saw him at the Roxy in LA 1980, Palomino Theatre in Encinitas, CA. 1976. Also, saw him play with Bruce Springteen in San Diego, 1990s.
Nils - among the very best ever... and I mean the top 10... Makes his Instrument talk and the language it uses is absolutely amazing! many great memories of Nils 'live' dating way back to the early 80's. Legend!
Casual viewers and non-musicians will not appreciate how much intuitive touch and skill goes into playing that way, the harmonics, volume control, melodicism, and feedback control.

I discovered Nils only four years ago -- and fell in love! Why didn't I know who he was? great guitarist, good singer, genuinely nice guy! As the youngest of a family of singers, I love that his brothers play and sing with him.
Get this- I was into Grin in 1974 , and saw them at some playhouse on the Georgetown Campus, 43 years ago while EAT A PEACH played 24/7 in my dorm.. Now I am going to say something controversial- which is, that Nils including his 50 plus career WAS AT HIS VERY BEST seen at the concert I include. Just saw him last week and sad that he didn't do this song. Still a great concert and fun to see him play with his brothers. Still sounds exactly the same as he did the first time I saw him 30 years ago.
One of my favourite songs and musician of adult life. I do try to see him on his modest tours of England. Always touched, sometimes to tears, by his unique sentiment in song.
Clearly, one of the greatest guitar players of our time. This piece is especially expressive and soulful. Try the version with Springsteen as the companion vocalist. Deep.
I can think of a few equally emotive guitarists as Nils....Hendrix, Duane, and Clapton come to mind among others, but can't think of any as plaintive and heart-wrenching as what Lofgren does with his strat on this song. Its like a second lead singer.
Glen Campbell, often a Sessions guitarist, NEVER LEARNED HOW TO READ MUSIC, so every song he ever played, WAS BY EAR, and he could let it rip , but RARELY, to our detriment. EVEN WITH ALzheimers, long after his speaking memory was gone, his guitar played on . No songwriter, otherwise he had the complete package/ - That Jaw, that thick hair, and after he lived through drug hell, a heck of a nice man. He was very clear, his best time on earth was hanging with the Beach boys and the wrecking crew.
He is the greatest master of playing harmonics in a subtle and lyrical manner. These sounds are are times transcendental and etherial and can induce an almost trance like state if you let your mind soar and reel while listening or playing along. Harmonic effects on the guitar mimic the subtle harmonics that the human voice produce and thus give an organic resonance to his music. ZZ top do some great one too but in a much heavier context and thus less subtle:)
Thanks LordBlackMass!!! I lost a few Grin albums through the years....like the one where he's hanging upside down in a tree! I loved that album.....the cover was great too. Now I know where I can maybe get a copy. I was a super-fan of Grin in the 70's.

Everyone was playing Dicky Betts ALLMON bROS, IN THE DORMS HE DROVE ME CRAZY- i WAS grin, sTEVIE- MUSIC OF MY MIND, GREAT sounds

What a great but so underrated guitarist this guy is. Unique approach and matser of those touch harmonics. Beautiful song. The album this came off of, "Silver Lining" is absolutely fantastic.
what a lovely gift of God.I would like to see this in my Church. We have so very few that can play at will which is why we should always realize the thousands if not tens of thousands of hours Gary Moore practiced. My bro started guitar late-17 and did 10 straight years around 7 a day before he got signed. A real pleasure for me has been a bigger, older, yet better. Davemasonwatchtoweryoutube. Some how I see Nils and them together in a true power band
"so he gifted himself" no no no. He worked his gifts the way the best do. Think of it this way--- This guy sings like an angel and yet I believe he got pretty jammed with alcohol. Was that a GIFT to himself? Or did a part of him try to destroy himself? The truth is any of us at any time could disappoint each other to the point that people walk away......When that happens you better hope God is there, or maybe you can snap your fingers and get out of an addiction
He is the greatest of all-he plays a guitar like no-one else-sometimes hard and sometimes so soft.He made Grin,he made Crazy Horse with NY,and he gave the Boss the great sound.Nils-every one should slänga sig i väggen, som vi säger i Sverige!
right on Mitchkaboola,../ craig5904,..i been a fan of Nils since about 1970,.i'm 58 and old school, the guy has tek,. and he's a soulful player, better yet, he's a guitar player with SOUL!( in my humble opinion.)
It does not get any better than this, does it?I would like to be able to paint the way he plays,or even write meaningful pieces about the state of the world!
Has never been among my favourite songs of his, but o.m.g. what a wonderful intro and what a beautiful solo. Nils is one of those very very very rare guitarists whose playing can make you weep with joy!!
Yes, and a blessing to kno0w he started recording at the beginning of his career at a little sound studio owned by a couple of guys in No. VA. I am not sure but it was either in or near Fairfax, VA We all know he is exceptionally gifted, but I just want to say tht he music world at lastge has really looked past him. I mean, just look and listen. No hype, no ego, nglam, just Nils and his fabulous style.
This is one of my all time favourite guitar solos...It seems to me that Nils is very underrated as a guitarist.
Bruce calls him on stage sometimes as the world's greatest second guitar. The reality is Steve Van Zant can't be Nil's waterboy. But he has to make a living so . . .
We have lost Jeff Beck, but fortunately Nils is still around. He is giving me the same kind of feeling. Never get bored listening to Nils.
Very very underrated
I would imagine fine guitar players would rate him but the general public wouldn't necessarily appreciate how great he is.

VALENTINE by Nils Lofgren
Today I'm thinkin' about the world we live in
All the love and hate that's floatin' around
All the times I felt so lost and helpless
You stood by me, you never let me down
Still I keep throwin' up these walls
Most of them I've built with stones
You tear 'em down and bridge the distance
Knowin' we ain't here to be alone
So let your blue heart open wide
Let's never leave our dreams behind
It would comfort and restore my pride
If you let me be your valentine
Our differences are part of life
Still love will pass the test of time
I want you every day and night
Girl, won't you be my valentine?
Be my valentine
Be my valentine
Be my valentine
Be my valentine, ohhh,
Still I keep throwin' up these walls
Most of them I've built with stones
You tear 'em down and bridge the distance
Knowin' we ain't here to be alone
So let your blue heart open wide
Let's never leave our dreams behind
It would comfort and restore my pride
If you let me be your valentine.
Our differences are part of life,
Still love will pass the test of time.
and I want you every day and night
Girl, won't you be my valentine?
Be my valentine
Be my valentine
Be my valentine
Be my valentine,
Be my valentine,
Be my valentine,
Be my valentine.

Nice tune.. Like it a lot.. Makes me think of my long lost friend.. who lives far away. :(
Love it anyway!! *both thumbs up!!*
Love this so much
He is the greatest of all-he plays a guitar like no-one else-sometimes hard and sometimes so soft.He made Grin,he made Crazy Horse with NY,and he gave the Boss the great sound.Nils-every one should slänga sig i väggen, som vi säger i Sverige!
thanks for uploading this video. A great song, such a feeling
right on Mitchkaboola,../ craig5904,..i been a fan of Nils since about 1970,.i'm 58 and old school, the guy has tek,. and he's a soulful player, better yet, he's a guitar player with SOUL!( in my humble opinion.)
It does not get any better than this, does it?I would like to be able to paint the
way he plays,or even write meaningful pieces about the state of the world!
Sensationally great!!!!!!!!
Very underrated guitarist ,song writer and performer.
Nils kills.....this is a sublime performance... he came to dance.
Has never been among my favourite songs of his, but o.m.g. what a wonderful intro and what a beautiful solo. Nils is one of those very very very rare guitarists whose playing can make you weep with joy!!
He's the best guitarist and I love his voice.
Crank up the volume, grab a beer and get lost in as near to heaven as you could ever imagine. Sublime
Frank Burton totally
Go and dig up every song by Grin and just grin. Nils has it to this day.
Questa canzone e bellissima !! Nils sei fantastico!!! 😅🤩🤩😍😍😘💞💞💘💔♥️💯
I think they call this an "eargasm"?
What can you say more about his tremendous virtuosity with the guitar?Great stuff. Thanks for posting it.
