Travis being a hugeass jock and being terrified of ghosts, spiders, insects, large beasts and anything necrotic or demonic in nature is one of the many reasons I love the man.
Marisha really put the team on her back in that staircase encounter. So smart to jump down to get to the device as fast as possible, knowing monk shit would protect her. Clutch investigation check to find how to disable the device, clutch strength check to actually disable it, clutch investigation check to find the keyhole, immediately knew to use the key she found earlier. Used her character's strengths perfectly

And there are different types of luck, when you roll you don't have control over the output when you make a decisions over your character actions and you jump in every time leaving your teammates in need while having a range/rogue character that can do this same thing and attack then yea you as a fight type character may come on top but you leave your support to die and that's not fun. People are welcome to play the game however they want within their groups, but he says “the rogue should’ve gone first” like it’s a law within D&D. Not one puzzle later, the rogue decided to stay in the back of the line - on her own - in character. It’s all for fun and role-playing. Is it the most optimal move for performance? Hell no, but that’s not the point here. I’m getting tired of people who try to dictate to others how they should play their games and call them stupid for not doing so.

I mean, Eldritch Blast is the ability name, Dope Monk Shit is a kinda lame catchphrase. Doesn't bother me, but it doesn't feel like an apples to apples thing. Also, they all exclaim abilities, ala "Dagger, dagger, dagger"all have catchphrases or idiosyncrasies that are varying degrees of fun in the context we see the cast.

@@hennysaud4867 You don't really have to do anything, just watch on twitch. But unfortunately, it's only available when watching live, not when watching a vod. The way it works is that it updates an overlay over the stream live as the players use dnd beyond, so it doesn't record the activity for future viewing.

@@jonathansolberg5072 I believe the captions have changed several times since the original comment was made. There is an entire thread in here somewhere about how bad the captions are, but they are all from 10 months ago and the captions seem perfectly fine to me. You can report mistakes you find to critroletranscripts or whatever it is, and they can fix them, so any mistakes have probably been cleaned up over time. My captions currently do say veelium.

Not sure how else Matt can explain how he would get past and then leave the party with; - A gate with a lock on the outside - Staircase with a trap that wasn't triggered or disarmed - A door that eats and ejects the key on the floor. No key on the floor when they got there. How'd he get past that door? - A door that requires three glowing hearts on the table. No hearts on the table or corpses on the floor from the ones he'd have to have killed or anything. I thought this was super obvious and was weirded out that none of the cast brought this up ._.

Early on, Jester gives Caduceus the choice between putting the celestial head in the haversack or casting speak with dead right now. Caduceus opts for the haversack. I feel like Jester and Caduceus are close to making a new catchphrase for the two of them: “Let’s haversack that head for now.”

90% of combat encounter concepts since the M9 got to Xhorhas were probably Matt thinking "what would get Travis visibly, hilariously frightened?", and with three different fights, this episode is a goldmine for spooked Travis faces :)

yeah I remember weird things about past characters go to plays, however I'm also a DM now so I've made it my job to memorize as much as I can for my players so I can help them work through their characters
He played Percy for a very long time, too! Mistakes happen, right? And clerics have a BUTT LOAD of spells. I almost constantly have to have my phone or a book out when I'm playing cleric, too.
Iv had moments like that, play a character for so long feels like they are a separate entity, co-worker used to call me by my characters name and id answer in his voice or I'd ask myself what he would do in social interaction, and I'd hear his voice chime in as I thought of it
Say what you will about Beau, but sliding down the staircase blindly amidst lightning-ridden mist and yanking the control element of the crystal, taking another blast, is simply epic. I love her :-)
its right to call it epic, because it worked all out. But boy, not knowing what was waiting downstairs or what was happening to her party members upstairs could have gone wrong in a multitude of ways..

Her party was slowly dying and she was able to find the source, figure out how it works, and turn it off all in one turn. if any of the other players had done this we would have all clapped and moved on but because it was Beau you guys are all like "Yea, but it could have gone like so so so so bad guys. Even though everyone else was also rushing out of the fog, because Marisha did a thing we gotta get mad."

Just a small thing I noticed when watching the spiral tower decent portion of the video. It was common practice to build such stairwells so if descending the wall would be to one's left and if ascending it would be to one's right. Basically from the bottom of the stairs, corkscrewing up counter-clockwise as is rises. This was a strategic build since if someone or something was attacking from below and since most people were right handed, they would be hindered due to space to swing a weapon. While those above would not be hindered since the open air was to their right. In this case though it works the way Matt has it set since technically the players are descending and the attackers so having the wall to their right as he has it built makes for a better defense of anyone on the stairs below that may be attackinh upwards.
You're almost right, most stairs were clockwise though, it's harder to swing a sword with your right hand when the central column of the stairs is in the way. Stabbing downwards, with your right hand against the wall offers much more space to defend. Source: I live in the UK, and love castles. Quick Google search confirmed I wasn't remembering incorrectly.
I always like the fact that real world insects and spiders are already so creepy that all Fantasy Worlds need to do to make them horrifying enemies is to say "How about this… but BIG!"
Very delayed but I’m currently playing a video game grounded that uses this to great effect. It’s basically like honey I shrunk the kids as a survival horror game. Wolf spiders are terrifying.

@@Deathnotefan97 Hes already said they are close by and confirmed that he passed the glowing hearts so they are on the right trail, they could certainly be getting had but they are on the right trail otherwise hoban would have told them to double back because whether he wants yasha and is at the end or is using them to clear the path for himself he has a vested interest in them being on the right path. there's no reason he would trick them into taking the wrong path cause he clearly wants some face to face time with yasha, and if they are clearing the path for him (unlikely since it seems like the heart room reset, there's still a monster in the mist, and generally what with the doors closing behind them it seems like most of the traps and things would be resetting) eben if he is using them sending them down the wrong path would clear only the wrong path and then that plan would just kinda be shit and he'd have to clear it himself. all Im saying is whether or not they're getting duped they're going the right way towards the trap

I feel like Beau's Natural 20 with legs dangling over the Abyss was very similar to Keyleth's Natural 20 when trying to touch the Orb of Death. Marisha has mad luck yo.
One would think with a 16 in WIS that she'd not do stupid and impulsive things that puts everyone at risk, especially when she loves getting on Caleb's case for the exact same thing. I have to give Marisha credit though, she plays hypocrites frustratingly well. Edit: I should clarify that I do really like Beauregard as a character. I think she's vastly easier to relate to than Keyleth was. As well as how well the entire M9 explore the vast amounts of grey area of morality.

@@river7874 Well Beauregard is a lancer character. She's essentially Caleb's foil. Yet most of the Mighty Neign exhibit one or two of the five man band trope. Caleb tends to channel the main protagonist trope most of the time, the smart guy trope, and can act as a lancer towards Fjord from time to time.
A fact about spiders I learned not too long ago (possibly knew before and forgot), the reason spiders' legs curl up when it's dead is because they actually don't have any muscle in their legs. How they extend and move them is based on hydraulics. They use their blood to pump their leg segments to extend them. So when they die, they no longer have any blood pressure, so they curl up from a lack of pressure.
Trust me, he knew both the proper title and that you were cringing. More importantly. He knows that you like him even more now. Sam is a charismatic evil geniouse.

Honestly the hourglass seams unfair as every round only takes 6 seconds of in-game time. If your going to have a timer it should be based on something in-game.
@@DammedMan. Nah, it's great. If the hourglass is in game, then the crew has unlimited time to plan and talk out their strategy, dramatically reducing tension. Having it in real life forces them to think quickly and act even faster. It makes things so much more stressful!
The stress the hour glass brings is nice but i think a similar effect could be had with a stop watch that could be paused for things like moving pieces that the players can’t really control the speed of.
@@siroreo I mean, you can always compensate for the missed time by waiting a minute or so to pull out the hourglass, or have an hourglass with a bit more time on it than needed.

I'm fairly new to the game. Seen some jokes about 1 shotting bosses. I was always like, "Yea, no way you can do it to a boss that's on par with your level." *Nott deals 70+ dmg in 1 round* -How do you wanna do this? *Me spilling my evening tea*
It’s very possible. In one of my games I crit a searing smite and did 102 damage against one of my fellow party members (we were both in an arena tournament) and he went from full health to below zero
If they paralyze a target and some hexadin (he-he) unlishes divine+eldritch+any spell smite on it with Caduceus Path to the grave that thing is donezo from 1 strike easily

@@Luinta I think it's more so the difference between a story experienced by the player vs. an audience. When you're an audience, initial plot hooks/promise need to progress much faster, and "divergent side quests" like these feels like a waste of time because you want to go back to having progress the main plot shown to the audience (which in this case is the chase, the conspiracy, etc). The author Brandon Sanderson has a course on fictional writing (on youtube) and this is a HUGE thing he pointed out IMO. However, in a video game, the player rarely notices themselves getting distracted. It's the reason why you can spend 100 hours playing side quests in Witcher 3 instead of pursuing the "urgent" main quest and not really feel weird.
VSKKG Mr Rogers made a point to say when he fed his fish because a blind, 5 year old girl’s mom wrote in to the show expressing worry that he might not be feeding his fish. Idk if this is the intension, but calling out numbers verbally helps not only blind viewers but also podcast listeners, making the show more accessable for everyone. If you think that doesn't make sense, one of the arguably greatest, if not the greatest, musicians of all time was nearly, if not completely, deaf when he wrote his greatest piece of music (Beethoven's 9th Symphony). Allow people to proscribe their own limits rather than the rest of us foisting our perceived limitations upon them. Fred had this nailed and Matt seems to get it as well, both setting an example the rest of us would do well to follow.

Marisha really put the team on her back in that staircase encounter. So smart to jump down to get to the device as fast as possible, knowing monk shit would protect her. Clutch investigation check to find how to disable the device, clutch strength check to actually disable it, clutch investigation check to find the keyhole, immediately knew to use the key she found earlier. Used her character's strengths perfectly

I mean, Eldritch Blast is the ability name, Dope Monk Shit is a kinda lame catchphrase. Doesn't bother me, but it doesn't feel like an apples to apples thing. Also, they all exclaim abilities, ala "Dagger, dagger, dagger"all have catchphrases or idiosyncrasies that are varying degrees of fun in the context we see the cast.

The way it works is that it updates an overlay over the stream live as the players use dnd beyond, so it doesn't record the activity for future viewing.

You can report mistakes you find to critroletranscripts or whatever it is, and they can fix them, so any mistakes have probably been cleaned up over time.

Just a small thing I noticed when watching the spiral tower decent portion of the video.
It was common practice to build such stairwells so if descending the wall would be to one's left and if ascending it would be to one's right. Basically from the bottom of the stairs, corkscrewing up counter-clockwise as is rises.
This was a strategic build since if someone or something was attacking from below and since most people were right handed, they would be hindered due to space to swing a weapon. While those above would not be hindered since the open air was to their right.
In this case though it works the way Matt has it set since technically the players are descending and the attackers so having the wall to their right as he has it built makes for a better defense of anyone on the stairs below that may be attackinh upwards.

You're almost right, most stairs were clockwise though, it's harder to swing a sword with your right hand when the central column of the stairs is in the way.
Stabbing downwards, with your right hand against the wall offers much more space to defend.

@@Deathnotefan97 Hes already said they are close by and confirmed that he passed the glowing hearts so they are on the right trail, they could certainly be getting had but they are on the right trail otherwise hoban would have told them to double back because whether he wants yasha and is at the end or is using them to clear the path for himself he has a vested interest in them being on the right path. there's no reason he would trick them into taking the wrong path cause he clearly wants some face to face time with yasha, and if they are clearing the path for him (unlikely since it seems like the heart room reset, there's still a monster in the mist, and generally what with the doors closing behind them it seems like most of the traps and things would be resetting) eben if he is using them sending them down the wrong path would clear only the wrong path and then that plan would just kinda be shit and he'd have to clear it himself. all Im saying is whether or not they're getting duped they're going the right way towards the trap

One would think with a 16 in WIS that she'd not do stupid and impulsive things that puts everyone at risk, especially when she loves getting on Caleb's case for the exact same thing.
I have to give Marisha credit though, she plays hypocrites frustratingly well.
Edit: I should clarify that I do really like Beauregard as a character. I think she's vastly easier to relate to than Keyleth was. As well as how well the entire M9 explore the vast amounts of grey area of morality.

@@river7874 Well Beauregard is a lancer character. She's essentially Caleb's foil. Yet most of the Mighty Neign exhibit one or two of the five man band trope. Caleb tends to channel the main protagonist trope most of the time, the smart guy trope, and can act as a lancer towards Fjord from time to time.
No jokes about Caleb, the Orphan-baker? I am disappoint.

A fact about spiders I learned not too long ago (possibly knew before and forgot), the reason spiders' legs curl up when it's dead is because they actually don't have any muscle in their legs. How they extend and move them is based on hydraulics. They use their blood to pump their leg segments to extend them. So when they die, they no longer have any blood pressure, so they curl up from a lack of pressure.

I was absolutely stunned when I went to my local friendly local game store for Adventurers’ League and played at a table where the girls outnumbered the boys, and an elderly mother sat with her 12 year old son. How the times have changed, and for the better, and I feel Critical Role has played a HUGE part in this ...
50 and can only manage one session most months, but that's okay, because my 10 year old daughter is one of the players in the group!

Honestly the hourglass seams unfair as every round only takes 6 seconds of in-game time. If your going to have a timer it should be based on something in-game.

Nah, it's great. If the hourglass is in game, then the crew has unlimited time to plan and talk out their strategy, dramatically reducing tension. Having it in real life forces them to think quickly and act even faster. It makes things so much more stressful!
The stress the hour glass brings is nice but i think a similar effect could be had with a stop watch that could be paused for things like moving pieces that the players can’t really control the speed of.

I mean, you can always compensate for the missed time by waiting a minute or so to pull out the hourglass, or have an hourglass with a bit more time on it than needed.

It’s very possible. In one of my games I crit a searing smite and did 102 damage against one of my fellow party members (we were both in an arena tournament) and he went from full health to below zero
in campaign 1 liam at some point did 105 dmg with assassinate sneak attack

If they paralyze a target and some hexadin (he-he) unlishes divine+eldritch+any spell smite on it with Caduceus Path to the grave that thing is donezo from 1 strike easily

@@Luinta I think it's more so the difference between a story experienced by the player vs. an audience. When you're an audience, initial plot hooks/promise need to progress much faster, and "divergent side quests" like these feels like a waste of time because you want to go back to having progress the main plot shown to the audience (which in this case is the chase, the conspiracy, etc). The author Brandon Sanderson has a course on fictional writing (on youtube) and this is a HUGE thing he pointed out IMO.
However, in a video game, the player rarely notices themselves getting distracted. It's the reason why you can spend 100 hours playing side quests in Witcher 3 instead of pursuing the "urgent" main quest and not really feel weird.

Idk if this is the intension, but calling out numbers verbally helps not only blind viewers but also podcast listeners, making the show more accessable for everyone. At least that’s what I think El Guapo means

If you think that doesn't make sense, one of the arguably greatest, if not the greatest, musicians of all time was nearly, if not completely, deaf when he wrote his greatest piece of music (Beethoven's 9th Symphony).
Allow people to proscribe their own limits rather than the rest of us foisting our perceived limitations upon them. Fred had this nailed and Matt seems to get it as well, both setting an example the rest of us would do well to follow.
