I have questions, when people like cory henry, chick corea, jesus molina, bill evans etc seat at the piano and start improvising, have they memorized what they are improvising, or it comes naturally? and to reach that level should I memorize my licks, patterns and scales etc. and improvise over different chords?
It comes naturally for them because they memorized a bunch of different licks, patterns, scales, and chords - in all 12 keys as well, over the course of years/decades. They also play all sorts of styles of music, not exclusively jazz, which helps to expand their skills and repertoire. I can't play nearly to the degree that they can, but even I can somewhat improvise while playing a song if I know it really well. It takes serious work and dedication to play at that level. Jesus molina talked about practicing as if it were his 9-5 job. So litterally hours a day, everyday.
