Jealous about the success of Donkey Kong Country for the fancy 16-bit system, Cranky arranges for King K. Rool to once again steal Kong's Banana Hoard, this time on a 8-bit system. It's yet again up for Donkey and Diddy to get them back!
This run aims to find all the bonuses and does that with an in game time of 31:09.

It really is impressive how far devs were able to push the game boy

      Not in these old games
In this one in particular though, it saves your game

I played this game religiously when I was a kid. I loved my Gameboy so much (I had the "Banana yellow" one), and had several games for it, but this was the first one I played. I remember being so proud when I beat K. Rool, and ran through each level time and time again until I had all the secrets. (I also remember hating the cloud levels).

It's just Collapsing Clouds that sucked, because they have the platforms like, TWO FRAMES before you dropped

In most games, cloud levels are only barely better than water levels in terms of frustration caused.

the programmers of the past did magic with the old games, those people managed it because it was not easy to put music in those little cartridges, all music is pure compressed sound.

This game was the most original of the Land trilogy!
These were their own unique level designs and world!
DKL2 and DKL3 were based on the DKC games!
Later there was a DKC on the GBC, but I like DKL more, because it was a unique experience instead of taking inspirations from the Country Trilogy! (and DK64 if you count the main menu)

    • @Argedis
      @Argedis 2 года назад +2

Agreed. The DKC on GBC was just a port much like Super Mario bros GBC.
DKL was original just like Super Mario Land.
Remakes were easy cash grabs I guess.

I think the idea that DKL isn't a downgraded port is also part of the game's lore. Something like Cranky saying they don't need fancy graphics to make a good game or something?
DKL2 was the first game I ever owned. I didn't realized till later how closely it followed DKC2, or at least as closely as a Gameboy could. Which in turn always confused me as to why DKL was so different from DKC. Anyways, neat stuff!

      Well considers donkeykong land 2 & 3 as a loose based version of donkeykong country 2 & 3 ,
And while donkeykong land 1 may be the most original game but i still do believe that it contains most assets from donkeykong country,

Yeah it closely resambles donkeykong country and while there is a donkeykong country port fort gameboycolor, BUT i really want to see someone to hack donkeykong land into donkeykong country for the original gameboy because that would be my death wish.

I always found it strange that they called these games Donkey Kong Land, it’s a weird way to reference the Super Mario/Wario Land series, and in retrospect it sounds like a title to a bootleg game where they spliced two names from two unrelated popular games. I’m sure that if you saw a game titled “Super Mario Country” or “The Legend of Zelda’s Dream Land”, you would automatically assume it’s a bootleg game.

Ok so as an adult I can clearly see that the live counter at the bottom of the screen are hearts
But as a kid I thought they were sharp gorilla teeth, and that every time you lost a life it was supposed to represent getting a tooth knocked out.

I like the part where developers and platform holders used ingenuity and effort to wring the very maximum out of a given system to develop technical masterpieces... :-(
And when the ape jumped on the enemy.

I remember this game being decent. The music's pretty good, especially the underwater tunes (as is required, that was the best song in the first game, in fact they added a second one for this game) and the boss tune jams (even if the bosses are more inconveniences than challenges, again, like in the first game), and it's Nintendo platforming on the go, what could go wrong? Well, I'll tell you what: In my case, the fact that almost every time you (as in any given player, not the player in the video) jump on an enemy, where you end up is only sort of in your control from how the game sometimes struggles to keep up with you, for some reason, and with this being a platformer, you do a lot of jumping on enemies.
I was worse at games then than I am now, but...seems like that would be something you'd want to nail. Still beat it, had fun, but frick.

Yeah, i fealt jumping on enemies in platforming games always teadious to land on solid ground for some reason. And, its just not on the 2D Mario games...😅

The music really was great. Underwater, snow, cloud autoscroller and the city levels music were fire, I was surprised it was NOT David wise that composed them.

This game was a challenge the cloud levels being the hardest. I didn't even reach the city level because I couldn't defeat the clouds on my first playthrough. 2nd level snow with flying pigs and there was 3 of those jumps!! Had to jump on both of the pigs! 3rd jump took me forever then there was a pirate ship with snakes falling of ropes and you had to dodge the snakes! Had to dodge the bee on the trampoline! That was hard but I got through and gave up after 100 tries on the binoculars. binoculars had a mind of his own and getting out of the square without falling off was too much effort. Where's the ground? There's hearts on the walls. Impossible level.
Also being chased endlessly by the nautilus. Eventually beat the game 5yrs later.
