I am in love with how you are addressing this problem, as a white girl who grew up in a major city, I was the "white" girl in my school my senior year. I was harassed by the other kids for being white. I was told by a teacher when I tried to get help that "only whites can be racist" and nothing was done. I could care less what color your skin is or what nation your from or the religion you practice, I care how you treat yourself and others around you. I love the way your not pointing fingers, that only devides us more.

My dad is the most important relationship I have ever had and will ever have. He got me into running which taught me got and determination, he taught he how to fix things, he taught me how to cook, how to read how to ride a bike, how to drive a car, how to write, how to think about math to be able to do it in my head, how to listen, how to comfort people, how to better communicate, damn near everything. Loved this! I discovered Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams just over 2 years ago. Prior to that, I hadn't really paid attention to politics. Now I can't get enough. One of my favorite lessons from Sowell, and which I relay to people as much as I possibly can, is that (some) things aren't getting better because we keep judging policies by how progressive they sound rather than on the outcomes.
Same with me. I discovered Sowell probably in 2019 I think. And I can’t get enough of it also. Prior to Sowell, i didn’t know how to analyze what politicians or media are saying. I had no idea whether they’re lying or misrepresenting. But now everything makes so much more sense now as to why things are the way they are
Sowell is kinda like Williams' spiritual successor.
@@hanh3000 Yes, 100%. Another important lesson I've learned is that today's media isn't really left vs right, it's establishment vs independent. My go-to journalists are now people like Glenn Greenwald, Kim Iversen, Matt Taibbi, Batya Sargon, Megyn Kelly, Tara Henley and channels like Breaking Points and Rising.

I am a black conservative, who actually voted for Donald Trump not once but twice. But I can’t stand blacks whose entire existence is to make the point that racism doesn’t exist in America. As a black man in America, I do not need to be convinced that racism exists in America. But I do feel that racism can be overcome with hard work, sacrifice, and good decision making.
Interesting.....Howard University recently did a study and the data they compiled said that it would literally take black people 228 years to amass the same amount of wealth as whites. So, that means that 228 years from now, blacks will still be dealing with poverty and ghettos...I sent DM's to both Elders and this Amala chick about the Howard findings several times and have had no reply at all...
Thats the part that im stuck on. Being conservative is one thing, but to act like racism and systematic racism doesnt exist is bs. I dont think that the race card should be used as a ticket to get out of something or to deflect from one's own short comings. I have been on both ends and to have another person of color tell me my experience is not valid because its unheard of or because they themselves havent experienced. I do believe black people's mindset is what is holding up back but that does not mean that racism is a root to SOME issues not all

Pre 1950's the black family were strong despite the racial violence towards us by white citizens backed by our government. I love how the events of that time was largely omitted.

How come we never discuss the big elephant in the room? Like the sellouts that look the other way when blacks are killed by blacks? But there are cars now where blacks have been killed by whites in cold blood and no charges. One guy in Ohio got out of his car and shot a 13 year old kid drove away they had to send Swat to his home to apprehend him and he was not charged. The kid had no w weapon and was running away. I guess he was a threat smh. It comforts racist to have people of color excusing the discrepancies so they can say blacks are just lazy or complaining for nothing.

Maybe it’s because I used to consider myself leftist too, but Amala’s my favourite of the conservatives podcasts.

To say racists voted for Trump after voting for Obama, doesn’t make sense, unless voting based on skin colour (because he’s black) is racist.
Having a Mormon president might have been as historic, it definitely would be weirder then having a black president, I’m not saying he was the right choice, but I definitely didn’t pay attention to Obama’s presidency because I thought any criticism would be seen as racist, even if they were legitimate concerns…. But we gave him a chance… and it didn’t solve racism (shocker)
My biggest regret is tuning-out of politics after ‘08 because I thought enough good had been done, and surely a black president means we’re in a post-racial society… now we’re all one, right? Black people don’t want to see themselves as black, right?

I agree with most of what you said except for the black people not wanting to be black as some sort of aspirational good. That is a terrible thing. There's nothing wrong with black people seeing themselves as black.
Great post. I thought and felt the same way as you did. I thought it was great that Obama was elected and now we can put certain things behind us. Also thought the same about criticism towards Obama must’ve been racist so I didn’t pay any attention to it. I even dismissed black conservatives who criticized Obama as Uncle Tom and I couldn’t stand to even read what they had to say.
@@amichiganblackman3200 I know what you mean, but I don’t think of myself as white (I don’t think white is an identity or means anything to whites), but I have Irish and French to fall back on (still doesn’t mean much). American blacks don’t have that, their history stops. I don’t want to be considered the same as other whites, I thought black people would feel the same, but it’s easier for them to consider themselves as one thing: black, as opposed to whites who think of themselves as Irish, French, German, English, Scottish.
I never thought of myself a White American, because I thought that was the point of America, we’re Americans first. My heritage interests me, but it isn’t my identity.
But I see the significance of black America in a historical context. They, as a people, are 400 years old. My people’s history finished in America, yours started.
I’m not a fan of the black/white/brown division, I’d rather mention countries of origins, but some people don’t known theirs, and I gotta accommodate

Why in America after so many years is there a separate black culture? As far as I'm aware black culture in USA has nothing to do with Africa yet black people are called African Americans... I also love that image of the great Thomas Sowell in the background next to the guitar. Sowell is one of the few people in world history who makes the title "social scientist" not sound like an oxymoron. Sowell brings a wonderfully scientific, factual, objective attitude into the field. He transformed his gifted mind with intensive application and beautiful scientific discipline such that one stands in awe of his talking and his writing. He's one of the masters of the millions of rubik's cube puzzles of economics and sociology.

Your current conversation puts me in mind of the lifelong fight against racism that Sammy Davis Jr put up because he truly believed in universalism. Colour shouldn't count. Now, I have adored this man all my life. The depth and breadth of his incredible talents were the stuff of legend. And his gorgeous voice oh my. He nearly worked hself to death with his work ethic determined to change things for people of colour. Eventually he did become "the world's greatest entertainer" . He was a phenomenom, but here's the rub, the more he gained nation wide and international stardom and not just acceptance but became genuinely loved the more his own people turned against him. Called him an Uncle Tom etc. Despite this he worke tirelessly, for the civil right movement, gave generously to causes like education for people of all colours. And because of him the doors were fiung open for all the black entertainers eho have followed him. My point is the sheer cussedness of people. He won over white people only to have his own people turn against him. Its a long hard battle to make people see sense, to see how racism is so corosive to the whole of society.. The world is currently going backwards but I guess now it's up to the brightest and best among you to fight it tooth and nail.

@@gotnatas Democrats and the media insist the Community Reinvestment Act, the anti-redlining law beefed up by President Clinton, had nothing to do with the subprime mortgage crisis and recession.
But a new study by the respected National Bureau of Economic Research finds, "Yes, it did. We find that adherence to that act led to riskier lending by banks."
Added NBER: "There is a clear pattern of increased defaults for loans made by these banks in quarters around the (CRA) exam. Moreover, the effects are larger for loans made within CRA tracts," or predominantly low-income and minority areas. To satisfy CRA examiners, "flexible" lending by large banks rose an average 5% and those loans defaulted about 15% more often, the 43-page study found.
The strongest link between CRA lending and defaults took place in the runup to the crisis - 2004 to 2006 - when banks rapidly sold CRA mortgages for securitization by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Wall Street.
CRA regulations are at the core of Fannie's and Freddie's so-called affordable housing mission. In the early 1990s, a Democrat Congress gave HUD the authority to set and enforce (through fines) CRA-grade loan quotas at Fannie and Freddie.
It passed a law requiring the government-backed agencies to "assist insured depository institutions to meet their obligations under the (CRA)." The goal was to help banks meet lending quotas by buying their CRA loans.
But they had to loosen underwriting standards to do it. And that's what they did. While the 1977 law was passed 30 years before the crisis, it underwent a major overhaul just 10 years earlier. Starting in 1995, banks were measured on their use of innovative and flexible" lending standards, which included reduced down payments and credit requirements.
Banks that didn't meet Clinton's tough new numerical lending targets were denied merger plans, among other penalties. CRA shakedown groups like Acorn held hostage the merger plans of banks like Citibank and Washington Mutual until they pledged more loans to credit-poor minorities (see chart).
WaMu CEO Kerry Killinger has blamed the CRA for his bank's overexposure to risky loans. He said he wanted to tighten lending requirements, but "such measures would have presented other issues such as the company's CRA rating and its commitment to serving its (low-income and minority) customers and communities."
Other large banks have reported serious delinquency rates on CRA home loans. Bank of America's 2009 10-K states: "Our CRA portfolio comprised 6% of the total residential mortgage balances, but 17% of nonperforming residential mortgage loans."
Under Clinton's revised CRA, moreover, banks for the first time earned CRA credit for purchasing subprime securities.

Thanks for this conversation Amala. I'm a black woman and have some follow up questions to this conversation (i come in peace 🏳️lol). Would love your thoughts on it, as I feel you are a fair and genuine voice of the right.
1. I feel like the first question was sort of glossed over. I think Larry said something about how "Black Wallstreet" was rebuilt, but honestly I'm still curious about your thoughts on why it needed rebuilt in the first place.
2. I totally agree with the point of loan denials being linked to credit scores. Correlation doesn't mean causation and here that means it's not being black that's causing the loan denials but the credit scores. That's totally fair. But I have a few follow ups to that:
A) What about more blatant examples, albeit it may be rare, where the same home is appraised for less when a black couple shows it vs a white couple. Idk how much data is available on the experiment details, but the only way I can see this not being racist is if the sample size was really small. No 2 appraisers will give the same appraisal, but if this happened 100 times over, there would appear to be some bias there.
B) why do you believe black Americans have lower credit scores in the first place? Speaking from personal experience, I have an excellent credit score and had no problem purchasing a home. But one could argue that a lot of things had to go right for me in order to not be subject to the same issues many other African Americans experience. For example, I am educated on personal finance. Most of this education did not come from my parents nor grade school. It wasn't until I got to college did I learn personal finance. Since our education system sucks, many people regardless of race won't know the basics of personal finance until they go to college. But not everyone goes to college (nor should they). I'm assuming most of the African Americans with the worst credit scores are those who didn't go to college. I'm also assuming African Americans are least likely to graduate from college than some of their counterparts. If this is so, why? Perhaps because it's unaffordable, or because there is less precedence for it in their family. Why? Because going to college for African Americans wasn't that popular of an idea until recent generations. At least this is the way I look at it. Not even saying this is an exclusive black problem. Plenty of white people fall into this same circumstance. But when the numbers lean so heavily towards one group, I'm curious of your thoughts on why that is.
C) I totally follow the logic of all the defaulted loans that Larry mentioned. Makes sense. Those loans should have never been granted. But what would be interesting is to see how many other races were granted the loans with the same shitty credit scores. You hear of people defaulting on their loans and overspending all the time. This is not a black and white issue. But if say white people are getting loans with the same credentials, that would be a case for bias. I'd be curious to see those numbers. If they were also denied the loans at the same rate, then I could submit to Larry's argument.
2) The fatherless household theory has always been interesting to me, but I wonder if this is another case of observed correlation, not causation. I definitely believe a 2 parent household is better than 1, but I also think we discount situations in which a child is raised by 1 parent and other family members like grandparents and/or aunts and uncles. If the argument is to have a male figure in their life, but an uncle or grandfather are in the picture, one begs to question if there's more to it. For instance, maybe a contributing factor for delinquent behavior is less supervision because 1 or both parents have to work. Perhaps these parents are also absent because they we trying to pay rent and childcare is expensive. There's definitely a whole other conversation here warranted about procreating without the financial means to do so, but just speaking for the kids and not the parents, they may act up for a myriad of reasons. Who knows what kind of stressers poverty has given them that leads to lashing out. White parents get divorced all the time but I'm not sure if white kids on single parent households have the same outcome at the same rate. (FWIW, I'm by no means defending absent black men, nor black women who mindlessly procreate with them).
3) Regardless of where one falls in this discussion, I think the most useful discussion would be, how do we get everyone regardless of race who want to succeed a fair chance? Or is it your belief that they already have that chance? If so, why do you believe something like home ownership is still so out of reach for so many African Americans (and also others, but disproportionately so for AAs)? It seems to me like this discussion focused a lot on the symptoms of what one might consider systemic racism, not the actual acts of racism (ex: higher car insurance isn't a racist act, but could be a symptom of the result of racism).

Let me say this to you as a dad.
Grandparents are not dads. Uncles are not dads. Dads are in a whole different category.
What I bring to the equation as a father is uniquely me.
It's hard to explain. But a child especially a little boy looks to his dad as his hero his protector. His buddy.
Look at the relationship you see with your male friends. There is a bond we have with each other. Very few women will ever be allowed into . It's a guy thing.
We guys can never be amoungst the girls and even think we got the inside track to what they are talking about. We know it and you do too.
My daughter was treated different than I treated my son's. They re different .
Dads are like that too. My brother had a short relationship whit my daughter when she was little. It's not the same. You could see it by the way see looked at him. She liked him. But I was her Dad..
I can t say it any different than that.
We dads were called to be honourable strong righteous fun loving tender.
And because the black community had that ripped away from them they now have no mentors for the young guys. And I can tell you that a women is not a substitute for a dad.
And when your having babies at 15 years old and your mom and grandma did the same. You have no point of reference as to what is good .
And a dad has to be in the house to make a difference. Having breakfast supper. Doing home work etc etc. And the neighborhood doesn't t make a difference. Because dads will straighten out the knuckleheads of the neighborhood. .
To add on to the fatherless homes issue: It is not just another case of an observed correlation. Growing up in a fatherless home is one of the greatest predictors of poor life outcomes for young men (lower graduation rates, lower rate of college attendance, higher chance of committing crime) and there is a good amount of psychological research available on the subject. This issue affects all groups but naturally has the greatest effect on the demographic with the highest rate of fatherlessness. I hope this information is helpful.

"However, there is no evidence from the preferred specification that Black or Hispanic families receive lower returns on their property once controlling for factors such as years of occupancy and overall house price movements in the market." Blacks also are less likely to pay back loans with the same credit score.
Sis I was waiting for this comment! Thank you for spelling out all the underlying questions that were glossed over. Nothing in this video was debunked to me. As you said, there's another layer of questioning to all those points about how black people ended up there in the first place.
I'm a new follower of Amala's and really the only things I disagree with her are her views on race. But this comment is golden! Great discussions all around.

A sample was giving 90% loans to people equal to 6 times their annual "stated" income.
"There are two rules: first is that you should only spend a maximum of 30% of your gross income on a monthly mortgage payment. Second, the value of your home should not cost more than three times your household's annual gross income."
And now it's almost impossible to get a home loan, so people are stuck paying rent that's often 50% of their monthly income. I'm stuck in that situation right now. Hoping at the end of the year I can get into a mobile home because at least the mortgage would be cheaper

Absolutely agree with his take on the Government's duplicity on the 2008 housing collapse. The one thing Larry Elder left out on the Banking Crises was that most of the loans that were foreclosed on were variable rate mortgages. When the rate jumped, the people could not make the payments.
The 2008 was brutal: subprime mortgage, high levels of debt and a lack of regulation in the financial sector. I was underwater in a bad way. Glad I stuck it out.

As a 77-year-old white Texas man who married an ebony queen in 1971, had a 25-year marriage with her until her untimely passing, and has six black godchildren who I helped raised to become successful adults, all I can do is shake my head at the skewing of facts in this discussion. Having lived in both black and white America (and these are two different worlds), working in predominantly white offices for over 50 years, being fired more than once for having a black wife, having sat at meetings with school officials who dissed my kids natural hair, and having many times seen and experienced overt racism personally, all I can say is what planet are you conservative Blacks on? I actually did some fact checking, and Tulsa wasn’t rebuilt immediately. Those residents and their descendants still haven’t been compensated for their homes being destroyed. He is however correct when he says that it wasn’t called Black Wall Street until it was rebuilt.

FACTS about CRA. I worked in banking/ lending during those years and he is one thousand percent correct. BTW as a lower middle class white person, I could've easily overborrowed on a house that I bought in 2002 and I refused to do it and when I saw how hard the realtor and mortgage lender were pushing me to overborrow I thought what a load of garbage and when the crash happened I was not surprised AT ALL.

The inconvenient truths NEED to be talked about. I recently had a conversation with a black friend about the way that we all view each other and the fact that, conscious or not, we all evaluate each other. My evaluation of him is that he is an intelligent, decent family man who is hard working. At the start of our conversation he made several statements often used by the "everything is racist" talking heads to include some pretty negative remarks about whites in general. I asked him if he truly believed what he had just said, I think he felt my surprise in what he was saying, and then he said something really interesting. He said, "There are many black people, white people and Hispanic people that I don't want to have anything to do with or have around my family" I smiled and said, "You know, I feel the same way, you could be purple for all I care. What's important to me is your character and behavior." He smiled and our conversations have gotten very interesting indeed. In case you are wondering I am of Puertorican heritage.

While there were indeed efforts to rebuild the community after the Tulsa Race Massacre, it's important to understand that the rebuilding process was challenging and did not fully restore the previous level of prosperity. The massacre resulted in the loss of lives, property, and businesses, leading to a significant decline in Black wealth and economic power in the area. While some rebuilding occurred, the long-term impact of the massacre on Black wealth and the community's overall well-being cannot be understated.
This isn't the only prosperous Black community they've done this to. It was across the United States. I can't believe two beautiful Black people are denying systemic racism. Laws were passed, housing racial discrimination places, stopping Black's from building credit all contributed into destroying Black generational wealth.

Important episode. A lot of debunking, regarding "systemic racism." However, our country does have it's biases. Examples are, or could be, public schools in low income neighborhoods have worn-out books compared to public schools in middle class areas, that have good-quality books. Or, historically, cops have falsified evidence to setup random people, in high crime areas, who had nothing to do with the crime that was committed. On the flip side, wealthy people can get away with non-violent crime offenses, or serious crime offenses, with a high-priced lawyer... I heard of a true story of cops giving summons to blacks drinking alcohol in front of their homes, however, whites would drink alcohol in parks, and that was fine...
I'm purposely conveying these controversies because, maybe systemic racism is overblown, but, America has a history of corruption, or "unfairness", throughout its short history. And one can say " life is not fair," but if it's not fair, by design, than that's a different story.
Kind of like, through hard work you become financially successful. However, if our financial system is purposely setup to keep the masses financially struggling (keep people in debt, always raising the cost of living, creating so many rules/regulation where, if you break a rule/regulation, your career is over. Or, if the stock market crashed your company could be financially ruined), what's the point of hard work!?

I'm not going to lie to you having Larry elder on your show but listening to you and your questions and your feedback you are one amazing young lady and I applaud you
Ultimately the discussion is how to create a more fair arrangement for the impoverished. I could empathise with the people who are poor feeling like they're a paycheque away from losing their home, thinking the system was unfairly targeting them. A better outcome for a family may just be to leave those cities as if you're low income you're still probably better off in a small town than concentrated with high crime and low options for identifying children with promise.
In Australia we put a lot of universities in regional areas to keep them affordable and university degrees tend to focus on a subject area, we've only just started to get universities who think social engineering is appropriate, eg consent lessons and cultural sensitivity class. Maybe America needs more competition in the education space, eg programming/maths etc don't need a university

I think the fatherlessness thing is huge.
I think there is a conversation about that we need to have, and haven't had yet.
"Dispensable" men decimated black America from the 1970s on.
How much black on black crime and violence, homicide, brutality, plays itself out as proxy for the rage learned by fatherless black boys?
And where is the leadership to finally address all this?
I think it's partly politics, but I think it's also partly a gender thing. I think over the past 50 years a certain socio-political power spread has expanded and separated black men and women.
We can look at almost any other ethnicity of minority, or marginalized, or impoverished people - and see that the achievement gap shrinks and that these communities thrive by comparison. Standing on a foundation of family values, and most important - intact families.
There has to be a sea-change.
The old culture isn't working. Not as it is.
And we now have way too many white liberals who (whether they mean to or not) work hard at maintaining the power structures and controls they favor and support, that wind up keeping so many blacks "in their place."
And we wonder, where is this real "systemic" racism everyone talks about?
Well, it's a little embarrassing, isn't it? Hiding right under our noses, perpetrated by the hucksters who make a living off it. Many, many more white race hucksters making large money, benefits and job security, than blacks. That's a fact.
Why should I be surprised? It's an entrepreneurial, free-enterprise, conglomerate industrial success story. It's what we do best. Better than solving a problem that, had we managed that back when Civil Rights Acts were first signed, would have had an entire ethnic 13% of America perched in the same per capita income ratios as most of the rest of the country.
I get disgusted just thinking about how so many have a vested interest in NOT solving racism. And lord knows how many readers (no-one hardly ever reads what I write) would accuse me - of being racist.
Funny thing about that. The actual criteria used, the definition, the meaning, the impact, the measurement, the consequence, plays out in ways that don't even seem to incorporate anymore, values, morals, judgements, compassion, forgiveness, and a bunch of good old American habits and attitudes that used to earn the respect they deserved.
Because they worked. We got somewhere.
