Death World is a planet in which the native flora and fauna has evolved into naturally aggressive and dangerous forms. These eco-systems are finely balanced between continual destruction and lightning-fast reproduction. Death worlds take many forms, ranging from jungle-covered hell-holes with carnivorous plants and animals to barren, volcanic wastelands racked by ion storms. The most famous and notorious Death World is the hellish planet of Catachan.
Some worlds can be turned into Death Worlds, like what occurred on Indiga after numerous captive giant predators escaped from their zoos. When this happens, these worlds are labeled as Man-Made Death Worlds.
Humans can, and do, live on these worlds, but it is a never-ending struggle. On many death worlds it is as if the entire bio-mass of the planet were consciously motivated against human settlement - concentrating forces against intruders to destroy them. Death worlds with human settlements or colonies can have populations of 1,000 to 15,000,000

Personally I like Catachan for one fact: A demon invasion happened and Catachan won.
Not the humans, the planet.
Just like Poison Ivy said in Arkham Knight. Nature always wins.
There's also evidence that the Tyranids tried something there long, long ago. They failed. Instead of the 'nids consuming and integrating Catachan's fauna, Catachan absorbed the leftover Tyranid bioforms into its ecology, and that's where you get things like the Catachan Devil.
It’d be ironic if it was nurgle demons.
I shit you not, their ecosystem also has tyranids, the planet is so dangerous that the universe destroying bugs got integrated into the food chain.

One of my favorite lesser known death words is Vallia.
It is a jungle planet full with carnivore plants and animals that fell under Tau control.
However, every time the Tau send expedition fleets all the living creatures would swarm and slaughter them.
It was latter discovered that the planet itself was fully sapient and every animal,bug, plant and microorganism in it was part of a hive mind controlled by it and saw all alien life as invaders to be extrerminated.
Currently the Tau are trying to find a way to communicate with the planet in order to convince it to join the greater good.
Holy crap that's amazing. We had the old Necron Death Star, the Tyranids are working on theirs (Hive Fleet Tiamat's continent-organism), and now we have the potential for the Tau to find their own too! And through the Power of Friendship no less!!!
Imagine if they managed to get the planet to join though, it's literally peak Greater Good already.

The hilarious thing about Death Worlds is you'd think Primarchs who grew up on one would be more likely to turn traitor. But nope, half the loyalist and only one traitor ended up on a death world.
Granted, Horus and Fulgrim were both from planets that were only just barely better than a death world. But so was Dorn, so...
Is there much lore about Horus' homeworld? Besides some vague reference to gangsters I haven't come across any.

@MachineMan-mj4gj yep. Cthonia and Chemos were resource poor barren rocks that sucked to live on but didn't have anything super dangerous about them. Inwit meanwhile was the closest to being a death world, being a freezing rock with dangerous predators, but was just barely kinda habitatable-ish so it was disqualified.

Chaos daemons canonically got summoned onto Catachan at one point, and the Jungle Fighters just withdrew and let the planet take care of them.

That planet eats EVERYTHING: humans, chaos daemons, traitor astartes, T'au, Drukhari, Orkz, its own flora and fauna, Tyranids. Even the 'Nids cannot conquer and devour Catachan because none of their scouts have ever returned.
They've probably fucked, killed, and eaten, not in that order, bigger things then a Bloodletter.

So Fenrisian Ice Trolls. Bladed limbs, chitinous carapaces, purple ichor for blood... sound like a certain extragalactic species to anyone else? Same with the Kraken and Frostwyrms. The Wolves also have an artifact called the Krakens Egg which Mr Russ is said to have taken from the Kraken he killed. Solo. Kraken have tentacles _15 miles/24 kilometres_ in length, just as a side note. Anyways the Egg: AdMech believes that it is Tyrannic in origin. I like the implications of a world settled during the Dark Age of Technology already having Tyranid bioforms.
Probably Catachans have some elaborate sign-language, just for between them. But when they speak low Gothic they woukd sound like Kurt Russell rehearsing his role as Snake.
New headcanon acquired: They all sound like MGRR characters, including the sharp inhale through their teeth mid-sentence.

For the Only War TTRPG, you could make your own custom regiments from a combination of planets, regiment doctrines, and specializations. I ended up making a Death World regiment called the Fenrisian Huscarls. They were meant to be a tanky melee focused regiment that used armour breaking weaponry. Our GM had us fight an offshoot of the Tyranids which were just the bugs from Starship Troopers, and there was a moment where my guardsman was inside the tank and the Nids claw came down and just barely missed killing him. So what did he do? He stabbed his sword into the claw as it was pulled out of the tank and he climbed up that giant bug until he found a weak spot and just went to town until it died. He got a promotion for saving the rest of the squad, but lost his arm in the process. Worth it.

love me some OW. I once was the GM for a campaign where the players were part of a penal legion that got liberated by the Tau to then fight the PDF to fully take over the planet since it was just completely left in the dust by the imperium. one of the players played a Ratling that got chaos mutation sickness so bad her bones melted, the squad leader literally never hit a single shot with her bolt pistol the entire campaign, the resident stranded tech priest almost fried his own cyborg brain trying to comprehend an ork snazzgun. fun times.
I made a Regiment once called the Necris Mortian 469th Grenadier Regiment.
A Deathworlder regiment focused on explosive-armaments, cuz the homeworld's natural predators have naturally adapted to survive the unbelievably lethal necrotizing atmosphere of the world. Everyone lives underground and a full-ABC type suit is needed or necrotizing death really fast. limb needing to be cut off and cauterized if exposed even minimally.
Planet is also one of those very deathtrap places that looks verdant, lovely and inviting from orbit. you hate it every second of your remaining life the moment you're exposed to it's atmosphere.
Deathworld Bloop: a world size spacehulk. Inhabited by (somehow loyal?) humans. Along with their foes orks, tryanids, daemons, and (of course) the occasional Dark Eldar raiders.
Isn't that the Arks of Omen? (But without the loyalists)

DK, there was a short story about a young man on Catachan who was attempting his Guard initiation out in the jungle. A Catachan Devil ended up hunting the initiates and the hero Of this story in particular. At one point, the hero stumbles across a Barking toad and somehow arranges for the Catachan devil to stumble upon it, which obviously weakens the devil with the explosion. Still survives, but I think the hero manages to kill the wounded devil and his father and some warriors find the injured hero limping back home barely alive

Gahena: a world covered in fast growing forest and burrowing animals all settlements must be underground due to its unique storms. Its atmosphere stretches so far out that helium freezes into hailstones the helium hail is then sucked down in strong hurricane winds and grow as wayer freezes to them before being thrown to the ground between 10 and 100 times their original size. If not collected and melted by promethium the helium will evaporate and and expand until the surrounding ice explodes into violent shrapnel. A single hailstones is nearly a third as powerful as a modern frag grenade with storms dropping as many as a thousand per square mile. Even underground sunrise is often felt rather than seen.
I have that Catachan Jungle grass. It's so heretical you'll say "Where's Horus?"
I would like to mention that Catachan is referenced in various books, and the main product that they export other than troops is... wood. Planetary Governors often have furniture make out of it and it costs a fortune.

Fun fact, The lesser Barking Toad had rules in 3rd ed. They moved in random directions and if they came into contact with anything it exploded with the same profile as a demolisher cannon.
For the "pip pip cheerio" guard, there's the Praetorian Guard, which are basically victorian british expeditionary troops transplanted to 40k. Their homeworld is basically a whole planet's worth of London, which has to be one of the most terrifying things GW ever came up with.

In Straken, there's a Catachan who acts odd, Lavant, I think. Straken knows he's a Catachan but his manner reminds him of Cadians. Clean, pencil stache type dude.

I like how this non-aligned part of the universe, the concept of death worlds, is so cloesly linked to the guard specifically. They have to use this atrocious environments to keep up. This is great worldbuilding
Many of the toughst space marine chapters recruits from deathworlds too.
@@davidfrancisco3502 Yeah, but the emperor and the heresy and the personality of the Primarch are such big parts that the Death World loses importance in relation. Not saying it's dispensable, it's part of their backstory, but unlike for the guard regiment, it's not 90% of their identity

According to Ciaphas Cain, it's not just Catachans that tends to make Commissars disappear, although they're probably the most blatant about it, he tries to teach to his cadets that being easy on the men will prevent you from dying in battle from a shot in the back XD
Even regular guardsmen could want to "reroll" the Commsiar they were assigned to if they find him too trigger happy or intolerant. And well, the Guard is dangerous, even for officers :p

I recommend the Deathworld book series by Harry Harrison. It's not 40K, but it's clear where GW shamelesly stole the idea for Catachan from. :)
