I think you proved all you had to with the Hero 4 footage insert, aside from stabilisation, straight video recording/quality hasn't really progressed in all this time. Or at least to the point where it should be night and day obvious. Excellent, honest and very fair/balanced review 👍 Cheers, Dave.
I have the hero 12 and it’s my first GoPro, I just got it as a gift for my birthday. I absolutely love it for what it is. I don’t even use it as an action camera. I just use it for a vlogging and recording daily activities and really, really small, bombproof camera. I can keep in my pocket. Super impressed with the GoPro app and it’s really fun to work with overall. It’s just a fun little camera. I have a Sony ZV1, which I love and I definitely have my eyes on the pocket 3 as an eventual gimbal camera, but if I just wanna throw a little camera in my pocket and not worry about it, the GoPro is the one. It’s so tiny, unobtrusive and also takes great still photos.
I recently made a video asking the same question. I think we’ve just about reached the pinnacle of what we can expect from action cameras. Future ‘improvements’ will be more about form factor and user experience. Excellent video! 👍
Apparently GoPro 13 will have not only blue but also yellow green red green, you know, a rainbow like this beer, I just don't remember the name because it probably went bankrupt😂😂😂
I agree that the editing suite is half the appeal. I have a GitUp 2 action camera and still haven't done anything with my 2017 Ride the Rockies footage because it's saved on Windows movie maker or some sh*t
Thank you for your interesting toughts. Mostly agree with you. Nevertheless I think there still is good progress in action camera hardware. E.g. 120fps on Hero 11 is much better quality than on Hero 9. It's not only 2.7k vs. 4k. Hero 9 does quite a lot of line skipping on high frame rates. So it's considerably below "real" 2.7k. That said, I think will skip Hero 12.
Good honest info … pre ordered my 12 just because I have all the others .. your HDR vid comparison is best I’ve seen. hoping the HDR vid mode helps my mtn bike clips goin in and out of the shadows and sunlight … what ya think ?
The HDR is a tough one. When I tested that mountain biking, I found it way more subtle than my rock climbing example. I think GoPro's own promotional video for the Hero 12 and HDR feature is a little bit over the top and maybe edited to show the HDR off more.
They sent it because I also wrote a gear review on GearJunkie testing this camera out which you can read here! gearjunkie.com/technology/gopro-hero-12-review
I love my GoPros and agree with you, the quality is only slightly better with each version. But GP always seems to include a little something to each upgrade to make me think about upgrading. I skipped the 11 since I have the 10 and several old models. I use that app all the time and the other feature I love is pulling a still from a video clip. The quality just went up again to 27MP. up from my 10 at 19.6. but can you see the difference? maybe? the vertical mode and new night modes are why I upgraded... BTW, Love seeing some of my favorite trails in Boulder! (Walker Ranch - clockwise or counter?)
Glad to see somebody else appreciate the ever improving QUIK app! I've been using it for over 2 years and made over a hundred videos (mostly of my road biking). I cobbled together a out front handlebar mount for my GoPro MAX for some cool, hands free, video capture. Here's the playlist of videos I've made with QUIK: ruclips.net/p/PLptEraJ_CZ0o9MC1Jqfb8yKF6Vspw8stI&si=ec3Wa4pf9BA5N-Cj
I also want to know if the original max lens mod is compatible with the GP12 and if so, a comparison between it and the v2 because lots of us already have the v1 and knowing this could save lots of us good money if its close enough
it appears to be the same mounting system, and GoPro in one of their promotional videos showed that they have the max lens mod and the max lens mod 2 both available to activate in the settings, implying that both are usable for the 12
Personally the quik app has been a nightmare lol. Takes me 5 tries for it to connect to wifi, sometimes i gotta reconnect to wifi. Its only with go pro aswell
Sorry to hear that! I've been pretty impressed with it, and lately I've been really liking how I can put the GoPro on a mount and check if the camera angle is good by connecting to my phone and seeing the picture there instead of hoping it's a good angle.
Since I bought my GoPro 3, software and overall reliability has been a continuous struggle. Quick is still unreliable and suck feature wise if you compare it to competitors. IMO. I’m selling my GoPros on eBay this Christmas season. Enough is enough.
They sent me a camera to review and it isn’t sponsored. I also write reviews on GearJunkie.com, which publishes unbiased reviews of outdoor gear. So, I also wrote a gear review that you can read here gearjunkie.com/technology/gopro-hero-12-review
@Natemitka how can they send you a camera but it's not sponsored by them ? That exactly what a sponsor is. And gopro sends cameras to test to small channels? Just say u spent 427 on it like the rest of us bro.
I do wonder if go will soon release a compatible high quality Bluetooth mic. Be uas eif they dont, the only really interesting ipgrafe is totally useless. The airpod thing is just stupid, it sounds utterly unusable even compared to the built in mics
The 12 is the 11 with little blue speckles on it. That's absolutely wild. Borderline criminal by GoPro. If anybody buys the 12, you are flushing cash down the toilet.
GoPro fired an entire segment of their customer base by removing GPS. It's nonsensical that they use analytics from their worthless Cloud app when anyone using GPS uses real software on PCs

Only worthy pre-release video ive seen so far, thanks Nate 👍
Glad you liked it Rob!
Another super helpful discussion of the benefits of the camera.
Same as phones you see a old 4k can't tell what year phone make it because is very good

nice input with the GP4 ! smart....new to your channel so about to check out your thoughts on the dji action 4. thx
I recently made a video asking the same question. I think we’ve just about reached the pinnacle of what we can expect from action cameras. Future ‘improvements’ will be more about form factor and user experience. Excellent video! 👍
Agreed!
That Betasso flow 🤙 Great video!
Thank you!
Hey Nate, looks like you have both GoPro 12 and DJI Action 4. Could you please do a comparison video? No one is doing right now😅
That sounds like a great idea! I’ll work on that
Thank you for this review :)
I'm using a GoPro8 for my hiking channel.
Do you think I should upgrade to GoPro12 or DJI Action 4?
I would probably recommend the GoPro 12 over the DJI, purely because the app for GoPro is really enjoyable to use
Apparently GoPro 13 will have not only blue but also yellow green red green, you know, a rainbow like this beer, I just don't remember the name because it probably went bankrupt😂😂😂
So, as i have a Go Pro HD Hero since September 2010, do you think it is the time for this one ?
If you're rocking a 2010 GoPro I think you would be fairly blown away with the improvements of the newer models!
@@Natemitka Yep really i have :) i am excited to buy this new one. Do you recommend accessories for recording on horse ?
Ufff the quick app is what’s holding me for moving to the dji 4… are you gonna do some comparison video?
That sounds like a great idea and there have been a lot of comments about DJI vs GoPro. I'll work on it!
I have a Go Pro 6 Black, do you think it is worth to upgrade? And if yes, wich one do you recomend?
Great video, your 410th subscriber.
Thanks for subscribing!
I love the Quick App Pro 🙌
Yeah! It’s pretty good
im on hero 7 and honestly thinking about upgrade.
Thanks for sharing all this information... great job! 🤘🤘👍👍👍
I agree that the editing suite is half the appeal. I have a GitUp 2 action camera and still haven't done anything with my 2017 Ride the Rockies footage because it's saved on Windows movie maker or some sh*t
I think the world needs to see an edit of your 2017 Ride the Rockies ride!!!

Good point!
Is the footage from the hero 12 and the hero 11 pretty much the same?

needed to be said 👍
That was an excellent review 👏.
Hi, is Gopro Hero 12 or DJI Osmo Action 4 better? or is it better to focus on the Hero 11?
I think the footage out of all three of those cameras is fairly comparable! If you like the footage from the Hero 11 I’d say stick with that!
if only day time footage then Hero 11 with gps hardware. if both day and night then osmo action 4.
Broo who did they send you the new camera?
They sent it because I also wrote a gear review on GearJunkie testing this camera out which you can read here! gearjunkie.com/technology/gopro-hero-12-review

thanks u so much for your reply bro

Will lt record in 4K 24P?
Yeah!
The 12 will be a big upgrade from my Hero 7 that stop 2 weeks ago.@@Natemitka

btw does the HDR video apply to all video ratios?
Yeah! All aspect ratios. You can select HDR on or off!
That’s great explanation dude and Sub 428
Workin on it!
They didn't improve the thermals, they removed the GPS that's why it lasts longer
biggest improvement is action 4 low light performance. This video is a bit dishonest.
yes dji low light performance is much better
Well done, Nate!
Thanks dawg!!
Firmware update on hero 12 is the only difference vs 11. More efficient battery use and useless lens for 100$ extra thats it.
I was hoping for so much more! Like a larger sensor, reliability, close focus, cropping ability, less lens flare, etc etc.
I'm confused. They sent you a camera you got 470 subs but the video isn't sponsored by gopro at all? Which is it?
They sent me a camera to review and it isn’t sponsored. I also write reviews on GearJunkie.com, which publishes unbiased reviews of outdoor gear. So, I also wrote a gear review that you can read here gearjunkie.com/technology/gopro-hero-12-review

Nice vid cheers
Bursts of 1000 FPS would be cool
I agree!
Gopro is getting better ❤
The GoPro promo footage is suspicious at best. There's no way that most of that footage came from a GoPro.
Seems like alot of hate on Go pro in general yet everyone has one 😂😂😂. I'm still using a cheap action camera. Guess I saved myself 400 bucks 🤷🏻♂️
go pros break sooner than action 4 cameras
Nice! ... 😀👍
👌👌👌📸🔥
