I think his comment was bit misinformation Avalon clear balances pre like focsurite but king of clean gain smooth rnb ish never gives things edgy feel based what the transformer is giving warmth from spec, hearing and information form top peeps @@wavescentralstudios
Tube pres are almost always warmer so the 737 is always going to sound warmer. The Solid State (transformer) pres like the 1073 will have more color and drive.
I've had the opportunity to work with both preamps hands-on with a SonyC800g,TLM103,U87, and a Manley Reference. All were run through a Cl1B compressor which already has its own color and sound so I'm just speaking from observation when I say the Avalon has warmth. For my taste I wouldn't run a Manley or C800G through a 1073 because it's too harsh for my taste and ears when mixing, coming from mics that are already bright. And to be honest running the TLM103 through an Avalon (with the mics very specific proximity effect) gives it a crazy good sound! The point of having nice hardware is to limit the amount of work needed in the box when mixing vocals especially. If you haven't used any of them before, it'd be hard to make a valid opinion.@@22rapper
The Avalon has clarity that is useful & popular but the 1073 instantly is recognisable to the world standard for vocal presence & depth.. it’s simply the Standard.
They both sound great. The Avalon doesn't bring enough brightness enough but the way it reacts to high end makes it so easy to boost later. The 73 sounds way more characteristics but also brings up a lot of unwanted sounds depending on the signal being fed
I have both and depending on the type of song I’m singing is where I make my choice . Sometimes I prefer one over the other after I listen to how my voice sounds and works best. They are BOTH absolutely amazing !!!
They’re both just as good. It all depends on who’s performing AND MOST IMPORTANT the microphone you’re recording with. You could watch reviews all day all night but the microphone has to pair with your hardware. Ketchup for hot dogs, bbq for nuggets.
when i saw the title of this video i thought you gotta be kidding me. but props to this guy for calling out how hated the 737 is.i have one for decoration in my studio and to tell which engineers coming in actually know what theyre doing!
1073 for rap and rock vocals Avalon for smooth singing vocals. Pair 1073 with 76 styled compressor for edgy rock vocals, pair 1073 or Avalon with optical styled compressor for rap or r&b or pop. I have both!
Same but I use a U67 for additional tube and transformer warmth. People that say they “Can’t stand” the VT737, clearly do not know how to use it properly. If it sucks so bad, why would they make a plug-in version of it? 😂
People like the Avalon Pre… sounds “expensive”; they mostly criticize the finicky Compressor and high price. It’s absolutely right at home next to my BAE 1073 which sounds thicker and less “modern”
If you’re using the same settings on both, I would pick the neve for a crisper sound to make my vocals stick out in the mix….I think I’d use the Avalon for singers for some reason. The Avalon seems like it fits that vibe.
The transformer in the Neve adds a little more weight to the vocal. Both sound good. By the way, I like your Focal Trio 6's in the background. I love mine too.
lol that’s great and I have both but never done that. I thought combining two mic pre would be over kill and or distort or simply too much. You just put line out of never to line out of Avalon and that’s it? What’s settings works best for you?
I used both and the 1073 is boomy a little but that's what you want for big sound. Still tho, the Avalon got that Jay-Z "New York" with Alicia Keys flavor. It's more like a radio song sound. The 1073 is more albumish. So in my opinion, the more crispy the less-boring (exciting) the more albumish is a little boring to listen to but of course it's all in the mixing game anyway.
The Neve 1073 is better but me personally. I would use them together. The Avalon was nice and warm while the Neve was more bright but together I believe your vocals would sound perfect
I love the texture of the vocal fry I get with the 1073. It’s so obvious and such a 1073 sound. I changed setup slightly though, upgraded the entire vocal chain
I'm learning I like capacitor based pres and mics better than tube or transformer pres. not that a capacitor based pre doesn't have a transformer for power purposes, but there definitely cleaner than tube and transformer designs I don't like the grit. With that being said I like the Avalon you just have it set bland and pushing the tube.
Hey Brothers ... Think first what you want to do ... Everyone wants a different sound for different songs with different voices and with different instruments, in a different kind of music ... just think before you decide. There is no good and bad, it suits me or not.
The Avalon is legendary…
It really is…
To this generation of young cats... The neve is multigenerational
Exactly people only hate on it for the price I bet 😂 literally the best preamp just gives the best sound even on an $100 mic
Naaa neve all day u must be a avalon 🥜 rider 😂
They both sound professional! But the neve has that aggressive bite to it that makes it stand out in the mix more!
Most likely the transients that you're hearing cutting through the mix
1073 all day man… that crispy high end it’s unbeatable
It definitely has that x factor. When I first switched to the 1073 I heard it immediately
I like the warmth of the Avalon. Neve has the brightness
True! Good observation!

True! and that's what I've gotten out of it. It's pretty good with a U87@@apbtbulldogs8826
Avalon sounds so warmth which = pleasing to the ear
The harmonics in the high mid on the 1073 is so lush, I’ll always rock with that!!!
I can’t choose but I’m glad you have them both to work with. You have an amazing collection of analog gear !!!!
The Avalon has clarity that is useful & popular but the 1073 instantly is recognisable to the world standard for vocal presence & depth.. it’s simply the Standard.
Yep you hear it immediately for sure! 👍
The standard by who? You?
great singing!
Thank you I appreciate that! They've been cooking me over here about it! lol!
Avalon paired with the Neumann U87 for the win!
Absolutely! If I’m not mistaken, I believe JAY Z records through the 87 into an Avalon, still.
Yep! I have it that way too..
@@RedLuxeStudioshe uses a 251
i use them both togteher when tracking, and you only need a lil from both and it sounds perfect before u even mix it
Very true! I use the 1073 Preamp and Avalon an my insert. More than enough…
They both sound great. The Avalon doesn't bring enough brightness enough but the way it reacts to high end makes it so easy to boost later. The 73 sounds way more characteristics but also brings up a lot of unwanted sounds depending on the signal being fed
I once interned at a studio and have used and seen the Avalon in use firsthand many times. I never heard much "mojo" out of it
I have both and depending on the type of song I’m singing is where I make my choice . Sometimes I prefer one over the other after I listen to how my voice sounds and works best. They are BOTH absolutely amazing !!!
I just chain both and carry on lol
I have BOTH as well and LOVE THEM BOTH as well !!!
They’re both just as good. It all depends on who’s performing AND MOST IMPORTANT the microphone you’re recording with. You could watch reviews all day all night but the microphone has to pair with your hardware. Ketchup for hot dogs, bbq for nuggets.
When did the Avalon become the most hated?
Most hated perhaps is an overstatement but from Experience folk love it but hate it cause of the noise floor and just bitch about it
That Avalon sound is something special
Both sound good
I have both but I find myself going with the Avalon a bit more on male vocals but hte Neve is butter and so great as well!
The avalon i love it specially for vocals with a lot of sss or shh sounds since it’s warmer it reduces those harsh frequencies
Different flavors. Both taste good.
BOTH ARE GREAT. ID SAY DEPENDS WHICH MIC YOU HAVE
when i saw the title of this video i thought you gotta be kidding me. but props to this guy for calling out how hated the 737 is.i have one for decoration in my studio and to tell which engineers coming in actually know what theyre doing!
They both are great and can have the same tone when dialed in!!! It becomes about preference from this point!!! I like both of them!!!
Both good depends on what style u are doing
Neve 1073 sounds more like my kinda thing, eventhough i was looking more towards the Avalon
1073 for rap and rock vocals Avalon for smooth singing vocals. Pair 1073 with 76 styled compressor for edgy rock vocals, pair 1073 or Avalon with optical styled compressor for rap or r&b or pop. I have both!
transients of neve 🔥🔥 adds so much punch to the vocals 🥰
the avalon can sound the same as the 1073 if you tweak the eq and compressor.. I Realy like the avalon 737. I use it with the u87ai
No it can't
Same but I use a U67 for additional tube and transformer warmth. People that say they “Can’t stand” the VT737, clearly do not know how to use it properly. If it sucks so bad, why would they make a plug-in version of it? 😂
737 with the Mike Dean preset 🔥
I believe in the NEVE!🎉
Prefer the Neve. It got that Crisp i LIKE
Yeah it does honestly 😊
my favorite compressor out of these 2 is the mixing engineer.
How about that 😊!!!!
Hahaaa I like this!!!
The 1073 does not have a compressor.
Lol
Are these just defaults settings on the neve???
That 1073 is smoking. The Avy is dope too. But the 1073 got it!
Avalon has the tube warmth and the 1073 has that creamy low end and high end depth. I like the 1073 better but both are great for different things
People like the Avalon Pre… sounds “expensive”; they mostly criticize the finicky Compressor and high price.
It’s absolutely right at home next to my BAE 1073 which sounds thicker and less “modern”
I'm getting the BAE 1073 soon!! How do you like it?
If you’re using the same settings on both, I would pick the neve for a crisper sound to make my vocals stick out in the mix….I think I’d use the Avalon for singers for some reason. The Avalon seems like it fits that vibe.
Man if some how i could have the full body and warmth of the Avalon with the brightness of the Neve it would be Perfect!
They are used in conjunction sometimes
Thanks brody
Neve got it done! You sounded dry on the Avalon- but the Neve sounded more polished (even though it was also ‘dry’).
1073 is great for voice, I like the 737 for horns becasue you get more warmth and horns dont need more crispiness.
Neve 1073 🔥🔥🔥
They both sound good I also have both
I liked more the Neve. But i thing you need a RND Shelford 😁
Neve all day and night. 737 looks better than it sounds.
I also like my SSL and the Tube tech...
The transformer in the Neve adds a little more weight to the vocal. Both sound good. By the way, I like your Focal Trio 6's in the background. I love mine too.
Which microphone did you use for these recordings?
se electronics z5600a ii 👍
On phone speaker....damn mear what-for-what.
I like the way the neve perked up your voice a bit
Awe man… give us the raw audio withOUT the tuning! You can sing bro, doesn’t have to be perfect
Gotta give it to the Neve
Isolated tracks are almost completely useless to judge by. You have to listen to things in a mix.
Neve all day, it jus felt whole.
1073 has a slightly dirtier color, but I like that!
Neve 1073 is the top dog like it or not?❤
Depends what your going for
Need both, Neve into the Avalon’s line in
Yes!! How I have it! 😄 Best of both worlds
lol that’s great and I have both but never done that. I thought combining two mic pre would be over kill and or distort or simply too much. You just put line out of never to line out of Avalon and that’s it? What’s settings works best for you?
Yep, best combo ever
I love neve 1073 ❤
Isn't the tube preamp supposed to sound better than the solid state?
Neve!!!!!! Sparkling!!!!
O stereo do neve é lindo, e no Avalon a voz ja vem pronta
I used both and the 1073 is boomy a little but that's what you want for big sound. Still tho, the Avalon got that Jay-Z "New York" with Alicia Keys flavor. It's more like a radio song sound. The 1073 is more albumish. So in my opinion, the more crispy the less-boring (exciting) the more albumish is a little boring to listen to but of course it's all in the mixing game anyway.
Avalon for sure
if you need more body and punch the avalon can do the job, if you want crisp smooth highs the 73 is a no brainer
I agree!☝🏾
737 separates. Stands out. Boast. Whatever🎉 you wanna call it! Imitated but never replicated
Neve is “tha thing”
I love the Avalon, but compared to 1073 ... tuff one, but the 1073 is warmer n crisp.
im going with neve ♥
The Avalon is the most hated... Not anymore. It's the most loved again. The way the top end cuts through the mix so lovely can't be matched (easily).
Neve 1073 All Day
I like the color better on the 73
NEVE!!
I like the avalon
The Neve 1073 is better but me personally. I would use them together. The Avalon was nice and warm while the Neve was more bright but together I believe your vocals would sound perfect
Neve 1073 all day
So eq cuts into Avalon into Neve
Or eq cuts into Neve into Avalon
Who hates the Avalon?? I love both 😊
The 1073 without the EQ engaged but the Avalon is better when the EQ is engaged
Your 'S' sound with the 1073 is the one. I'd pick the 1073 for YOUR voice with THIS mic.
I love the texture of the vocal fry I get with the 1073. It’s so obvious and such a 1073 sound. I changed setup slightly though, upgraded the entire vocal chain
1073. The Avalon almost has a crunch
Avalon sounds like John Legend
Interesting
Neve all day!
Great point 👍
avalon isnt most hated lol. it defined a sound for hip hop and r&b for 30 years.
The Avalon is your true voice
I can hear more breaths on the 1073 then the Avalon I like both and would swap them out for certain parts of the song
Neve sounds like it has more depth
NEVE
Even though the Avalon got tubes in it the neve transformer still sound more round and fat but both are high end…
too much boom in the lower freqs on Avalon. 1073 sounds even. almost radio ready
Neve
And then is a guy like me who cheat and use my 737 and the 1073 plugin 🔊🤦🏾♂️👀
Hey Brothers ... Think first what you want to do ... Everyone wants a different sound for different songs with different voices and with different instruments, in a different kind of music ... just think before you decide. There is no good and bad, it suits me or not.
Both very different
Damn bro tho
I like the Avalon m5 better than the 737
IKR..which mic goes best with this pre..?I got tlm 102..
Neve has some distortion, Avalon won, it sounds more clear
The Neve wins: the vocal is more realistic sounding.
