I'm really liking this guys vids! His honesty is refreshing! He could be using his RUclips channel to big up the role of the mastering engineer, blow his own trumpet and make the amateur feel small etc to push his craft! In fact he does the opposite and gives to the point advice, no bullshit inside info and point of view on all aspects of mixing and mastering as a professional. I learn something from every video. There's no ego or arrogance involved and I feel like he genuinely wants everybody to achieve their goals!!
Nice to have the cat's meow of limiters like you do. I think this methodology makes good sense. I think using a few limiters in series judicially achieving the overall goal in continuously decisive steps is great. Thanks for sharing...
Hasn't the trend for louder than louder actually receded quite a bit in recent years? I work the other way, loudness-wise, going softer, like the old-timers did, concentrating on EQ and taking it easy on ordinary compressors, even, not to mention those limiters. Too many people go far too loud, as if they all want to do commercials instead of music. I hope more people will be easy on the limiters in the future. It's so easy to hit the switch on a cheap DAW limiter plug-in when their ears are already tired after a few hours of work, but many people ruin the music. Not to mention all the bad "remastered" reissues during the last ten years.
things don't need to be super loud. Dynamics are FAR more important in recorded music. It's been proven that hyper compressed songs sound smaller and quieter on radio PLUS they are far more fatiguing on the ear and that is the major reason people are consuming less music these days.
Jim Williams Things DO need to be super loud....A song needs to have a reduced dynamic range to be heard over loud sounds and talking in the background at a shopping mall, to be heard at loud outdoor events and parties, to avoid cutting out on the radio, etc. Dynamic changes can be a great way to transition between different parts of a song form every 30 seconds or so, But when a song is consistently dynamic every second, it tends to sound unprofessional, sloppy and limp.
Absolutely not. A reduced dynamic range is required - yes of course. But that's where it ends. - "To avoid cutting out on the radio" ?? No such thing. Radio compresses everything anyway - and iTunes radio, RUclips, Spotify et al all use loudness normalization now - NOT peak normalization. It has been proven that a track with a high crest factor and dynamics actually sounds louder than a hyper smashed track on all of those mediums. Bob Katz will set you straight on that. We're talking about dynamics that allow a song to breathe, microdynamics, macrodynamics and punch. That is NOT the definition of super loud. Super loud = unprofessional, lacking impact, ear fatiguing and cheap.
I guess you have a point.. However the new harder edm that is coming out now is super loud and doesn't give me ear fatigue or anything. I believe that you can make stuff super loud and still maintain the soul of the original material.
Limiters = plural, Limiter’s - something that applies or belongs to the Limiter, for ex: it was the Limiter’s job to limit the signal, but the Limiter wasn’t aware of the wrong punctuation. 😉
Hello Streaky! Does that mean that If the AD is calibrated at -18 dbfs and your ITB mix peaks at -6 dbfs you will have to trim the output level coming from the audio interface before hitting the AD? If that is correct, does it mean that you place a Hardware Liniter post AD or …where do you put the limiter in the external chain to get to the right loudness? Thank you.
Put a 70s-80s-early 90s vinyl on a good player, going through a good amp...Turn the volume up to taste...Now that's loudness. Good loudness. That said, I love 94-95 Oasis hitting red all the time...
Shove 5dB here and another limiter does a 3dB and another and another and you end up with nice mix ironed out to an RMS of 5. You want loud, then buy a better amplifier, speakers or simply turn up the dial.
It´s funny how you are talking about pushing X dB on this or that, not even mentioning what input volume / max peaks the mix has. What if the mixes peaks are at -21 dBFS? Then pushing 5 dB would not do any limiting.
alf3k1 by the time it’s got to the limiters it’s already at 0 ppm I’ve brought the gain up through the chain...then adding level after the a/d converter with digital limiters
Hey streaky this whole loudness thing has just ruined music it is not pleasant to listen to anymore and I think it really is turning a lot of people off but that being said in my opinion the best software limiter that you can get would be the Eventide elevate very very good limiter without artifacts and Distortion even at high levels. try it
Hey there! I really appreciate the content of the video - thank you very much sir! They are very insightful on how a mastering engineer works and thinks, as well as what tools he is using. However, one thing I try to wrap my head around: How come there is so much noise and hiss in a video of a person who earns his money in perfecting sounds? Sorry for the harsh feedback, but I hope it somehow makes sense. Still a thumbs up!
haha it's a fair comment, I'm just trying to get the information out...I'm mastering records not youtube videos...I don't have the time TBH...thanks for watching
My soft mastering chain: Hi-pass filter at 30Hz Logic compressor on "Vintage VCA" setting Channel EQ w/ 4dB Lo-shelf at 500Hz to reduce mud iZotope Ozone 7 for some final spit-and-polish
TrySomeVitaminD this really explains now why I called you an IDIOT, now I know it, u are just a plain simple IDIOT who is looking for some attention here, without any facts or reasons behind confronting people. Just another dumb troll...

Limiter №6 is my absolute favourite. Tried lots of them, liked only few.
Huge thanks for the video Streaky!

Radio ? What is this radio you talk of ?

Luckily that bullshit is finally over, thanks to new streaming standards of -14 to -16 LUFS, FINALLY.

Streaky being pretty pleased with himself there :D
its yay big..
when in punchy mode.. :)

Fer Abra you say a contradiction. You say a nothing
Great vid, been experimenting with Pro L a bit more an liking the results finally.
Do you do this technique by having consecutive limiters going through one another or are there other things in between the signal flow?
John Music they normally go into each other with some prism d-d jitter bits inbetween
Tall, smart and funny as usual. Thanks for the insight!
Thank you Sir Streaky!
Great vid thank you !!
Thanks bro...learned a lot today
Great vid! 👌🏼

Great video.
TDR Limiter 6 honest review?
Or/and DMG Limitless?
Why would you use the L2 hardware over the software, if I may ask?
thank you for this important information and i have question is to arrange the final master fiiters and thank you bro
Is it all gone now?
Great vid. By the way. You should check out new mastering hardware limiter from Bettermaker. They did everyhing to jump out L2!
epromenator nice one thanks I'll give it a listen 👊🏻
good video, btw have you tried BETTERMAKER MASTERING LIMITER ?
No but I will thanks for the tip :)
I use Ozone7 best plug in for mastering 1
Great video
Hey streaky, do you offer special prices for unsigned artist mastering? I've got an album ready for mastering in March. Thanks
OneLoveRecordings email me on streaky@streaky.com and we'll sort something out 👊🏻
Yes sir!
Great tutorial
thanks :)

Subscribed.
background intro song legit sounded like the spyro 3 first level lmao
My soft mastering chain:
Hi-pass filter at 30Hz
Logic compressor on "Vintage VCA" setting
Channel EQ w/ 4dB Lo-shelf at 500Hz to reduce mud
iZotope Ozone 7 for some final spit-and-polish
VoyageOne1 that’s not mastering, that’s dinking around with plugins. Mastering requires a master and a bater. Thanks for trying.
Compression is unnecessary. Just limit.
Limiters not "limiter's".
i thought it was L'Imiters..... :D
@@chrisw7188 That's Italian.
Saturation only! Only oldschool! 😄
Limiters not limiter's. It neither belongs to limiters nor is there an "is" after it.
Jo
haha thats cool man
Earbuds listeners will obviously notice your outboard gear

TrySomeVitaminD you are reported
DUDE get with the times. Streaming services all normalize things now.
haha thanks for the advise
they don't...by default. The user does that. In the case of Spotify.
God damn apostrophe does NOT belong
The fact that your video has extremely bad audio doesn't really underline your competence in the audio area :/
Warsel I know I’m sorry just banged a mic up...soz...hope the info helped
