I've been mastering for about 18 years. It was something that basically fell into my lap and isn't my primary career, but I adore it as a semi-professional hobby. I've never read a book on the subject, met another mastering engineer, or even been in a formal mastering suite (besides my own). What's great about this video is this is almost exactly my process. But, man, was that a hard-won process of trial and error to get where I am today. A lot of error. 😄 One thing I've learned, you can make a good mix great, and a great mix stellar, but you can't make a bad mix good.
....about 'bad' mixes........ It would be good if people just provided raw tracks, no fx, etc., no attempt at 'mixing'. Trying to 'fix a mix' is usually a problem. Then "mastering" becomes part of the proper mix.
me watching this : ah yes yes it is clear yes thank you ah much facts wow amazing also me : *opens ozone and slams the limiter and exports* alright, close enough, okayy
It's hard to keep your eye off fo it, isn't it? Art can be functional and I'd hang that in back of my room any day just for the looks of it. The diffusion is just an added benefit!
really? did you also notice the noisy air conditioner right next to it. thats a real turn it off so i can hear, then turn it on cause I'm boiling kind of situation.
Classical education will give you almost everything, institutes can bring a part of it but will not teach you everything you should know in most occasions. i'm not saying it's bad but be aware of this because i notice this issue in amsterdam which is more about money then education in my opinion
I think what you're referring to is actually music technology -this is a more generalised education course. Audio engineering concerns with specified programming, digital signal processing, circuits, electricity, etc. It's like electrical engineering with a focus on audio signal. Most mastering 'engineers' are not 'audio engineers' but find themselves in these positions due experience working in the studio and usually have an ear for detail.
Wow. I really like this guy's approach and attitude. This was an incredibly helpful resource. It's a great thing that a humble beginner can get the insights of a master masterer. When I was young, only a handful of people in the world had access to this kind of experience wisdom. It's strange to think that the younger generations just take this for granted. I have intense gratitude for people like Joe Lambert who take the time to share their wisdom and passion.
This is awesome! I've had my last two eps mastered by Joe Lambert. I didn't have a chance to attend the sessions because I was living in Austin, TX at the time, so it's really cool to see part of his process!
So true what Joe Lambert says at 1:49 "I just listen to the song and I just try to react". As soon as you react to something in a bad way, that's a red flag for diving into the mix. I use this process every time I mix and master and it has really helped me a lot. // FLX
Hi, I'm just starting out as a Producer. What does that red flag for diving into the mix part of your comment reply mean? Is it just an indicator that the mix needs adjusting to make the mastering process more efficient?
To this day, Joe is one of the few mastering engineers I trust with my mixes. For good reason…..he always discovers my intent, and honors it. He’s the understated master of mastering.
I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THIS INFO AND NOT ONLY DOES IT INSPIRE TO WORK HARD BUT MAKES ME REALIZE IT'S ACHIEVABLE TO MASTER A TRACK AND ACTUALLY YIELD RESULTS
wow. that man's voice is out of this world. we can certainly hear the Radiohead influence in his style, but I dare say, his voice is even more beautiful.
12:00 sibilance is the bane of my existance. my high school english teacher used to have the hardest most crisp 'S's. I just wanted to bring my entire rig to school and de-ess her voice live into my headphones. lol
This track is a classic example of why M/S is such a valuable tool. Within the 1st minute he's monkeying around with global HPFs, etc. A filter at 120Hz on the SIDE of the mix would've open it up appreciably without messing with the relationship of voice to instrumentation.
wow, ok. Not sure how I stumbled upon this (probably just the Tutorial Vortex we all end up in so often), but what a refreshing approach. I am subscribed and looking forward to more!
HAHA, I like the term turotial vortex!! :-) Thatz exactly what happens sometimes. You open a tab, then another, and another and time stops but then it's past midnight :-D
Joe, this video inspired me in a way that not many or maybe even no other mixing and/or mastering video has done so far. I would love to see what you can make my mixes sound like.
Excellent class! So many mastering engineer teachers speak forever about the esthetics of mastering, and make us fall asleep, instead of just mastering a song before the students. You do it. And with explanations about everything you do. Now this is teaching mastering. Thank you!
Great job man, as a pro musician and live sound mixer for 20+ years I like your approach, despite the huge leaps in technology it still comes down your instinctive gut reaction to the overall sound in your environment at that moment. As for the 55 retards who didn't like this video it's usually because they have tunnel vision (hearing) didn't like the level or tone of their particular instrument because they can't listen to the whole mix as a complete composition.
Just listened to before and after and I realize there are commercial pressures to make the song loud right away, but I think a gradualRaising of compression and loudness for at least 30 seconds to make some dynamic contrast which is lacking in most pop music today might be interesting and more emotionally involved
Just stumbled upon this channel, I make music as a hobby, and I'm interested in mixing and mastering (as a hobby for my own stuff). I really enjoyed this video. I have subscribed to Ur channel. I can't wait to see what else is available to watch..👍
Thanks for all your wonderful tips! My question is, in this new digital era with everyone listening to their music by streaming on the computer speakers, earbuds, cell phones speakers how do we mix and master our music? The computer and cell phone speakers sound bad and bright and some of the cheaper earbuds as well. Does the listener expect our songs to sound good on these devices. What point of reference do we go by to get the right compromising mix? Thanks for your time. Take care! Billy
bro. please help! i have fl studio and there seems to be a problem with the sound. i have conected my speakers proberly. it goes threw my focusrite. in fl studio when i turn anything to the left i cant hear nothing on the speakers, but when i turn it to the middle or in center i can hear in both speakers. what can the problems be`sorry my bad english man
What’s he’s actually doing is very interesting. My question is if I hear it on a resource such as a vinyl record or compact disc and in turn hear it live, I hear 2 different things? You have the ability to change what is real into something “fake”. What’s done in a electronic lab can’t be recreated in a live performance? And finally, did the artist approve your mastering?
That track sounds just like it was done by Radiohead. Especially the guys voice. It was so close to Thom Yorke's voice.
Julian West exactly what I was thinking!
Sheaah, so totally Radiohead! One of my favs.

Thanks for taking time to make this video and clarifying the different processes used in professional mastering...
I have watched this video 3 times already. This is the best mastering video on youtube!!! Thank you

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I spit my coffee. I needed that.

That diffuser is a thing of beauty
definitely!
It's hard to keep your eye off fo it, isn't it? Art can be functional and I'd hang that in back of my room any day just for the looks of it. The diffusion is just an added benefit!
It reminds me of The Borg from Star Trek lol. Looks way better than skyline diffusors. Wonder if this is ‘better’ or works in a different way.
What are those cool looking knobs ?
really? did you also notice the noisy air conditioner right next to it. thats a real turn it off so i can hear, then turn it on cause I'm boiling kind of situation.
This video made me wish that audio engineering was a general education course instead of chemistry.
Classical education will give you almost everything, institutes can bring a part of it but will not teach you everything you should know in most occasions.

The Heartfelt Kid instead of chemistry? Why not both, that’s just ignorant. Chemistry cures diseases, it could be the solution to cancer.

Joe is the best, and we had a blast mastering our two albums (so far) with him! Great video!
How much does he charge?
This is awesome! I've had my last two eps mastered by Joe Lambert. I didn't have a chance to attend the sessions because I was living in Austin, TX at the time, so it's really cool to see part of his process!
Joe is a master. He did such a great job mastering my last record. I highly recommend him. What a treat to watch him step through his process!
i'm still obsessed with your song "Tomorrow Never Knows on the 45"
Wow.
Can you please share his email.I would really like to work with him.

This is the Delightful Mastering video on RUclips. Well-defined tutorial that explained well.

Seriously cool talk through what is most often a mystery- Mastering. Really great work you are doing for the music world. Thank you. Respect.
That got emotional in the end.
This guy speaks the truth.
This man knows what he is talking about. Interesting to listen.
Great job! Much clearer and Warm. You're very good at what you do. Great mentor. Open ears are here to learn
This was really dope. I like how he explains everything I always wondered how mastering engineers work.
Yes, I am very happy too with my masters at Joe Lambert Mastering:)

perfect example of really good mastering! removing that 3db bass on the sontec made it feel 10 times more like a record

BIG knobs... I’m so jealous !!! Lol
Thanks for a great job.
Really digging tbe tutorial and the song
Thanks Joe that was very insightful🙂
Thank you!!
Great Video. Still trying to comprehend which levels to use and where to keep them....LUFS, RMS, -14,-18 etc.
christlovemins it depends on the type of song for rock is like -12 to -8 RMS for hip-hop is like -10 to -6 RMS...
