  • This week was rough! I experimented with weird yarn, and the results . . . weren't what I was hoping for! 😂. I also tried to knit a cool ribbed sock, which you might like?

Try that weird yarn with a stitch pattern to change up the micro stripes, or add in stripes from another color. You might like how that turns out.

Art really is subjective. I'm an indie yarn dyer, I don't have a website, I just sell at festivals and such and it's interesting to see a colorway that I just love takes forever to sell but a colorway that I thought was a failure sells out super fast. And, honestly, some yarn does look better in the skein on a shelf than it does knit up.

So fun to see Emma's Yarn "in the wild" my LYS is owned by Emma's parents and naturally we have a ton of Emma's Yarn in the store so in my head it's just a local yarn lol. I knit with microstripes for the first time and I really enjoy them! What I love about the knitting community is that we're connected in our love of knitting but each one of us has a different silt and interests, the diversity makes endless possibilities in patterns and yarns.

I think the Emma's Yarn Lucky Charm colorway would work for an assigned pooling technique, where you do a special stitch when you get to the rainbow. I've seen some very cool shawls and sweaters using assigned pooling but never socks.

I think the microstriped yarn could be wonderful with large blocks of color in the cuff, heel, and toe. But like all yarn and colors, dye techniques, seeing how it will knit up is so helpful when shopping. That why I gravitate towards dyers that will offer a knit swatch because I shop with a project in mind. Also skating boarding! Please share more about your skate boarding!

Ok, it’s at 9:00 and I have ideas for still being able to use this yarn for socks! Cuff/toes on a solid color that matches one of this micro strip colors or alternate your favorite stripe sequence using colors in the micro stripes with this yarn sandwiched between those solid stripes.

Slipped stitch patterns or slipped stitch colorwork is good for those weird skeins because it breaks up the tendency for the colors to pool strangely. I love the chaos of those weird skeins and not knowing what you're going to get! Try the Trompe le Monde pattern from your new book with a weird skein and a contrasting solid color!

I think so too. It looks to me like it may have been dyed with assigned pooling in mind. My LYS owner makes a lot of assigned pooling yarn. The sock weight works well for shawl patterns that are written for the yarns dyed that way.

You are a very good communicator and even I followed along on this one. I like that yarn you call weird. I cannot knit cuff down anymore even though I was taught this way as a child. I started knitting taat toe up and now is the only way for me. I can check the fit all along the way to get the proper fit and there’s no concern with the cast off toe. If you are afraid of running out of yarn you can make the cuff shorter and cast off anytime. Too many pluses for me to do it any other way.

Dawn Baker has some great instructional videos and patterns . My little scarf has been useful on cooler days inside a jacket or to use in the summer when in restaurants and walk on the beach after dinner. Love to watch the show from Down Under. Joh

Thank you for sharing that it's ok to not knit the 2nd sock. I didn't knit the 2nd sock on a pair I had started b/c my tension was all over the place and the 2nd skein was so weird(self patterning) that even making shorties I couldn't match them🙄 On the sock I'm knitting now, I realized I'm an anxious knitter and getting 10sts/in they're not big enough. You are so authentic about your approach to failures! I too love the process part but am not nearly as forgiving of myself when I don’t like the end result - what we picture and what we end up with can be very different. I’ve learned to listen to the little voice that says “this is not going well” and stop. Start something new. And there is always something new, isn’t there! Love your weekly vlog.❤

Love this idea. I’ve got many of those impulse skeins so looking forward to this series. 😃

😮That Emma's Yarn with the rainbow micro stripes is fantastic. Now I want some! 😀
But, I get it. I love hand-dyed sock yarn, but it's more reassuring to buy it when the dyer also shows a little sample swatch, so you know what you're getting into.

Lucky Charm is totally an assigned pooling yarn. 1/4 to 1/3 of the skein is the pop and the rest is a “background”. Definitely a specialty Indy dye technique.

we all have our loves and dislikes, and that’s allowed :). i have a black yarn with little colored stripes, just like the white yarn that you used for the first sock. having looked at your patterns, it seems that you prefer when you make the design, as opposed to when the dyer makes the design. that’s why you’re a designer! and a talented one at that. ps - your home is just beautiful!

LOL. Micro Stripes. I hate them as well. I gifted a $400.00 sweater to my sister because after knitting it and never wearing it I gave it to someone who loved it.

Personally I LOVE the micro stripes! But I totally get having a yarn dying preference.
I have been knitting from your book so much! Thank you for highlighting the 2x1 rib cuff, it’s my new fav!

Love your honesty! Perhaps you should auction all your odd “fails” or take them to the thrift store. Lots of folk find great pleasure in wearing odd socks! Linda, UK 💕🧶🧦

I love that sock! And love how your husband winds your yarn. He did a good job! I love your videos and look forward to watching! And yes, I agree I would take your first sock and make the second…
