In episode 186 of The Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr. filmed on January 6, 1970, Bishop Sheen clearly mentions Pope Francis and Buckley does not catch it. During minute 37 of this episode Bishop Sheen says, "Being related to the world, I think it (the Catholic Church) has become much more compassionate of sinners and I would say perhaps that is the spirit that has changed us from the rigidity of excommunication to the patient bearing of Pope Francis."
As you may know Pope Paul VI was pope in 1970 when this episode of Firing Line was aired. Also our current Pope Francis is the first to ever call himself Francis. Someday if another pope wanted to call himself Francis that future pope would be called Pope Francis II. So how do you explain this , when in 1970, 54 years ago, a man as smart as Bishop Sheen refers to Pope Francis?
I think Bishop Sheen had a mystical experience and he was made to know the future. Our current Pope Francis can certainly be described as a man with "patient bearing." Our current pope is patient, loving, accepting and willing to walk with others.
Buckley's question was about excommunication, he wanted to know why people (of 1970) who claim to be Catholic but clearly live a life in contradiction to a Catholic lifestyle are not excommunicated. This clip was part of Bishop Sheen's answer.
I think Bishop Sheen inadvertently let slip information that he received in a mystical/prayer experience. Why do I say this?
1. Everyone knows he was a brilliant scholar. Sheen was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century. He could not make a mistake like that especially because at the time this was spoken, there had never been a Pope Francis in all of history. Our Pope Francis is the first!
2. Mystics are known to have visions. Not all mystics are known or want to be known. Saints and mystics are known throughout history to have visions of the future and be privy to information that others do not have. In 2002, Bishop Sheen's cause for canonization was opened and a miracle has been attributed to him.
3. With God all things are possible.
He says "to the patient bearing of offences" not "Pope Francis"

And when you sweep aside the false narratives in the media even the, "catholic media" about what Pope Francis says that's exactly what he has been doing but every statement & publication is distorted and the corrections & complaints from the Vatican are ignored . It's difficult to find criticism from within the Church itself that isn't against a phony version from the media or indeed generated by schismatic - "more Catholic than the magisterium , the Pope and Christ's promises of the guidance through them"- groups and individuals whose egos grant themselves primacy.

The Venerable Fulton Sheen absolutely DOES NOT predict Pope Francis. He says toward the end of the video, “from the rigidity of excommunication to the patient bearing of offenses” and NOT “to the patient bearing of Pope Frances.” Replay it and you’ll hear it clearly. You may want to consider changing the title of your video…

Obviously he (Sheen) can no longer answer / defend this himself. But if you read and know more about his life and works, you will find that he was a great evangeliser and wanted to bring the Gospel to everyone. And that was the "optimism" of the vision of V2 - the "renewal" was meant to be a new "springtime", a sweeping away of the cobwebs.
However, like the darnel sown among wheat in the gospels, so the devil comes along and sows poison. The *actual* wordings of V2 did not talk about drastic changes, dilution and dumbing down the faith, and much less the destruction of the liturgy. But somewhere along the line, all that came in. As Pope Benedict XVI said, there was Vatican II, and a "spirit" of Vatican II that further "interpreted" and implemented all sorts of stuff - from a watered down Mass to pop music to "who am I to judge" to effeminate gays in seminary. I don't think Bsp Sheen could have seen any of that. He was going by the actual wording of the texts of V2.
This is how false narratives start. It’s clear he’s saying “ offenses”. We have enough problems with our own people creating lies on the internet without adding to it.

My bother asked me why Buckley didn't pick up on it and I didn't pay enough attention to that. I dismissed him by saying that Buckley missed it. I consider Sheen, although a flawed individual like the rest of us, capable of having mystical experiences. I have read many of Sheen's books. His autobiography TREASURES IN CLAY is, for me a great read. Anyway, I thought Sheen had a mystical experience and was given a gift to see into the future and he had anticipated Pope Francis and let it slip during the interview. I do believe that individuals such as Padre Pio and St. Faustina have been given the ability to glimpse the future. I thought perhaps Sheen had been given this gift but he never shared it with someone. There are people in this world who experience God in supernatural ways and nobody ever knows it. Like the frugal person who dies and leaves millions to some charity, not all spiritual people reveal their encounters with god. They live lives of silent mysticism.

I feel no shame in this because I know the reality of the situation. I never meant to mislead anyone. My intent was not to get clicks. I was hoping for a discussion about Sheen. The primary purpose of The catholic Catholic RUclips station is to make people who may not know the message of Divine Mercy aware of it.

Instead of publicly bashing Pope Francis we should perhaps pray for him and our Church. Another thread in the conversation was about the Orthodox Church. Our Orthodox brothers and sisters are brothers and sisters in Christ. Trying to win an argument about churches and who is right and who is wrong I think misses the point. We should unite in prayer and service to Jesus Christ. The world needs Christ and instead of arguing with each other, we should spend our talents, energies and time, doing good for others and praying for others. Let' agree to pray for each other. The answer is to love one another. Love the person in front of you. Love the person you are communicating with. Even in the midst of mistakes, God works. He can be found everywhere.

A couple of points: it IS legitimate, AND worthy of cynicism, to question whether or not "clickbait" is applicable, as deception is part of the broader media tactic today. Pragmatism is/can be a virtue, and one can't be too careful in exploring truth. I've no doubt that many ARE praying for Bergoglio, as that is our Catholic duty. However, it does NOT mean we have to follow his world view course, unless it be a statement of infallibility. Christ said, and He IS infallible, to apply the litmus truth test..."by the fruit of the tree shall ye know them...". One doesn't have to be blind freddy to see the damage and corruption of both morals, and teachings, that were soundly established by greater Church Father's than the present "pope" to know that they are being eroded. Such perversion was foretold via Vatican 2. The undeniable truth then is that Bergoglio, and those who spread the same modernist message, IS a destroyer, allowed by God to punish us for our desertion of Him. Finally, we are a militant church; it is our duty to defend it, in exactly the same way Jesus defended His Fathers' House against the stall holders etc. To NOT do so, is a failure on our part!

Christ handed down His predilection, for His people, through His Apostles, Saints, Martyrs, Scholars, ordinates and eminent Popes, over the centuries.
In connection with vat2, I'll quote but one example of dire warnings by a Pope; Pope St. Pius X, in is his encyclical letter, "Our Apostolic Mandate", of August 25, 1910, when he said that, he detected "a great movement of apostasy being organized in every country, for the establishment of a One World Church, which will have neither dogmas, nor hierarchy . . . under the pretext of freedom and human dignity."
There are many such warnings. The most significant would be Our Lady at La Salette who said, on September 19, 1846, "Rome would lose the Faith and become the seat of the antichrist . . . The Church will be in eclipse."

He also said. "The laity will save the church"
In the book, "Catholic Prophecy", Yves Dupont having studied the writings of many holy personages down the history of the Church comes to the same conclusion, the Church is saved by the faithful laity etc.

Pope Francis is the most "rigid," to use his siilly word, pope in history with his rigid hatred of Catholic doctrine, his denial of immutable truth, and his belief that God is subordinate to His creation as Francis portays him as in the process of learning how to be a good God from HIs own creation. Francis also has no mercy for the victims of sin with his perverse ideas of "evolving" morality.

Interesting that in 1970, Bishop Sheen was talking about a Church that in its newfound patience and kindness, excommunicates fewer people. Meanwhile today's Church is anything but patient and kind, having robbed us of our inheritance, now excommunicating its best priests and most faithful traditional Catholics.
You can be primarily concerned with understanding emotions or understanding the truth. Emotions are supposed to yield to truth not truth to emotions, otherwise we become God and madness ensues. When the church primarily attempted to be "understanding" of worldly emotions it ceased to be primarily understanding of truth or those who were wanting to do so, which is to say God, who is the truth.

If the documents of Vatican II were not riddled with ambiguity, there would be no need for "interpretation". Further, I have read that it was the stated purpose of the authors to purposefully insert ambiguous phrases into the documents knowing later how those phrases would be interpreted. This has been referred to as "weaponized ambiguity". To me the whole undertaking smacks of modernism, as described in "Pascendi Dominici Gregis".

I have heard the same thing since the 1990s.I used to be a big reform of the reform person.There was no real " reform" IMO,just a deconstructing and reconstructing along Protestant friendly lines.Not only was the mass radially changed but also the Divine office and all the sacraments.I cant see the rationale for an institution to jettison its own patrimony like that.Its like rewriting and editing War and Peace to make it more easy to understand and then passing it off as the same novel.

I think we can excuse Bishop Sheen for not having the hindsight we have today. I think if he were resurrected and living today (2024) he would say he was wrong.
But there is one point he could have been corrected on even in 1970. It's the idea that Vatican I didn't have bishops from around the world because the Church did not relate to the world..
If there were international flights of aircraft when Vatican I was taking place, you can be sure you would have seen bishops from Africa, Asia, and so forth.

all due respect to the good archbishop, I think he had idealistic hopes about the council, but I think by the time he died, he saw the writing on the wall of the wolf and sheep’s clothing. The preconciliar church was not a nightmare to be fixed. It did not require a council to make a tiny adjustments. The interviewer is right.
@EasternChristian333 You are the ones who have separated yourself from the Rock which is Peter. And look where it has led you - more divisions, more inconsistencies and more schisms. You cannot even agree on what books constitute Scripture. You are divided doctrinally, Orthodoxy is unable to provide a unified teaching on even contraception or accepting converts from other denominations (rebaptism or just chrismation?).
Where are your historical Patriarchates? Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria are suffering under the thumb of unbelievers - did not God allowed enemies of Israel to rule over them when they were in sin? The Ecumenical Patriarch is a refugee in Greece, and less than 1% of the Orthodox remain in Constantinople.
The new Patriarchates are no better, the Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia is less a Church and more an agent's nest and propaganda mouthpiece of the regime. The historical weaknesses of Orthodoxy and its caesaropapism still tie your hands.
I hope that one day the Church on earth will become one, but this will not happen until the Romans and Greeks realize their mistakes - and there are a lot of them on your side too.
@EasternChristian333 I could take your claim a bit more seriously if I didn't see that the Orthodox websites and Orthodox people I find only misrepresent or misunderstand the Catholic position, especially on those points that allegedly separate us, and seem trained to respond with distrust and even accusations of deceitful intent from Catholics who try to present the view we are actually taught, which is in some cases identical or nearly so to the Orthodox position.

Very misleading title!
When I posted the Sheen video, I honestly thought Bishop Sheen said, "Pope Francis". That was my initial thought when I first listened to the video. I like Mr. Buckley and I enjoy reading Sheen, so I wanted to see this interview. Once I thought I heard "Pope Francis", I encouraged a few others to listen to it. My brother thought it was dubbed. It is not. My sister in law heard Pope Francis probably because I suggested it. My wife also heard Pope Francis, again, it was probably the power of suggestion. My bother asked me why Buckley didn't pick up on it and I didn't pay enough attention to that. I dismissed him by saying that Buckley missed it. I consider Sheen, although a flawed individual like the rest of us, capable of having mystical experiences. I have read many of Sheen's books. His autobiography TREASURES IN CLAY is, for me a great read. Anyway, I thought Sheen had a mystical experience and was given a gift to see into the future and he had anticipated Pope Francis and let it slip during the interview. I do believe that individuals such as Padre Pio and St. Faustina have been given the ability to glimpse the future. I thought perhaps Sheen had been given this gift but he never shared it with someone. There are people in this world who experience God in supernatural ways and nobody ever knows it. Like the frugal person who dies and leaves millions to some charity, not all spiritual people reveal their encounters with god. They live lives of silent mysticism.
Anyway it was an honest mistake.
I left for Ireland at the end of June to volunteer at a Catholic camp in Ireland called Camp Veritas. Then I took the family to Knock, we hiked along St. Declan's Way and up into Donegal. We got back last Friday and only now am I looking at all of this. I am now convinced that Bishop Sheen does say "for offenses" and NOT "Pope Francis" I made an honest mistake and glad you pointed it out to me. I feel no shame in this because I know the reality of the situation. I never meant to mislead anyone. My intent was not to get clicks. I was hoping for a discussion about Sheen. The primary purpose of The catholic Catholic RUclips station is to make people who may not know the message of Divine Mercy aware of it.
