    It takes a horrific death for BART officials to figure out something is wrong. The fact is - BART has been massively dysfunctional for the past 5 to 10 years. Why is BART functioning as a homeless shelter for whackos, peeing on the floor? Why are people smoking cigarettes and/or dangerous drugs on the BART train while we're moving? Why has fare evasion gone on for decades? I was nearly attacked on BART myself - it isn't safe and I avoid BART whenever I can. I ride Amtrak a lot - Amtrak isn't the cesspool that BART is.

    Ridership dropped because we got tired of homeless and mentally ill drug users smoking fentanyl and meth on BART while we commuted to work... so once remote work became a thing we dropped BART in an instant. Make BART safe and actually keep out criminals and drug users and homeless and riders will return--but BART leadership hasn't done anything meaningful to improve safety.

      So what is it? You stopped riding BART because of the homeless? or because of remote work? Sounds like the latter.

      I rode Bart two weeks ago and there was blood spatter from someone shooting up on the seat where i was about to sit down. Crud in every crevice. I'm surprised we don't have more MRSA or Shigella outbreaks from BART.

      Bart already has its own police force and crisis intervention specialists (some people criticized the latter for not being related to running trains). How much can a rail agency do if the society around it is broken?

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B 2 месяца назад +2

      @@AsteaFrosty Well a good first step is to make sure every single person inside those fare gates is an actual paying customer. Now they're working on it now with extra large gates that someone can't causally walk over/through, but this is something that should have happened a LONG time ago. It's not like there's special new technology that did not exist, some bean counters in the organization made the decision that the losses due to people hopping the gates did not warrant the cost to retrofit every station with more "sleezeball proof" gates. And like everything in government the longer you wait the more expensive it'll be. Those gates everywhere then maybe that old Asian lady doesn't get murdered on the platform by a homeless guy.
      Don't get me wrong, yes society is also f**ked, the fact that guy was a repeat offender and was deemed not worthy of incarceration is a society problem. BART can't fix that, but what they can do is make sure everything in their house is good.

    • @kenw.4539
      @kenw.4539 2 месяца назад +2

      @@AsteaFrosty Put in the new tall fargates to keep out the troublemakers who wouldn't get on BART if they had to pay. They all learned in the past few years it was easy to fare evade because the BART board decided it was too hard to enforce. It can be done in like 30 days but because it's the US with our for profit system, it could take five years.

    If only in the 70’s they knew that BART would turn into the leach it is. Not only can they raise fares but they can tax your home. They never lose. BART PD just drives around in their police cars. They should all be in the train and hire service officers to drive the jail transport wagons.

      Truth - BART police are useless. One night about 10:00 p.m., waiting to pick up my child on an arriving train, yes, sitting in a blue disabled parking place near the station exit (and there were at least 40 empty disabled spaces around me), a BART cop pulls up and tells me in no uncertain terms to leave the disabled space. Was this the best use of his time? I don't think so.

    Give it up BART. You’re not going to get more funds to line your bank accounts of the board of directors. You gotta do for yourself and figure it out without raising prices without the monthly begathon of threats of service cuts if you can’t extort us of more money. Work it out by terminating positions that are senseless like the entire board of directors, like station agents who don’t prevent fare evasion anyway, like janitors who make $120k per year.

    BART doesn't clean the train's inside often enough. It always has a filthy homeless stench. Solid plastic or fiberglass seats would be easier to clean and last longer, instead of cushioned seats that need replacing more often when damaged. This type of poor decisions is why BART always needs more funding. They never try to be frugal. They always expect the state to bail them out, or raise fares to cover a shortfall. Safety has never been a serious concern for BART. In 2016, TV news exposed that all surveillance cameras inside BART trains were fake. That problem has only been fully fixed recently, with the purchased new trains that replaced all the old ones. Another issue is BART refusing to install platform edge doors, many years ago. Those type of safety doors would have prevented the shoving murder of that elderly woman. In South Korea those safety doors are mandatory by law.
