    I was inspecting my first house with the realtor before closing, putting little stickers on little things to be repaired or painted. We went up the ladder to look at the attic and light wouldn’t turn on. It was very dark and when I stepped aside to let the realtor go down the ladder I fell through the ceiling into a bedroom below. Turns out we were standing on a very small platform but couldn’t tell in the pitch black. Luckily I was 25 and more durable back then.

    I wonder if it would have been a good idea to have your doors insulated and then hire the company to spec your springs for the weight of the doors. I know the springs can be adjusted but spec'ing the springs for the correct weight then adjusting is usually advised

  • @Lumber_Jack
    @Lumber_Jack 2 года назад

    I have used these openers for years and they are great. I am curious -- did you test the manual lift behavior of the doors by hand before connecting the 8500's to see if the tension was OK? The door should be easy to lift by hand and hold position by itself. If that is all good, you're in the zone and there should be no issues. If the door is hard to lift, or falls by itself, or raises by itself, or doesn't easily pull down from the top, then those are all clues the springs need to be adjusted. Adjustment is not hard, but you have to be extremely careful as the springs store a lot of tension and can really cause damage and injury. So it's smart to call in a pro if you have any doubts or concerns.
    Are the garage walls already insulated with proper vapor barrier? That is not always a given with garages, since very few are conditioned, but if you do plan to add climate control, it's very important to make sure the insulation is setup right so it will not create moisture problems. And putting insulation on the garage doors is super important. On our old house, insulating the garage door made a massive difference in the summer.
    Good luck with the project, I look forward to the next updates!

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  2 года назад

      I did test, and it was difficult to pull down. It was sticky so to speak so I wasn't shocked that it needed new hardware.

  • @thefauxtist4387
    @thefauxtist4387 2 года назад +2

    Maybe I'm missing something, but the only advantage I see is the quietness, but no overhead space savings for the lift? Did I miss something?

    • @yannicali
      @yannicali 2 года назад

      Its a cleaner look and it does give you more clearance if you have a taller car like a truck or suv on a lift such as the magic jack.

    • @thefauxtist4387
      @thefauxtist4387 2 года назад

      @@yannicali How so? The door rails are still in the same place? I could see it would help for the double garage, but not the single garage. Is the lift going in the double side?

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  2 года назад

      Lift on single side. The rails of the door are wider than a car or a lift.

    I’m guessing it’s to late now but for the mini split they make a direct replacement air handler that goes in the ceiling if you want to put it in the middle of the room and not on one wall. If it’s not to late that would help a ton with equal cooling. Looks like you oversized the system which is good but something to consider if there is still time

    Just curious is there a way to open the door manually in case of power failure? I heard that solenoid lock but how would you unlock it and how do you release the motor to open the door?

    • @Lumber_Jack
      @Lumber_Jack 2 года назад +1

      There is a pull string that disconnects the opener from the door jackshaft, so you can use manually if needed. The lock solenoid has a handle you can grab to slide it open/closed manually.

    • @normalguysupercar

      Yup, you can manually unlock the deadbolt, and there's a cable pull to disconnect the door from the drive.

    You work on Ferraris but won't adjust your own garage door spring? It isn't that hard or as dangerous as you make it sound. You just need two rods to tension the spring and a bit of common sense and you can do it. Great job on the opener installation.
