    Wow!! This brings back memories.. When I was growing up, plowing the fields on my Allis Chalmers (sp) was my job after school on our farm in rural Idaho... Those were the days.. 😉 Many, many years ago... We love ya!! God bless!

    I loved the last shot at 5 min. It's the one I remember most. I used to ride the left brake to keep the tractor pulling straight. The mill boards used to get a beautiful mirror finish after a while and the points would wear smooth and slick. There is also a wonderful smell of the freshly turn earth, and birds flock over the area catching earthworms.
    Everything around here has gone no till and you don't see a lot of turning plough action any more. It's all Roundup and Monsanto corn.

    What I love about these old tractors (and machines in general) is watching this you really understand what horse power is. If we had to do the same job by hand it'd be days of back breaking work. Yet that thing makes it look easy and it can do it all day long. Pretty neat when you think about it.
    Take care,
    Jay

    Watched all 3 videos on your H spring service and tractoring and really enjoyed them. Thanks.
    I am fortunate enough to get to maintain and use my 86 year old Father-in-Laws Farmall 140 B and Farmall 230 that he bought new from the IH dealership in the 40's and 50's. Either one of them are older than I am but you can get new parts for them all day long.
    I just finished rebuilding the PTO Mule Pulley system that drives the belly mower on the 140. It had more *gorilla weld metal on it from makeshift repairs than original steel. Fun little project. When I got it all bolted up with a new belt on it and started to do a test mow, I caught my FIL wiping dust from his eyes when he didn't think I was looking.
    *Gorilla Weld = big, strong and ugly

    Great video, Erick. I first learned to plow with a 2 bottom plow just like the one you are using, but hadn't been modified to hydraulics. The tractor was also a Farmall H, but with a wide front end. As I spent most of my early life working and managing dairy farms, I graduated to much bigger and more modern equipment, but have very fond memories of doing just what you showed here. Thanks. Have a blessed weekend.

    Nice, the only thing different that I would do is to start in the middle of the field and have two furrows on each side of the plow area so I don't waste a trip back. meaning I would be plowing in both directions.

    I grew up on a farm that had an "H" as the "utility" tractor. I cut a lot of hay with a sickle mower, harrowed a lot of ground, smoothing the soil in front of the planter (starting at age 10). Planted a lot of oats and alfalfa with a broadcast spreader pulled by an "H". But I never plowed with the "H" as we were using a 6 x 18 bottom plow which is a bit more than an "H" can handle. An "H" has only about 26hp which is less than some garden tractors but I'd like to see any garden tractor pull that 2 bottom plow. And the "road gear" on that thing is really something. Practically kills the engine just trying to get going in that gear.

    I am assuming the hydraulic cylinder brings the plows back up? It was mechanical on our Oliver trailer plows. What a pain in the ass to get them to come back up sometimes, especially if you started turning before they hooked to come up. I must say your dad looks as happy and content as my dad used to being on the tractor and plowing! He absolutely loved it.

    • @TheRealEricO
      @TheRealEricO  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah this is the 44"H" which means hydraulic. You are talking about an old trip type. They can be temperamental. Hey.. rumor has it you are coming to see me on Wednesday?

  • @Chumly409
    @Chumly409 2 года назад

    Grandpa had an M with the close front (row) wheels and an H with the I-beam, spread apart wheels. For many years I thought this front wheel configuration was the difference. Close wheels meant it's an M and front wheels looking like an "H" means it's an H. Nope! Before he passed I was corrected. The M was a 3 bottom row tractor with a PTO and bigger engine and his M was a "Super M" with a 45hp rebuild done. Stuff we need to know about tractors :D
    He loved that H, man. The M was a beast of a work horse and the H was just more versatile to him. Me, I liked the little 50's ford.

    How are those 38" tires holding up? I was sold a set with the lugs as far apart as yours seems to be. They made it two seasons of actual farming use before the lugs started tearing off the carcass of the tire. Not only that, they are about 2 inches shorter in height when stood side by side. It's almost like they are one size smaller than labeled.

      In the earlier video, Eric talked about not plowing very straight. If he is looking back at the plow, but his dad is looking forward and a little to the side, maybe that's how to make things a little straighter. Then look at the furrow on the way back to the starting point to check for problems. Of course, since he had issues with the plow working correctly in the other field, Eric just may be paranoid. :)
