  • Assassin's Creed has gone through a plethora of changes due to fan burnout. Odyssey marks the largest step away from the series norm as it goes full RPG. Lock went back to it. Is it a bloated mess?!

    Game was great. Favorite Assassin's creed. Exploring and combat was fun. The others are so repetitive I get bored except for black flag. Black flag was my 2nd favorite. I've played them all but never was really enjoying it until black flag. The other worldly bosses and naval combat was fun. The cult had actual cool members not just some random guy in the market. I really enjoyed the story. Lost me in valhalla it was a worse version of Odyssey. Spartan kick is still my favorite move. Spent over 100 hours on that damn game. Me and my friends still talk about how fun the naval combat was in odyssey and black flag.

  • @AEwell5858
    @AEwell5858 9 месяцев назад +20

    I still occasionally go back to Odyssey just to spend time in the world. Played all the story and DLC, cleared the map, played conquests till Sparta ran all it could.
    I'm pretty much like that with most open worlds I like the aesthetic of. Mainly that I spend a long time just running around doing whatever. Odyssey was a pretty relaxing way to experience ancient Greece.
    Tho I'll say it definitely was that shift where AC wasn't really about the Assassins throughout anymore. Same with Valhalla. I think it's cool that they wanna lean into the fantastical elements of history and having the Pieces of Eden bring them forth. But its one of those "can't please everyone" sort deals. Do you lean into realism or embrace fantastical elements? Mirage tried to go back to a more realistic (as realistic as AC usually was anyways).
    I'm sure there's a balance somewhere, maybe they'll figure it out.
    Maybe the answer was to create another series entirely, but then it wouldn't sell like AC

Despite having a new game plus option, I just don't have any desire to ever play the game again due to how extremely padded and repetitive the game is, and again how it burned me out. This video is feeding off, and adding to, the weird cult of 'modern AC games are terrible', which I'm fairly sure only exists in social media, and not at all in true gamers, or anyone that's actually played. People who've not played convince themselves recent AC is bad (with nostalgia blindness for AC2), and will then actively have a need to convince others too. Real shame because many who believed those control freaks would've loved Odyssey.

    It all depends on the perspective of the individual players. As someone who’s favorite games in the series are AC1 through AC Revelations, Odyssey isn’t what I want from an AC game. The story and tone of an AC game was always key for me so the change in direction from emphasis on the philosophical and serious themes of those stories to more lighthearted and mythological themes of the beer games was not something that I would like. That doesn’t mean I don’t have fun with it because as a mindless action RPG I was able to put a lot of hours into it so I don’t begrudge people for liking the game. The only thing I can’t truly understand about people who like the game is why people like the DLC which seem just so cheap, bizarre, and truly nonsensical

    • @goatlps
      @goatlps 5 месяцев назад

      "The story and tone of an AC game was always key for me" - that means GTAV and RDR2 are bad too? AC/Odyssey isn't stealth and Animus time travel any more, so it's barely related to the pre AC4. It's still an incredible and hugely detailed game, plus everyone loves the ships and vastly improved parkour, and gameplay in general. I loved the story of AC2, but the clunky broken mechanics made my blood boil - you could fall to your death at any moment LOL.

The only real issue is like all the newer ones so far where when you aren't in a mission or doing something specific the world felt a bit bland and like a painting you could only mostly just stare at and say, " Pretty. " Odyssey was a bit better than origins to me for this bc instead of vast deserts we had oceans and at least there we had ship combat. Valhalla had mini games and fishing etc., but the story that let you do it in whatever order you wanted felt like a bunch of bland mini campaigns that weren't really connected well and no single one stood out as being that different from the previous region.

    I bought Odyssey on a whim while waiting for RDR2 to drop the next month. I didn't expect much but I fell in love with it, putting in well over 100 hours. Unfortunately since then, Open World burnout became a thing, and I don't think I could ever go back to Odyssey. It takes a REALLY special game like Elden Ring for me to bypass that burnout.
    However, I will still always cherish my time spent with Odyssey!

    I like the OG AC games but I just felt they kind of got a little stale after a while. Odyssey and origins are probably my number 2 favorite assassin's creed games. Mainly because I really love the Witcher 3 and they have inspiration from that so to me those 2 are my favorites. Valhalla was just way too bloated It took me a 100 plus hours just to complete the main quest in some side quest.

  • @MrRodrigues520
    @MrRodrigues520 9 месяцев назад +1

    Is one of the less fun one, too much bloat. As much as people complain of Valhalla, you can avoid most of the bloat. In Odyssey you can't, the Mercenaries system is awfully annoying and playing on normal makes every enemy a chore. After lowering enemy level scaling and the difficulty makes way more enjoying, you can stealth one hit kill almost every enemy.

Best map ever in gaming, huge and filled with unique statues and buildings. Great story(s). Might even be a myth itself that it's hated, especially amongst players.

      Valhalla was my favorite of the three. It’s a game that isn’t meant to be played at all at once. I played it over a year and had sooooooo much fun. As a Viking game it’s amazing and the world is gorgeous. It’s not perfect but the updates they added helped as well. I loved the lore and the totally different feeling I got in that one than any other one. And that’s what I like is when each one feels like a different game

    This is where Assassins Creed lost its identity, Ubisoft wanted to copy popular western RPGS and be more RPG driven, this made Odyssey a receptacle of everything popular in the western rpg market but doing so killed the games identity.
    When you become a receptacle of everything, you are nothing.
    I'm over seeing things I grew up enjoying, having a soul and unique identity, get thrown to the way side all because of profits and the need to maximize earnings.

    This game was fun if you ignored the assassin stuff and were there for the adventurer/Greek God power fantasy. Of all the AC games this was the most not AC, I think it could've stood to be a better game and its own series if they just made it an rpg going through different mythos, with its own storyline.

    This game is amazing. It gets way too much hate and its mostly from RUclips from a small minority from my experience. Odyssey is the spartan assassin experience in AC. It focuses on a protagonist 400 years before Bayek and Aya form the Hidden Ones. The game does what it wants and does it really well. If the game had been more like Origins, many people wouldn't complain. The soundtrack, world, protagonist, and the main story were all amazing to me. Stealth kill animations and combat animations were awesome. The game focuses on other aspects of AC lore that never get touched. I personally wish Alexios and Kassandra were both playable. If Alexios had been the older brother that was a mercenary and Kassandra was a protege of Darius, I think it would work. There would have to be a few tweaks to the story but Kassandra with a wrist blade and Alexios with the spear of Leonidas makes perfect sense to me. Alexios can have Ikaros and Kassandra have normal eagle vision. The map for Odyssey was never bloated for me. At least it's map doesn't look as cluttered as Unity. My opinion for any AC game is don't listen to reviews, especially those on RUclips. Every game since Unity will sit a few years before people start accepting that the games are great. I think you perfectly stated what it's like for AC. If you like a specific setting or period, you'll probably like that game more than others.

    Despite how vastly different it was from core AC, Origins is the only of the "new" era ones that I like. Unity was ridiculously disparate, no sense of story progression because you could just jump into any memory anytime and the map was just overwhelming to look at.
    I want a nice clean AC map with the only things with a waypoint being the main quest. Any side content should be unmarked and you have to remember clues in a journal to progress in them. And as you said, back to the emphasis on stealth and finding that perfect route to get behind the next obstacle.
