fun fact. overtightened wheel nuts might SEEM sensible but more wheels fall off because the wheels have been OVERtightened than UNDERtightened. why? the studs (or bolts if so fitted) stretch the threaded area and eventually they SNAP

I appreciate that you show the mistakes too. There is a big trend lately of cutting everything down and it creates such a false reality of car building. You end up having someone trying something and it isn’t like anyone on they saw on tv and RUclips so they feel like they are failing. We all make mistakes and we all keep on learning!

Great job on using the mistake of the rotor thickness as a teachable moment! You and your content are real and vulnerable - both attributes of a great teacher!!
Now for my nitpick. As a former military aircraft maintenance instructor, the use of proper tools is bugging me (why are we using adjustable wrenches?!? 😂). Also the method used for installation of a cotter key is bugging me.
Tool usage is pretty cut and dry - use what's available... and I'm just as guilty of it. Everything is a hammer if we try hard enough, right? 😁
As for cotter key installation, there's two ways that people show how to do it, and only one way we taught our students as the proper way when securing a castle nut. That method takes a few more seconds, but it looks better, is more secure, and is even easier to remove. The cotter key needs to fully insert into the castle nut 'grooves', which requires the cotter key head to be installed parallel with the bolt shank. The longer end of the cotter pin is pulled up over the center of the bolt shank and trimmed to terminate in the middle of the bolt shank. The short end is bent down over the nut and trimmed to stop at the bottom of the of the nut. This is how we were taught for aircraft maintenance, which may be overkill for automotive maintenance.
Safety wire pliers are awesome at pulling cotter keys.
As always, I love the content. Keep up the great work!!

Clint, First, thanks for watching! secondly a sincere thank you for the detailed instruction on cotter ( keys) commonly referred to as "pins" That is going into my personal file-vault of "the right way to do it" I have mad-respect for Military Instructors... my Father-in -law was a Navy Chief & 20 year electronics instructor ( as well as a WW2 veteran) and I learned so much from him over the years... I’m not sure about this truck, but the outer upper ball joint nuts sometimes tend to rub the rubber boot. At least on a few of the vehicles I’ve done. I’ve had to pull the bolts and run them in from the bottom and have the nuts on the top.

Should clock your ball joints before installing the spindles or knuckles so the cotter pins go in parallel to the spindle. Makes a world of difference.

Yup!!! I actually thought about that after setting the spindles.... thanks! I'll definitely remember that on the next one..... ( Garbage Camaro)

I've been doing this as long as you have.... that being said PUT THE ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES IN THE BOTTOM DRAWER WHERE THEY BELONG! Us the correct sized wrench for those nuts so that you don't distort them with a loose wrench. I understand the new rotors and brakes idea, but I would never let a busted stud go either. it's only $2 to fix it and do it right for the next guy. C'mon man, I've looked up to you for many years. Do the job right... you're the one who showed me how.

I kind of thought the same, but It sounded like new brakes will be going on anyway. Which includes new rotors/hubs.

I was thinking the same thing bet he won't wrap sandpaper around it and block out the bed but will use it for that.

Truck sitting in a hoist bay, arms out and under the truck. Kevin sits on the ground to work😂. There’s a Driveway mechanic screaming at you to use the hoist

Interesting video. Learned some great tips. Also, learned what not to do. I was curious why Kevin didn't replace the broken wheel stud before reassembling? Aren't they replaceable on that hub?

It all goes away in a month or so... Derek's doing a big brake package and disc conversion in the rear. It won't see any real street time.

Pretty sure those "gaskets" for the new springs are called isolators or in shade tree terms "no squeaky squeaky pads". Depends on where you're from I reckon 😉

He banged one the bad lug nut on tight, then did the rest without noticing the wheel was not seated. Pulling the other lugs down caused stretch in the first lug nut. I had a shop do that to me. I always double check that the lugs still come off after getting a tire change.

When the wheels show up how about letting us know the complete specs; offset, backspacing, diameter, width etc. Enjoyed the video!
