It is a tough balancing act. Kerala might not be able to make an overnight shift. There will be a transition period between more high wage jobs being created and low wage manufacturing getting shut down. Doing so abruptly will cause long term problems.

Exactly... If there is a manufacturing company then it would be difficult to bring literacy centric jobs as company would try to level it because they can't be seen giving two different wages in same area thus denying any future opportunities
But this had made more difficult when the gulf countries is taking a hit in employment levels because we malayalies usually when there for labour jobs

    1) Kerala has the highest sweat shop economy in India but it's located in the Gulf.
    2) There's a difference between literacy and education. Kerala has the highest literacy but not every literate malayali have the education, degree and skill-set to have IT or white-collar jobs. So manufacturing jobs are important even for Kerala to employ the masses.

Wrong Kerala is not just having high literacy but also has one of the highest percentage of graduates in this country. So Kerala is not just literate its much more educated as well than other states. The problem here is not something which you stated it's more to do of the ideology and laws in kerala which makes it less business friendly and more costly when compared to its neighboring states. Thats why you'd find a malayali in other states living and doing well instead of staying in his state because opportunity is less.

There is a problem with this argument from Bistro.
The cost of having higher human welfare index comes also at the cost of restricting certain exploitative industries or organisations.
The cost of human welfare is completely undermined in this video. What Kerala does in the form of curtailing certain industries or companies that have been exploiting people has also lead to the qualitative improvement in the life of the people. Like as a Malayali, from a very small age, you are instilled with this quota/sense of social fairness and how to always balance that act.
Exploitative industries don't usually thrive here.
If you want to be vocal about the fair wage, talk about states to which Kitex has shifted their operations and how insignificant and cheap the wages and living conditions in these places are.

Kerala government's claim that we are focusing more on IT industry is merely an excuse for the failure to promote other industries. It is true that kerala is environmentally too fragile to promote the manufacturing sector, but the very same government has given approval for close to 200 new rock quarries after the flood of 2018. The government doesn't care about job creation, it wants people the bulk of the population to be pseudo-literate so that it people have just enough education to feel that they know everything while they don't really understand the true nature of things that happen behind the scenes.. The tourism industry that the government is promoting is one of the biggest causes for pollution today in Kerala. Big tourism barons cut down as more and more forest each year.. Coming back to the so called "Promotion of IT industry".. The government doesn't really any kind of incentive to any of the smaller IT companies.. for instance if you go to the Kerala startup mission and ask for support from them, they will say they only support hardware startups and no software ones. You can get a office space there, but then you have to make payment for their incubation.. Similarly there is no state level tax mortarium or any kind of grants from the government for startups. In colleges they have entrepreneurship cells, but none of these cells are of any use to any student when it comes to monetary needs or any kind of financial support. Essentailly the government keeps saying we promote startups but in reality they don't provide any kind of financial support.. however, if you have a strong political hold then the government will back your projects and even grant you money through some schemes that are created just for you.. I have been trying to get my company up and running for the past few months now.. Literally every office I visit I have to pay bribe, I have to pay money to the union workers to let me unload my stuff. I have thought about shifting to Karnataka many times, but I have just put in so much money into this that I cannot hope to relocate at this point. this is true.. Big businessmen like yusufali or ravi pillai can do whatever they want here.. they can make malls in eco-sensitive zones or wet lands.. nobody will bat and eyelid.. people of kerala are so ignorant that they shamelessly worships these people as gods as well.. these people have strong political backing due to their wealth and their influence in other nations. but ordinary people like me, when we try to start a company we are doomed..

Quite disappointed with the investigative journalism carried out here as the narrative presented is already what the public is already aware of. The actual truth is distorted here, this company was a wolf in sheepskins. Yes, definitely their political ambitions rubbed wrong shoulders and turned out to be the catalyst for their own self destruction. Giving employment prima facie may look good but one tends to look into ulterior motives of the corporate giants i.e. negative impacts caused to the society in terms of blatant abuse of laws, serious water pollution, pathetic working conditions, disregard to labour laws and basic human rights, exertion of pressure on opponents was apparent to everyone including politicians who turned a blind eye until they were threatened. Imo, these guys were wolf in sheep skin. It is a shame that we tend to look at world and companies through narrow windows n that’s what precisely the media n the public did here as well. A few candy offerings to rehabilitate few houses in the locality n supermarket for supporters were never a sustainable models in the first place as it always depended on level of influence n favouritism the company received. I would rather take a company like TATAs as a better n true model of CSR done properly. Sorry for being blunt

This is a very good point. But even so the adverse effects on Kerala's economy are of a concern, don't you think?

Yes. We need a balance. But apparently it's hard to do that because if the government becomes firm on favouring citizens, the companies will just move to other countries where they find cheaper labour and boot-licking government just like in this case.

sure, environment laws are thrown in the dustbin
