Great tutorial! Really nice descriptions of the techniques and I really appreciated the clear definition of scumbling; I’m completely new to painting so explanations of the jargon is very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do this. I am going to try it. I need a flowery painting over the bed in my bedroom so I'll be watching for one!
I'm so glad you found this video helpful!🙂 If you want to continue your practice you'll find a great collection of palette knife tutorials on our website here: app.jesserobertson.com/#/results/everything/Palette%20Knife
Hi, I love the way you taught us how to use pallet knife for beginners. I would like to learn how to use pallet knife for a thicker aspect of texture ( like tracks of trucks on a snow), please. I think that it might be the Impasto style. I am not sure if I am right. Thank you very much in advance. Elena P.S. Happy new year to you!
Hi! There is nothing quite as satisfying as painting impasto with a palette knife. And yes, You are correct, thickly applied texture is called Impasto. If you like texture, I think you may really enjoy this tutorial.: ruclips.net/video/DPJKFdB0pL0/видео.html
I’m happy you enjoyed the technique video! I do 2 free classes on Facebook Live every weekend and have 3 full length palette knife classes in February if you’d like to check it out: facebook.com/keepitcolourful
Thank you for a great tutorial. Why, when you first pick up the paint, do you then wipe it off the knife before picking up the colour again to apply to the canvas?
Love the tutorial!! I used palette knives years ago And I'm renewing my interest for abstract art. I'm a analog collage artist, would like to expand my mediums. Is heavy body paint necessary? And also does canvas have to be primed? Thank u
I’m happy your enjoying your knives again. Heavy body paint is very helpful, particularly for the impasto style techniques - it allows for thick, raised textures and can be controlled more easily. You can add modelling paste or heavy gel to softer bodies paints to thick them up 🙂🎨
Hi! I wanted to show a few basic techniques in this video. if you’d like more detailed info on how to use each particular knife and more about ratios of medium to paint for impasto, you might enjoy this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/DPJKFdB0pL0/видео.htmlfeature=shared I have a full length 8 painting “impasto challenge” coming up on my websites watch- free page in May as well - we will be creating landscapes and animals and florals and more all with the knife.
It looks like you are using only one of your palette knives. What about the other ones? Are there not different possibilities with different palette knife shapes? If not, why have so many different palette knives? Thanks
Great question! Each palette knife shape has its own unique effects-some are perfect for broad strokes, while others create fine lines or dabs of texture. This tutorial shows a few basic techniques that can be done with any palette knife. To keep it simple I demonstrate here with my favourite, diamond shaped knives. When using the bottom of the blade of the knife, you will roughly create a mark in the shape of the blade When using the fine edge, you will make incredibly fine lines. And when you load just the tip, you can get perfect dabs If you love using a pallet knife, I have a pallet knife challenge that goes through six in-depth full length, step-by-step pallet knife tutorials, here is a link: app.jesserobertson.com/#/challenge/1431
I’m not sure why you would think a professional painter would need to purposefully paint their hands to look cool? It happens quite naturally, I assure you. Thanks for popping by to watch and comment.
