Charles Barkley Does NOT Like Analytics (or Daryl Morey!)

- Charles Barkley does not like analytics, and he is not afraid to let everybody know just how much he hates them. Charles Barkley clearly does not respect Daryl "Moronic", aka Daryl Morey, who has long been a big part of the analytics push in the NBA. While I think Charles Barkley has some solid points about how analytics are used, I'm still trying to figure out how Barkley came up with the yoga comparison and the cook and chef analogy...

Not true at all
@@swimfan752 Analytics don’t really provide much but promote change or rather explain and show the change that’s currently happening. At the end of the day it’s still stats. I’m pretty sure you could recognize when the league is attempting more threes on the season from season to season. It’s all pretty noticeable. Some categories that are covered are harder to notice tho so it’s not completely bad or useless. Long story short.. numbers only tell you so much at the end of the day so analytics aren’t the entire truth. Numbers don’t lie but they also don’t tell the full story either.

He is right. If it is all about statistics you could have a computer coach a team.
There not saying analytics can cure cancer. its there for a reason.
Nobody say "it is all about statistics"... I mean you need actual play to play the game as a start. However, analytics seems to be very useful in predicting, for instance, what players to sign to maximize your team's performance or what plays should be executed more.
@@bohanxu6125 until someone signs Russell westbrook and realizes analytics can't determine decision making or consistency. "until someone signs Russell westbrook and realizes analytics can't determine decision making or consistency."
I'm pretty sure russell westbrook has horrible "analytics". I mean it's not hard to see he has horrible efficiency....
Also you can see a lot of decision making skill or consistency through analytics... For consistency, you can look at the variance of point per game or variance of efficiency. For decision making, you can look at assist to turnover ratio, or other stuff.... Or you can create a machine learning algorithm that takes in as much game information you want.
It's true that box score tells you very limited things.... However, if you include all the information of a game, possession by possession, then those data can tell you a lot.
Not really. The two biggest droughts in baseball history were broken using analytics. The Cubs in 2016 and the Redsox in 2004.

Most people who "watch" NBA talk about analytics. They never watch the game, and it's sad. When I talk to these people I would say "Giannis played great tonight", then they would say, "well, he was 3 out of 7 beyond the arc"... bruh, the dude had 30 points and murdering people down low when he was bulldozing his way coast to coast. Whatcha mean he can't shoot 3s???
@Mason Hamilton 3 out of 7 is average I guess, analytics want 5 out of 7
@@exxie1 That's not true....
@@noivern1380 honestly, I don't even care if Giannis shoots threes. If he can drop 30 points a game in high percentage, which is what he is capable of and great at, I'm all for it. But analytics will say, nope, three good, best player shoot three, no three mean no good player 🗿
@@noivern1380 you must know, the well-known analytics guys are the ones on ESPN or some other networks. I don't watch them because it drives me crazy. Here's the thing about Analytics - Reminds me of a quote I've had memorized "No plan survives contact with the enemy." Now what do you reckon that means, eh? Analytics or stats are quantitative of the game but they are not qualitative of the game. Math says the game should be played one way but what do your eyes tell you?
That a tough 4th and 1 and I gain 1 yard will lower my average, but could be critical in terms of wins and losses.
Analytics are critical in understanding the game within the game.. Charles don't understand it so he dismisses it
@@mitchelll3879 Analytics is a critical failure at understanding the Game of Basketball. Talent and the way the game is played determines what is best for the player, best for the team. Numbers can give you a projection of what should work, but that's not what happens during a game and from the games I've seen your analytics can take a hike. Charles understands this all too well because he's played at the highest level of the sport.
You can combine both quantitative and qualitative data. That’s multimethod analysis.
@@petitnicollas lol look at this wise guy! That's a brilliant statement without a doubt. Very clever.
It's 2 sides of the same coin. You can't strategize or be successful JUST with analytics and you want to be careful basing decisions just off of the eye-test and conventional basketball wisdom. Analytics are good to find specific areas to take advantage of. To Chuck's point, not every team can be successful just shooting 3's because if all 30 teams follow the same strategy there is no comparative advantage to shooting 3's, it just comes down to talent. The next stage in analytics is going to be who can find comparative advantage in a league dominated by 3's. If teams get worse at defending the paint because they're so used to defending the perimeter, there are going to be more opportunities for layups and dunks. Everything is subject to league rule changes and individual player talent; analytics when used properly can just help you find areas to exploit.
Understanding the nuances of game theory is is key to any successful organization. See game theory mechanics and nash equilibrium for pitchers vs batters in baseball.
Exactly. Its not only about the data, Its about how to interpret and use it in the game to plan strategies.
Which doesn’t do much really, it just tells you some things about a team in the previous game.
In all honestly chuck is completely right. Stats will never tell the whole story of what makes a team great
“They just call it analytics so they can charge you more for them…they just stats”
Speaking straight facts here!
Analytics is for people that ain’t never played the game at a high level and trying to include them in it 🤣

Lmao the Yoga comment 😂😂😂
well, he's right that analytics don't *really* work.. if they did, then sports betting would be low risk/high reward. but it's not; it's high risk/high reward.
Charles Barkley is the best.
Got to stand up for yoga, it's a specific type of stretching that incorporates strength. You could watch someone doing yoga and if you copied them, you'd just be stretching, but if they explained how to do it, you'd feel the difference. When you add in all the spiritual crap it's more of a racket, but the basic moves work. I'd go as far as saying that yoga is the correct way to stretch, and everyone who is just stretching is doing it wrong.
From a players perspective Charles makes all the sense in the world, but from front office perspective analytics are guide for making player decisions.
It’s just a minuscule part of the whole equation. It works for baseball but in any dynamic sport, it tends to fail

Watching Daryl And Chuck argue is like watching 2 blind men trying to find a candle.
Dr. Shaq used "vitriol" as a adjective not a noun like he should have. :/
The formula at 5:01 is GMPTS supposed to be points per game? If it is, Barkley is right. The formula is just comparing a single game to the season’s stats. You don’t need a formula to do that.
I love this guy
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love Chuck but he is sometimes unconsciously giving analytical statements like the importance of rebounds in winning games.
Uhh is this serious?
This is exactly what he means when he says they’re just stats. Rebounding is a basic fundamental of basketball. You don’t need formulas to calculate why a team lost if they didn’t rebound the ball well 🤦♂️
Analytics equals regular season success
“You’re not a great 3 point shooter. Why are you shooting 3s?”
Because 33% from three is equivalent to 50% from two. This isn’t advanced analytics - just basic math. Almost all guards are shooting under 50% from two, so it makes more sense for them to be a “bad” 34% shooter from behind the arc.
Same thing happened in baseball. Hitting under .300 was just automatically considered “bad”. It was an arbitrary line in the sand that had nothing to do with the actual outcome of the game. Turns out that .240 hitter with 37 homers is doing way more to help your team win than the .300 hitter with only 10 homers.
Same thing when players try to slam dunk yet they miss. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very ironic that Barkley is telling ppl to not shoot 3's and he is THE worst 3 shooter of All Time! hahahaha
“So you think Kobe Bryant and Shaq together is not analytical?”
Those words do not make any sense whatsoever. NBA guys who hate analytics are just guys who didn’t pay attention in school
Again like chuck said it’s people like you who never had any talent at the game cling to analytics.
No it's about paying attention on the court. Rebounding, passing, defending, and less turnovers impact winning and losing....... that simple.
Basketball is a simple game. Analytics in basketball is dumb
Chucks right I player prop bet I have league pass watch every game and the NBA is pathetic shooting 3s with no one under the rim with 22 seconds left on the shot clock by a 7'0" is a awful shot

I think we haven’t seen the best basketball player. I know it is crazy but I feel like the basketball cultural is holding back basketball. It is like basketball players care more for clout and respect from Twitter. Probably in the future, they will get a player that only concentrates to be perfection without worrying about the fake ness of social media.
Bro what? There were dominant players before Twitter and there are dominant players now. Not everyone in the league is the same and just in it for clout, some of them don’t need the clout lol
Analytics are for people who do not watch tape

Companies who do basketball stats hire very smart people to optimize winning through data.... they are not "just looking at stats"
Self-driving car uses cameral to capture image, and that image go through a neural network (a program trained by data) to decide what action should a car do.
Basketball analytics uses cameral to capture image... together with other information, go through a neural network to decide what kind of shoot/play a team should do, and what players should a team trade.
