I ride a Honda CMX 500 Rebel, so a competitor in looks and price to the meteor. Oddly enough, I hadn't needed to change any of the stock parts on the bike because they actually function properly from the factory. I just can't get behind Royal Enfield, I get the bikes are on a budget, so they aren't going to be perfect. But having a bike that rides comtably out of the factory, in my opinion, should be standard. This Honda is my first ever bike. After passing my full license, I did a test ride a LOAD of bikes, including the meteor. The meteor, in particular, didn't feel very nice. Its ride was very firm, and the lack of power left me feeling very vulnerable. However, each to their own very informative video and fantastic content as always.
And if you can live with the horrifically uncomfortable riding position on the Rebel for anyone over 5'6", and you don't mind paying 50% more for the bike in the first place, and you don't want a three year warranty, and you don't really want free breakdown cover for three years, and you don't mind if your clutch doesn't last very long (because it's a stacked design).... Then yes, the Honda is a fine choice I guess.
@Trev350 I'm 6ft 1, and the rebel is perfectly comfortable. It's a bobber / cruiser. I've done full days on it without issue. I got a full 3 year warranty from my Honda dealer. The rest you've just made up off the top of your head. Always one Royal Enfield nut who can't see the obvious floors in their motorcycles. the speedometer fogs up on the classic 350 not long after you buy one. @@jamesnoonan7450 not "made anything up off the top of my head". I used to sell Hondas for a living. If you're happy with your choice of first bike that's great. When you've been riding for forty years and owned a lot of bikes, experienced all sorts and styles of machines, then you can reflect on which ones were the most comfortable. As for swapping a few parts to align the bike to an individual's personal preferences, for a huge number of bikers, that's all part of the fun of ownership. The Royal Enfield 350 J Platform bikes have been the biggest selling bikes in the UK in class during recent times and for good reason. Many people buying them have huge experience of riding, going back decades and they are very well regarded. One thing you got spot on.... I am a Royal Enfield nut. But we are all different. We all have different requirements. And we all like different bikes. And that's exactly how it should be. If you didn't like the Meteor, then it's good that you didn't buy one. Personally, I love mine and I also love my Classic 350 ( which doesn't have misted clocks lol)😜
Them shocks with the more equally spaced spring coils , usually make bikes more soft , bouncy & comfortable like a pram . I always used to fit Koni ( now known as Ikon ) shocks back in the day , to replace naff standard ones on Japanese bikes
A clue that the battery is on the way out seems to be when the clock in the main display deos not keep to the correct time. At least that is what happened with my OEM battery after two and a bit years.
Great video. Ive just bought some bar end mirrors from Tec Bike Parts but have to fit them and nervous about doing it as I'm not much of what did you call it, a 'spanner monkey' 😅 May look at the shocks as well now as i have noticed that it can get quite uncomfortable on bumpier roads. Again, great content as always 😁
Thanks I appreciate it, you will be OK. It caught me out having to cut the bolts 10mm off each end, apart from that it's a 10minute job. I'm sure you will be fine. Let me know how you get on 👍🍻
I found the factory shocks on my Hunter too firm even on the softest preload they only used 3/4 of thier travel. (I weigh about 90kg with my gear on). So I bought a set of YSS shocks. Huge improvement. But great if they work better on the Meteor.
Yes I found them a tad tight on the Hunter too, but they seem to work better on the meteor which is strange. Maybe the meteor shocks are just a lot worse?! 👍🍻
Very good video Steve. Nicely done. As I mentioned previously, I'll probably get some Hunter shocks myself as soon as Buddy has passed his first MOT next year. He needs to be stock to pass the first one, after that, not so much. Your battery didn't appear to have died like mine did Steve. On my bike the fuel pump wasn't firing up and it couldn't even light up the dash and Tripper pod anymore. Once we got the bike started the ECU light was on and it said "Check battery". So mine was basically not present any more ! The way the starter was clicking, sounded like the battery was still doing its job. I think you may have been unlucky and had the starter stop in a sticky position, last time you started the bike. I had something similar happening to Norman when he was new. They fiddled with the starter motor and then it stopped happening. If that happens and the battery is not fully topped up, then yes, it just clicks and you are going nowhere. With a charged battery, it is usually strong enough to turn the starter past the sticky point and then it spins up freely and the bike can start. Have you had the battery on a charger and checked the volts ? Your battery certainly didn't seem dead to me and I reckon it should still be serviceable. Anyway, funny to see you effing and blinding again and it all worked out well in the end 👍🏻 Take care mate. Love to the Exmouth crew ! Garry & Ruby
Hello matey, yes you have nicer flatter roads as well which helps. I was thinking the same about the battery and it's been fine since so I don't really know whats going on there...my gut feeling is its still seen better days. In the video I did rock it back and forward incase the soloenoid was stuck but still wouldn't start. Strange one , but I was promised a free battery anyway so might as well. Love to all Garry. I hope your welcome and Rudy is munching those sooozziages.
Shocking vid ER 🤪 Buy a house near an airport - complain about aeroplanes 🤣 Just messing. So much to like about this video. Great work with the suspension comparison 👌🏼 The batteries in both my RE’s were shot at just over 12 months old 🤷🏻♂️
Yes I did by a house near a airport but didn't think they would be taking off or landing there , I should have done my research into how it all worked.....or was it you training for your PPL......... Yes I think the battery has seen better day ...and it had only done 900 miles in 3 years before I had it...the writing is on the wall there.
I can't comment on the hunter shocks but I looked at what the Indian's do ,and found they use classic endurance gas shocks. So I ordered on ebay £61 and the difference is very noticeable, I'll keep the bike longer now.
Do you know what brand of shocks they are on the Royal Enfield 350's? I have a BSA Gold Star 650, the stock fitment shocks are "Gabriel" brand, I didn't think the exposed springs suited the shrouded front forks, I bought a pair ofr Girling shrouded shocks which are manufactured in the UK, the ride difference is night and day. The Girlings cost me £155.00, there are replicas available at £79.00, but I went for the originals.
Damn it yes, I need to re-film this now...infact doing some stunts would be good for views. I can see you're a doctor now by the looks of it so if you could be on the medical team while I film that would be great : )
that damn saddlebags 73 has a noisy drone watching you now ;;;; interesting pink floyd sound effects going over the bumps ;;; this could be a new venture ;;; don't tell s73 ;;
Nice additions. Strangely I don't get any vibration in my Meteor standard mirrors. I put bar end mirrors on my Classic because all I could see in the standard mirrors was my shoulders😅 Wider bars on the Meteor mitigate that problem. Going to look at the suspension next.
To be fair the standard mirrors don't vibrate too bad at all, they are still pretty good but I fancied a change. The Hunter shocks are a big improvement.
@@exeterrider good to hear, mines a keeper too! I love it, I’m keeping it till it’s too heavy for me, then it’s something smaller and lighter, hopefully, that won’t be for a few years yet! We shall have to meet up sometime, and have coffee. 😎🏍👍😁☕️
I see what you mean, I do have to hunt around for the mirrors more than I did before...you got me thinking now, maybe its a back step...I may change back but I do like the look of the bike with them on. Thanks : )
Thats awesome Paul,,,what did you order? spuernova? have you test ridden one too? Little secret here but get the springs (if you feel you need them ) but also the DNA filter (video coming) its a huge difference!!!!!!!!!!! Send me picture would be cool, email is in the normal place in the description still : )
I'm still slightly mystified and discombobulated Steve by this video having now watched the opening section twice and all the rest too. I tend to think it's the difference in travel that's made the difference in bump absorption. However, there will be a change in geometry and high speed handling might suffer as the Huntr is a considerably lighter bike. However, I'm sure you can explain.😉
Hi Andy, The Hunter has the same frame and isn't much lighter. Its a combination of things that make the Hunter suspension better, much like the comparison section shows the gaps between each spring is much wider on the Hunter springs therefore the windings are easy to "spring" . As shown the Hunter springs slow a lot better. High speed handling is the same on the M5 etc just nicer....Hope that makes sense.
OMG here in India people are replacing hunter suspension with classic 350 because hunter stock suspensions are stiff and not comfortable and you find Hunter suspension good. Seems like it's all in the mind. 😊
21 plate, I bought it a few months ago with 900 miles on it so it hasn't been used much, and to my knowledge it has not been plugged into a charger in that time...even more reason to think its seen better days I think.
Great video. Typical that happened on camera with the battery😂 Certainly looks better with the black springs, and seemed to cope with the bumps better. Happy riding 👍

I'm getting rid of mine because of a Intermittent jerking, Dealer doesn't know what it is, Talked to other dealers they haven't got a clue. I've spent two hundred pounds trying to cure it myself. Even the loan bike did it. So it makes me feel there is a design fault. When I had mine serviced. The loan bike did it on the way back to dealer. No fault codes stored. And Only does it when you ride it for long periods of time, So makes me wonder that something is breaking down when a component gets hot. Pitty because it's the most comfortable bike I've owned.
That's a real shame, I've never heard of that before and mine has never done it. Over all they are good reliable bikes, my battery is due a change anyway which is why this halterneck to me. I hope you have more luck next time.

Exactly that mate yes...much plusher : )
Looks way better Steve 👍Now you just need some spoked wheels and a classic tank and mudguards and you’re all set 😉
😂😂😂And maybe some some clean relys! It's been fine since but still need a new battery me thinks 👍
A clue that the battery is on the way out seems to be when the clock in the main display deos not keep to the correct time. At least that is what happened with my OEM battery after two and a bit years.
That's intresting. I know that's the case on the tripper nav for sure 👍
HI there just a quicky, always tighten the nut onto the bolt ,not the bolt onto the nut.😊
I thought I did both there on the top one? But anyway, yes I agree 👍
Let me know how you get on 👍🍻
I didn't know you were such technician. Nicely done!
@@flatcapcaferacer I can do the basics. I quite enjoy it.
Hi, since you have been riding with the hunter suspension for a while. Are there any cons? During the handling or riding in the twisties etc..
Nope, its the best mod I've made...wouldnt go back.
Steve listening to the video on slow motion, the engine sounds like a single cylinder Lister barge engine❤😂
Your right, I wish it sounded like that all the time, then again I like a faster engine 🤣👍
@@exeterrider 🤣
That's a great comment! Lister makes the 2nd best-sounding single on the planet, right behind Enfield.
Few would understand the lister engine comment, but us 3 do👍
It'll be those new mirrors sapping your battery 😂
Guess so😂😂
Very good video Steve.
Anyway, funny to see you effing and blinding again and it all worked out well in the end 👍🏻
Take care mate.
@@exeterrider You can keep that battery as an emergency spare perhaps ?
Take care mate, looking forward to much nonsense on Thursday 🐶😂🔥🔥🔥
@@economicalrides o jeez, this week,,times flying...yes mate its in the diary : )

Really useful info for Meteor riders. I’m guessing the ride is more “plush” now?
Much much better!
Where did you order the shocks?

Hunter shocks?
@@artiecisneros4691 yes, shocks from a RE Hunter

Thank you, very much appreciate your prompt response.
Shocking vid ER 🤪 Buy a house near an airport - complain about aeroplanes 🤣 Just messing. So much to like about this video. Great work with the suspension comparison 👌🏼
The batteries in both my RE’s were shot at just over 12 months old 🤷🏻♂️
Oh sh!t my himalayan battery is just over 3 years old. time to put some pennies away for a replacement!
@@AliasMrHackenbacker It’s doing well 👏🏼
Yes I did by a house near a airport but didn't think they would be taking off or landing there , I should have done my research into how it all worked.....or was it you training for your PPL......... Yes I think the battery has seen better day ...and it had only done 900 miles in 3 years before I had it...the writing is on the wall there.
Economical rides recently had to replace his after 3 years too.
@@Saddlebags73 It'll fail now!
I am thinking of doing exactly the opposite on my rock hard back suspension of my hunter😂😂
Strange that on the Hunter it feels a bit tight ,but on the Meteor ....it just works so well.
Good video, whete did you source your Hunter shocks from? I cant seem to find any onther than Ebay from india.
Main dealer OEM👍
I can't comment on the hunter shocks but I looked at what the Indian's do ,and found they use classic endurance gas shocks. So I ordered on ebay £61 and the difference is very noticeable, I'll keep the bike longer now.
Good news . £61 is a no brainer...Good to hear its staying with you longer now.
How long do the batteries last on those bikes?
3 years or so from my experience, so I need to change it I think.
High, Royal Enfield make these shocks themselves👍
You're ready for a classic GP now that you have your push start perfected. Also... look Mum no hands! You'll be standing on the seat next!
Damn it yes, I need to re-film this now...infact doing some stunts would be good for views. I can see you're a doctor now by the looks of it so if you could be on the medical team while I film that would be great : )
@exeterrider that was work a nick name lol It's more to do with healing things with a plug rather than a pulse though!
@@drbristowtube 😂👍
You could have had my Hunter shocks, without doubt the worst rear suspension on any bike I’ve ever ridden. Swapping mine for some Hagon shocks.
damn I missed the offer! Yes its funny how they work so much better on the Meteor!?!?
What did you have the shocks on?
These are brand new RE Hunter shocks, they haven't been on any other bike .
that damn saddlebags 73 has a noisy drone watching you now ;;;; interesting pink floyd sound effects going over the bumps ;;; this could be a new venture ;;; don't tell s73 ;;
I think hes learnt to fly a plane. He will go to any lenth to cause sound interference. I will return to one of his videos and ruin it.
Looked like you'd left the lights an hazards òn 😂
Yes I did, pnly for the amount of time you see filming mind..ha : )
Nice additions. Strangely I don't get any vibration in my Meteor standard mirrors. I put bar end mirrors on my Classic because all I could see in the standard mirrors was my shoulders😅 Wider bars on the Meteor mitigate that problem. Going to look at the suspension next.
To be fair the standard mirrors don't vibrate too bad at all, they are still pretty good but I fancied a change. The Hunter shocks are a big improvement.
Yep, you and I are some how related with luck! 😂 only issue is, I would not been able to get it started.
Your a fit guy, you would be OK bumping it I think 👍
Can’t do that with your dct! I recently changed the battery on my dct, I was lucky, I was at Tremlett’s in Ashburton hen it wouldn’t start! 😎🏍😁👍
Yes you are pretty stuffed with a DCT in those cases...I should change mine really.
@@exeterrider you mean that you are considering changing your dct!? 🏍😎🙁
@@roberthallas349 Ohh no ! just the battery...The NC is a keeper....well I think so anyway.
@@exeterrider good to hear, mines a keeper too! I love it, I’m keeping it till it’s too heavy for me, then it’s something smaller and lighter, hopefully, that won’t be for a few years yet! We shall have to meet up sometime, and have coffee. 😎🏍👍😁☕️
@roberthallas349 sounds good to me👍
Bikes really should have kickstarters….they used to
The accountants said no : )
Yeah totally stranded if electric fails except bump start
Good stuff there. Not keen on those mirrors. You can clearly see stuff behind you now. No. Not for me. I like the game of what’s that fuzzy thing?
I see what you mean, I do have to hunt around for the mirrors more than I did before...you got me thinking now, maybe its a back step...I may change back but I do like the look of the bike with them on. Thanks : )
Ordered mine today but 6-8 weeks delivery
Thats awesome Paul,,,what did you order? spuernova? have you test ridden one too? Little secret here but get the springs (if you feel you need them ) but also the DNA filter (video coming) its a huge difference!!!!!!!!!!! Send me picture would be cool, email is in the normal place in the description still : )
@@exeterriderSorry, I’m now on my second 350 meteor. I’ve ordered the Hunter suspension. Quoted £70 ??
@@paulegan7376 yes that seems OK👍
10mm makes all the difference, she said...
She works for Tescos and you're right every little helps.
You could’ve used classic 500’s suspension instead. It is even more comfortable than hunter and classic reborn. Also it’s gas charged.
Maybe yes but I think the centres are longer ? I knew these would fit the frame no problem 👍
OMG here in India people are replacing hunter suspension with classic 350 because hunter stock suspensions are stiff and not comfortable and you find Hunter suspension good. Seems like it's all in the mind. 😊
The video shows the improvement compared to the Meteor stanard shocks...maybe the Classis shocks are even betetr again?
@exeterrider Hmm. I am hunter owner and now feeling better 😁
@Flute-Ful 😂👍
Biggest dowside of these bikes is there are no foot starter.
I guess the amount you would need it is part of the balence...They are easy to bump start.
How old is the bike?
21 plate, I bought it a few months ago with 900 miles on it so it hasn't been used much, and to my knowledge it has not been plugged into a charger in that time...even more reason to think its seen better days I think.
Great video. Typical that happened on camera with the battery😂
Certainly looks better with the black springs, and seemed to cope with the bumps better. Happy riding 👍
@@Tojj29 Thanks mate, yes although I didn't want it to happen , I am glad I was filming at the time...it added to the video..I hope to get a new battery soon if if it hasn't happened since.

The Meteor shown on the current RE website is pictured with different shocks with evenly spaced springs. Not seen any like that in any shops though.
Well Done Ashley, Yes ,I noticed the same as well a few weeks back...I wonder if they are going to up-date them?
No way was that staged-not with all those bleeps!!!😂
Ha, Behind the beeps I was only saying "crumbs"😂
I'm getting rid of mine because of a
Intermittent jerking,
Dealer doesn't know what it is,
Talked to other dealers they haven't got a clue. I've spent two hundred pounds trying to cure it myself.
Even the loan bike did it.
So it makes me feel there is a design fault.
When I had mine serviced.
The loan bike did it on the way back to dealer.
No fault codes stored.
And Only does it when you ride it for long periods of time,
So makes me wonder that something is breaking down when a component gets hot.
Pitty because it's the most comfortable bike I've owned.
That's a real shame, I've never heard of that before and mine has never done it.
Over all they are good reliable bikes, my battery is due a change anyway which is why this halterneck to me.
I hope you have more luck next time.

I've read on forums around the world that people have experienced that problem.

Absolutely wrong. My Hornet 750 naked bike takes up the bumps better than my RE 350 Meteor. It deffo needs better shocks.

Do you think that the battery problem may have something to do with the ignition, lights and hazards being on while you were filming may have had some effect?
It was literally 2 minutes, the time it took to film what you saw there...I think it is on its way out anyway tbh.
