One died shortly after from his wounds and the other went crazy with the grief of losing his other brothers, stripped naked and leaped overboard to be eaten by sharks. True story but not quite as romantic as the film would probably have liked.
The ship they served on was the USS Juneau, an atlanta class light cruiser specialized in anti air combat. The ships magazine exploded when the torpedo of the japanese submarine I-26 hit it, killing most of the crew instantly. Only 2 of the 5 brothers survived the initial explosion and died while waiting for rescue as the navy thought that nobody could have survived that explosion. When a rescue ship Was finally sent, of only 100 survivors only 10 were recued in time. Juneau went down with 683 men.

I’m from Waterloo, IA and have been living here for nearly 5 years. Kelly Sullivan was one of my teachers, a great one. The Sullivan Brothers mean so much to our community and I’m praying that this ship can be saved. They deserve to be honored.

I worked with Identical twins when I was in the Navy. One of them was my supervisor, and his brother was at our sister command. They used to swap duty sections without letting section leaders know.

A similar thing happened to The Pilgrim near the end of March 2020… Water was leaking in and she was sunk a little deeper, but similar to this. They couldn’t save The Pilgrim. She was a tall ship and thus made of wood, and started cracking when they started lifting. Hopefully this ship can withstand the process and be saved. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It was the Sullivans that the military decided to reassign siblings away from the front lines in case of a death, so that a family wouldn't be completely wiped out.
From what I have heard (I have been following this), the starboard side propeller, the rudder of the ship, and the quick shutting of most of the watertight doors, have saved the ship, from really sinking, at the dock.
The ship was built over 80 years ago. They where not designed to last a long time. This is really sad and I want to save historic ships but they need costly. Maintenance to try to keep afloat.

And other ways, such as burying the bottom in mud or concrete, make it hard to access the hull incase something happens. There is no good way to preserve ships except spending the millions keeping ahead of time. Millions most museum ships don’t have.

Haven't heard anything about the airbag systems they use for raising other large ships like the Costa Concordia? I would hope there is a salvage company that would help out. Five brothers, true Americans, that knew their country needed them and as a team they volunteered to serve, and gave it all for our freedom!

I live 10 minutes away from it and I went on a tour of them because my neighbor does tours there and I pretty sure I heard him say that it was sinking and they were trying to save it.

This doesn’t cover the entire story. I’d recommend looking up the story itself. The Naval Park already raised over a million dollars last November to fix the Hull but paused work during the winter months due to the cold water. It’s likely due to the cold weather that the ship is still stuck half sunken.
The ship can absolutely be saved. She's a Fletcher class destroyer and Fletchers never went down easily even under enemy fire. Not even the mighty Yamato could sink a Fletcher in battle. The shallow water is nothing for a Fletcher.

Believe me it was my very first time I truly cried when I saw it first time. I was around eight and now I'm 73 and it's still in me.
There is now a law that states that all family members can't serve on the same ship or base bc of this incident

I recently read the history of the Sullivan Brothers and the USS The Sullivans. It was some great literature. Haven't seen the movie yet, but I am sure it will bring some tears from just seeing the clip of them entering Heaven together. Where can I get a copy of it?
