I learned to play it 40 years ago by slowing down the vinyl at least a hundred times, hard work without today's tutorials ,what a pity but ..what luck👍🏻
Excellent tutorial! Repeating several times each short part before going to the next session is absolutely essential for comprehension and for learning. Thank you for this awesome lesson!
Wow!!! You guys actually did a tutorial for this song. What a piece of art!! It is indeed intense but it’s great to watch. It would also be great to see the keyboard solo for another masterpiece on the same album, “cinema show’” Just wanted to mention it. Thanks again for posting this tutorial. :)))
I love HD Piano....I asked for the lesson so blame me and then they go and delivered ! You will need to lie down in a dark room for a rest after learning this. What can I say....Joe and the guys are the best :)
I knew play this song ( more or less ) but just forgot after 2 year without play keyboard, you are realy helpping me a lot to get it back! Thanks a lot! Great job !!!
I can't think of a single piano intro in rock history that's better than this. By the way, I just noticed that your voice sounds a lot like David Gilmour.
On our newer videos, a lighter background means the pedal is down, and a darker background means the pedal is up. More pedaling tips: ruclips.net/video/7HjcTe4KPCA/видео.html
I studied a bunch of prog rock whilst learning piano/keyboards in my early teens around 1980. Mostly Wakeman, Emerson, Jobson, some other (post)-Gabriel Banks. I was kind of out of touch with where music was headed at the time. Funnily, when I was about 19, I wrote a piano piece extremely similar to this. Similar, in that it had very willfully mangled harmonic structure, a left hand just slapping octaves downstairs, and choppy metre, designed mostly to impress (or put off?) people, which I can only imagine Tony (around the same age when he did it) would totally admit was kind of a heap of "Here you go, fuckers!" piano bullshit, like he was at an audition for a school he didn't care about getting into. Eerily similar, though. Anyway, even as a Banks fan, I never actually listened to Firth of Fifth until my late twenties. Fell in love with it, except for that part (and its 2nd reprise on the ARP). Couldn't get around that. Cut too close. Lately, I feel it's a necessary chaotic prelude to a wonderful piece of music much like the "difficult for most" jazz-odyssey intro to Close to the Edge.
Hello!! I just watched your video for the first time. I am beginner in piano, so I hope to be able to play this one day. Perhaps, could you upload one day the piano in torn curtain? Or marquee moon?
Maybe this is a dumb question, but how do i know when i press the pedal? are those the grey horizontal lines ? I never use the pedal but it sounds way better when I do. :) thanks for the lessons!
Pedaling with each new chord is often a good rule of thumb, but if it’s sounding muddy, scale back the amount of pedaling! On our newer videos, a lighter background means the pedal is down, and a darker background means the pedal is up. More pedaling tips: ruclips.net/video/7HjcTe4KPCA/видео.html
can you guys please a jailhouse rock tutorial? I have been WAITING FOR SO LONG ps I already voted for it I just have seen it at #18 on the request list for so long and i just NEED one thanks Brian
At 18.12 I’m pretty sure the RH chord should go up a tone as you approach the key change😉😊. This is brilliant though cuz I’ve been learning it for about 20 years(yup)......IN THE WRONG KEY 🤣. I really don’t know how but I worked it it by ear when I wer a young’n 😱
That's true! It's largely because of other bars which have fewer than 16 sixteenths: bars of 13/16 and 15/16. So, it's basically to stay consistent and get our brains thinking about bars measured by 16th notes rather than quarter notes.
I thought this was a practical joke when Joe started playing. I’d never expect this to be a Genesis song? Sounds like a classical piece. Must be for hardcore fans only. Hmm
all you boffins act like this is standard issue piano stuff , i play a few blues licks on guitar and to me when i fist heard it and still, it sounds like awesome genius classical composition like bach or something .. must be great been brainy .. great lesson though . but what a challenge for a beginner like me .
Sorry you’re not happy with our pacing- we’re constantly searching for the perfect speed to suit as many learners as possible. The video player at HDpiano.com lets you slow down playback-from mobile AND desktop-for all videos. We also built a custom looping tool that allows the viewer to focus on those extra challenging spots. If you're not interested in trying our site, you can use the speed controls on RUclips desktop to slow down playback.

Would be nice to see the "foot work" too. Noticed that the first bass chord is held shorter than it sounds. How is this done technically?

Why call the time signature for those bars 16/16? Just call it 4/4.
That's true! It's largely because of other bars which have fewer than 16 sixteenths: bars of 13/16 and 15/16. So, it's basically to stay consistent and get our brains thinking about bars measured by 16th notes rather than quarter notes.

Why is 16/16 not just 4/4 ? Probably a stupid question
