    RIYAZ KHAIRABADI
Riyaz Khairabadi, also known as Syed Riyaz Ahmad (1853-1934), emerges as a significant figure in Urdu poetry, hailing from Gorakhpur in the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). Born in Khairabad, Sitapur, Riyaz Khairabadi was a contemporary of Mehdi Afandi, reflecting the literary ethos of his time. Riyaz's poetic journey began as a disciple of Asir Lakhnawi, and his association with Amir Minai further shaped his poetic expression. In 1872, he established the "Matba-e-Darakhshan" printing press in Khairabad, launching the newspaper "Riyazul Akhbar." Later moving to Lucknow, Riyaz continued to make significant contributions to Urdu literature through "Riyaz-e-Akhbar" and the journal "Tarraqqi." Renowned for his diverse poetic forms, including ghazals, Qasida, Masnavi, and Naat, Riyaz's distinctive voice resonates through his works. Despite the thematic focus on the allure of wine in his poetry, Riyaz Khairabadi remained personally untouched by its influence. His evocative verses, especially in the collection "Riyaz-e-Rizvan," have etched a lasting impression, presenting a vivid, enchanting tapestry of life. In his later years, Riyaz adopted a tranquil lifestyle, spending the final chapter of his life in Khairabad, where he peacefully passed away on July 28, 1934, leaving behind a poetic legacy that continues to captivate readers with its intoxicating imagery and unique perspectives on life.
