Harri you are absolutely correct about the nasty riff. That bass player all.over that G string on that early 70's Fender Percision bass on the opening riff. The sound was very unique.

The O’Jays are one of my favorites!! Went with a musician friend so we had pretty good seats! The crowd went crazy when Stevie Wonder showed up in the audience!! 💰💸

This song is Immortal. It has been used on so many films , everyone knows this song..it's a part of American consciousness. That opening riff is probably known by most people in the world. It's so Iconic.

Philly Soul in Harri's house!!! Yes Harri, this song it timeless, and this was an epic performance. I don't know that I've ever seen a Soul Train crowd so amped up as they were here! And I agree, Guvnor, that Gamble & Huff should get so much more credit than they receive. Philadelphia took over from Motown as the new capitol of Soul/R&B in the '70s, and *those two men...along with Thom Bell...were the biggest reason why!* I'm not sure which other group you were trying to think of in your reaction, but couldn't come up with the name. Was it The Delfonics? The Stylistics? The Spinners? They were all amazing -- as well as my gorgeous gals, The Three Degrees! ps~Terrific selection, Imadrummin!

Usually when bands would appear on Soul Train they'd just lip sync as opposed to singing live. I'm glad they made an exception with this.
That was fantastic! I've never heard it live and certainly not at the sped up pace that was obvious but completely needed for the occasion! I really enjoyed watching those dancers too!

You are so right about Gamble and Huff, they lite the R&B charts on fire for years with the Philly Soul sound in the whole 70’s decade, and the coming from me who grew up in Memphis with Stax records in the 60’s and 70’s. I would like to search and find a great documentary on Gamble and Huff, truly legendary!

There was always horns in Gamble and Huff Philadelphia International Records productions. This live appearance on Soul Train was one of the greats. We're very proud of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff here in Philly! Happy 50th anniversary to them and Philadelphia International Records!
Session player Anthony Jackson's funky, irresistible bass line MAKES the song, so much so that songwriters/producers Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff credited him as co-writer on the track. It's not complicated, but I've never heard any other bassist get quite the right feel (including the nappy headed white guy who appears in the O'Jays touring band on this "Soul Train" clip).

Love The O’Jays that funky guitar 🎸 really got the crowd going & the O’Jays voices take me back to my record collection of Motown, Philly, Florida clubs !! The dancing is outta this world, they could compete with The Temptations and The Four Tops for dance moves 😻☮️💜 The horns & conga 🪘‘S & drums really made this version 😀
One of the greatest bass lines of all time, without a doubt.
I do prefer the slower, more deliberate version though...it lends a sinister feeling and more of a blues feel to the funk, which i find most appropriate to the subject of the song.
Still cool to see this version being played live back in the day!

Not a bad live version, but it is too fast. The studio version slows it down a bit and has a better groove to it.
