Key points include:
Recognising that graphic design is as much about problem-solving as it is about artistry.

Drawing inspiration from different sources and not limiting oneself to graphic design.
The importance of carrying a sketchbook to capture ideas as they come.
Finding a passion outside of your main work to keep creativity flowing.
Realising that everyone has doubts about their abilities and accepting that as part of the learning process.
Embracing failure as a part of the process.
Loving the process as much as the end goal.
Will also recommends the book "Atomic Habits" for anyone looking to improve their daily routines to achieve their goals more efficiently. Whether you're a novice graphic designer or someone interested in the field, this video provides an insightful look at the realities of being a graphic designer and offers practical tips to navigate your career effectively.

So sorry to hear that :( I hope you and your family are safe
Thank you Will! Your channel is a revelation for fresh graphic designers like me. I'm from Germany and there is absolutely no other channel about design that comes close to being as great and informative as yours! You are a real asset, especially for topics such as orientation, motivation and self-doubt. I thank you for this. Your sympathetic and authentic way is fun to listen to.
Wow, thanks!
Love your videos you actually speak sense! This info is something I will pass on to designers who I manage and juniors I work with!
straight to the point, concise, love it.
Bro gave a free therapy session. Appreciated ❤
You have been a pivot point on my journey into design when i return to your videos as I progressed my learning and I find your videos motivational and informative, great tips Will as ever in this video and I do find the instruction tips on software and details of kerning are keeping me focused ;-)
Hello Will! My first time to check your channel because I wanted to change my logo for myself (branding ofc). And now, because of your video tips and tricks, I enjoy "playing" Adobe Illustrator and hustle. I am a digital fashion designer, but thanks to you, I have another hobby that can make money! I have weaknesses in typography, look forward to your another font recommendation 😊
I've learned so much from you, so thank you so much!❤ I would love to see another part of COME DESIGN WITH ME series.🎉❤
"focus on systems that get you there", thank you Will
Love the process (system), thanks. ❤
This is refreshing. Loved it
Thank you so much for this video! Really helpful advices. I'm going to put into practice the 4th one, I'll buy a little sketchbook, have a pencil and start writing or drawing all my ideas. I'm not that good at drawing tbh so that will help me a lot !
From a mother of two toddlers that had a huge 4 years gap in the industry of graphic design just to get a bit better at parenting, I thank so so much for your videos. Recently I've started again from scratch and this stuff that you are making is such a big help.
That is awesome!
Great video Will. Definitely helpful, I'm not a beginner but have been stressed in creating the perfect project every time and lost alot of motivation. Much needed video!

Thank you for this awesome advice..... Im a beginner GD and this is not just helpful but an inspiration for me....
Would you like to get some testimonials?
always remember, design is human, the art, the project, that's just part of the process, design works with people, the user, the brand and their ideals, the emotions and the vision, design empathy, it's hw you communicate, how the brand express itself, design, at the beggining and the end, is always human, when i started i thought that design was art, then i knew it was project and problem solving, then i realized when i finished my bachelor's in design that it is human, more than soling problems, its solving someone's problem, and why thyat matter, and to whom it matters, and probably after some years design will have a different meaning to me, only time will tell
Great video and you talked about a inspring video by Peter McKinnon.. I tried to find it. Do you remember the title of it?
I recently graduated a UI/UX design school back in April. And I’ve been sitting on my hands with it, paralyzed by fear that I can’t do it and I’m just a fraud. So I’m about to clock in to my same old forklift job that I hate again on Monday. I don’t know what to do.
Hey would you like to help me? I'm looking for a graphic designer to colab with.

Thank you! :)
Im not a beginner but still this video was so informative and inspirational, thank you will❤
You're so welcome!
I'm a first-year bachelor of media design student. At the end of this year, I have to choose 1 of 3 majors. I can go into graphic design, UX/UI design or animation. I've already ruled out UX/UI design as I just don't have a passion for this. So I'm left with graphic design and animation. I've been told that graphic design is dying, but animation is a really hard industry to get into - not very helpful advice. I don't really have a preference between the two (and if I could, I would study both!), so I was wondering what your opinion is on graphic design as a career in the future? I should also mention that I'm living in New Zealand - the industry here is behind and not as easy to get into as some other countries might be. So, I know animation is not your career, but what are your opinions on the graphic design industry in the future? Do you see the industry holding strong, or is graphic design a dying industry? I don't think it is a dying industry, but I have been told by many people now that it is; perhaps this is just in New Zealand?
constant improvement then. ❤
Hi. I have been following your channel and practising hard to learn the art of tracing using Illustrator. I am facing lot of difficulties when I trace Arabic alphabets. I have seen almost all of your videos regarding tracing. But for some reason I am not able to cope up with Arabic or Urdu alphabets as it has lots of turns and corners. Could you please make a video on it. Thanks.
@will Paterson what if I can’t draw or sketch can I still venture into graphic design
You forgot to put the other video, this video was so good, so I wanted to watch the other one
Ooops! I'll add that on - this is the link if you still want to watch! ruclips.net/video/BuW4iIJBjsk/видео.html :D
@@willpatersondesign thank you for giving me the link, watching it now...
Great tips thank you so much :D Trying to just start myself any tips on good time management for someone who's trying to do it on my spare time?
Great question. When it comes to time management, it's all about focus. Find the times that you know you are the most focused and then double down during that time frame. Another helpful tip is to understand your main objective. If your goal is x dollars or even just doing graphic design for fun to stimulate your creativity, go into the act of thinking about the end goal. Hope this helps but Will is the master who can most definitely answer better from his perspective. :)
Hi Swan, would you like to help me with a small project?
I agree. Effective time management is a skill that takes practice and continuous refinement. Is there anyone here tried to experiment with different time management strategies to find what works best? :)
I agree with @dotpenji, all we need is time management and it makes our life easier with that system.
@@dotpenji - Agree! main objective and the end goal are interconnected elements in time management. Thank you, Will for this video! Your hard work truly motivates and inspires a lot of people.
I'm a programmer and 3d artist, so that's the thing that isn't my thing
What languages do you recommend learning as a designer?
@@looksmatteronly I have 2 recommendations: 1 is python which is a nice way to start coding, but because you are a designer, I recommend learning css and html which aren't exactly coding languages but that's how people design sites you can learn JavaScript (not java which is a completely other language) which I'm not that good at but It's how you can make the site function
Hi Will, do you ever get sick of graphic design or feel that minimalistic branding styles are oversaturated/ over done? I’m a beginner graphic designer but already bored of branding and the visual styles I see, what should I do?
I would say that graphic design isn't graphic art - it's all about how it works in the end. If you're bored, start a passion project :)
❤ thank you Will. Just started learning graphic design this year including illustrator. Sometimes I question myself, am i in the right path? Because i feel like I'm going too slow though I always tell myself to enjoy the process. I guess some days are just like. Gonna keep going anyway coz I found something I really want to pursue.
That's totally normal! Absolutely stick with it, there's always new things to learn!
I plan to major in graphic design for uni next year, and every uni website I look at has a degree that leads to graphic design under a different name- fine arts, studio arts, design, and so on- could you help and explain what I should be looking for when trying to find a degree that can put me on the graphic design career path?
I'm actually in the process of research colleges that I want to apply to for graphic design (in canada), and I think the best way to see what works for you would be to look at the names of the actual classes rather than the course as a whole and see what suits your interest. There are plenty of great graphic design programs that might be called "visual media" or something else without the words graphic design in there at all. Also, i think it could depend on what type of graphic design you're interested in. If you want to do poster designs and more abstract work maybe a design degree under fine arts would be more your style, or if you want to do brand design then a program under media and marketing might be better. Hope this helps!
Hi, Will! We are waiting for Brand Guideline or Logo Guideline for Illustrator🙂. Hope it ll be soon)) Regards!
Working on it! Although it won't be as efficient as the Figma version.
Hi Will, thank you for the sharing, you give us mental support to keep moving on. I like design a lot, but I have problem learning the graphic software, there are so many details and steps on the software, how could I overcome this process, could you share with us the learning process of learning the software.Thank you.
I'm so glad the videos help you! I've got a brand new course launching this Friday which I think will help you with this, here is the link if you want to check it out: www.logo-launch.com :D
@@willpatersondesign I wanted to express my gratitude for your incredible work. I recently watched the introduction to your logo design preview video, and I was truly amazed. I have a deep passion for design, but I've often found myself overwhelmed by the multitude of function keys in design software. Consequently, I've tended to stick to admiring others' creations without making much progress with my own designs.
Your video has given me renewed hope and motivation. I'm determined to continue watching and learning from your tutorials, hoping to finally bridge the gap between my passion for design and my actual skills.
I eagerly look forward to your upcoming tutorials and want to thank you once again for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
First to be here…..Thanks❤
Well then first reply
