  • Trying a different brand of shift kit in a Turbo 400 Trans rather than what I normally use. This trans is to be used in the TA. Turned out I didn't like the combo i used in this vid and went a different direction in the shift kit department.

      I'm not a fan of the TransGo kit. I made a video later and replaced it with a B&M kit.

    So, I'm rebuilding a TH400 out of a 70 buick. The poor thing was put through a demolition derby. I'm currently doing a complete overhaul so that I can use it for my daily driver.
    The post/stud/shaft for the valve body accumulator piston in this video comes with this TransGo kit? What particular kit is it?
    The snapring for mine broke and ended up in the oil pan. The stud is all chewed up, and so far the only place I've seen them available is through this kit you use. Any information you can provide regarding procurement of this part would be very helpful.
    Thank you!

    Just discovered your channel. Great work! Thanks for doing this video and providing a better perspective on the install of this kit. You get a much better view of the process and components from this vantage point versus under the car. I know it's been awhile since you've done this video but could I ask you a few questions? I know you built this for tire shredding but could you please describe what your part throttle shifts are like on the street? Are they loud, hard, and screeching every single time with the feed holes drilled to .156? Are you using a higher stall converter than stock? Thank you!

    • @Oldsmob455
      @Oldsmob455  3 года назад

      The way I installed that kit it had really harsh DOWNSHIFTS. Fairly weak upshifts. I took it out and replaced it with a B&M kit that works great. I have a video on that. The car has a seemingly stock converter in it so it gets great upshifts. The looser the converter the less you feel the shift.

    I used a Transgo kit on two transmissions, a Turbo 350 in my V8 Vega, it would black marks 2nd to 3rd shift and a kit for my 454 Chevelle Turbo 400 black marks 2nd to 3rd shifts as well. The felt type filter needs to go on the 400, I used the small Turbo 350 hydraulic screen filter for better fluid pick up.

    I bought a car with a shift kit recently installed and found that the kickdown switch on the throttle is missing. It's a 1967 that had the 2 speed converter feature. Would adding a shift kit be a reason someone would delete that part ? Just rebuilt the engine and haven't driven it yet so unsure whether it kicks down properly or not. When power is put to the wire connector at the firewall for the kickdown solenoid I can hear it click. . But I am missing the actual switch that mounts to the throttle.

    Hey if anyone has a shift kit like that. See if it’s a fairbanks. Back in the day it cost $75.00 for master kit. And $9.99 for shift kit. B&m was $25.00, but what people didn’t know was fairbanks was a better kit it utilized your own shift plate and direction to drill it yourself. Make it mild to very hot

    I’m sure you’ve realized when you skip the modified 1-2 shift valve and plugging the 1-2 bore exhaust hole you can not manually hold first gear. The TH400 will shift for you even if the shifter is in low gear without this upgrade.

    • @louisgreenberg5384

      @headflowinc so if you have it in first gear and floor it it will swift to 2nd when the time is right. will it go thew all the gears and the sifter is still in first

    • @jaredmayer3960
      @jaredmayer3960 Год назад

      The governor shifts it to 2nd, so if you want it to shift at higher RPM you need stronger springs in the governor or lighter flyweights.

    • @GT63AURORA
      @GT63AURORA Год назад

      Exactly! Defeats the purpose of having a Hurst Dual Gate shifter, if you can’t hold the gear manually. The TH-400 is engineered to shift up automatically at around 3,400 RPM in order to safeguard the Tranny and engine.

    Hi brother I've been watching your videos when it comes to Turbo 400 I need your advice my 69 Firebird has a turbo 400 I change the fluid and filter in the summer now is cold here in Pennsylvania and know the car have a whining sound coming from the transmission when the car warms up the whining sound almost goes away do you have any idea what can that be I used a filter that has like a material on it I heard the brass filter are better please help me thanks

    • @Oldsmob455

      Heres what the troubleshooting section says. Take the belts off and run it to be sure the noise is from the transmission. If not then could be oil pump cavitation for a number of reasons. Could be a bad converter or front pump assembly malfunction. Get the book How to work with and modify the Turbo Hydra-matic 400 transmission. It's worth its weight in gold.

      I think I would have liked it better if I installed the "race" line pressure spring. It was replaced with a trusty B&M Transpak. The harsh downshifts were gone after this.

      @@Oldsmob455 I have been told transgo is conservative on the shift. Do you remember how big you drilled the b&m plate? I think it calls for 3/16 on both feed holes. I had a b&m transpak in a th400 and I liked it, it did bust two bellhousings, but I'm not sure why. I think I had the drivetrain angle all screwed up because I put it in a 79 cutlass and made a double hump cross member hour of a chevelle cross member. I put the shift kit in my buddies 79 cutlass after I went back to a th350 and he never had any trouble with his 400. I honestly just don't know why it was busting bellhousings in mine and not his. The b&m transpak was great.

      Ok if you say so. I guess double oring on oil filter works great also. Generally if you have two seals on something then it will leak pass the oring. I will let you do that I’ll just keep to a single seal . Thank you for your input

    • @karlchilders3127

      Agreed. It is designed to only have one o-ring.

    • @jaredmayer3960
      @jaredmayer3960 Год назад

      You’re re-tarded, it’s under vacuum not pressure. You need to double o-ring the tube on these or they leak air into the pump suction. You also use the screen filter, not a paper media one. You'll literally burn the tranny up at high revs because of lack of fluid to keep the clutches and bands clamped. If you want to fry the tranny when you’re racing with it do what you say.
