Great talker, but he is either strawmanning the oposition (wich is possible due to a vagueöy defined topic) or wrong in some of his points. One example: Concerning the moral framework provided by religion I would argue we as a society need to admit its wrong to base our moral on religion. I as an atheist will give my moral framework on to my children as religious people will do with theirs. Neither my framework nor the religious is perfect, but I don't claim mine to be and mine is open to scrutiny and change based on changed circumstances of life and knowledge. That way we can grow as society and move on. If we base our values in ancient texts and claim them to be perfect we can choose to follow them only loosely, as is admitted here most believers do, but then I would ask why you should claim your moral framework to be based on religion. How do you decide which rules you accept and which you don't? And if the basis for your framework always goes back to ancient religious texts it is impossible to evolve away as refuted parts of the framework stay unchangend and keep coming back.
I feel this opener shows the requirement of carefully defining a topic. Wright in his opener seemed to focus almost entirely on the idea of Policy, rather than more general public life, where as Shewry clearly has in mind all places outside the home as the interpretation of this topic. This is why you should think carefully about the implications of the actual debate question, not just how the af try to define it. In this case siding with an af who only talk about policy could leave you open to the idea of "No churches allowed" if not worded carefully. I did enjoy the af in this debate being told they have a burden though when so many on their side (though not necessarily in the room) deny this clearly true fact.

Still waiting for a clear definition of religion.
In my opinion, I would have to say that religion is a platform for moral standards in society, which also adds a spectrum of what happens after death.
L. C. You’re an absolute idiot.

Good reasoning around the question itself. And a good point remembering which side actually has the burden of proof.
