Are Thoughts The Source Of Ego?

Is the ego the source of our thoughts or are our thoughts generated elsewhere and passed through the ego? The ego arises out of the state of identification with thought. The moment of freedom arises when we realize that we are not our thoughts-rather, we are the awareness.
I'm 18 and I've been through my fair share of suffering but I consider myself very lucky to now be waking up so early in my life
Awesome. Be careful of the ego of being "woke", though. :)
im 16 and i had that exact same feeling. :)
Thats really cool, I can relate, I am 20. I find waking up at a young age to be a great gift. Yet I can't lie, it comes with lots of difficulties too. But at any age right?
I'm so pleased for you 👍
I think waking up at an early age is actually easier because usually adults are less self-conscious than young people about their lifestyle
Whenever I get too caught up in thoughts I listen to him and it really helps put things in perspective, it's almost like waking up from a dream.
you are so right
CosmicUndeadElf ...spot on. He’s a gift....
why is this not a subject taught in school? If we were taught to embrace this Self Awareness and Self Realization from the cradle, we would not be strangers to ourselves as we are today. and by the time we became adults we would have an awareness of ourselves and of others that would enable us to truly advance as a species.
daisyroots thats exactly what i think, but not many people see the importance of it yet. in time it will become and that is when hummanity will go a bit further again and dont worry in time we will althoug it might take quite a long time, but perhaps not.
+daisyroots I highly recommend reading The Evolution of Consciousness series of books by Endall Beall if you want some hard insight into spiritual advancement without all the mystical nonsense being peddled on such a mass scale. I found these books to be hard hitting, truthful, relevant and they contain workable tools to help people truly advance their cognitive awareness without the reliance on mystical riddles and spiritual misdirection.
thank you so much ....
This is not taught in school Because the government doesn't want us to know about this, they are controlling us by food, electronics, and making us work
Too right....
3:12 "We don't see things as they are. We see them as we are."

"even the thought i failed is a lie" this guy opened my eyes
That's what you think.
"Identification of thought, the end of ego" Sounds so simple but the most difficult goal to acheive.
6 months of expensive psychotherapy created a brief illusion (due to the attention and drama) that I was over my mental illness. Then Christmas came and I sank lower in depression than ever before. Then I met a musician who recommended 'The Power of Now' and for the price of £6 my whole life was explained and I understood for the first time the whole picture. Now my mind is calm and I'm content with my existence. Wonderful stuff!
you are not your thoughts, you are not your feelings, you are that strong undercurrent, a silent watcher. Drop the labels and you will find your self.
soooooo true, and the silent beingness of the Absolute is just beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Man With No Name well said!
Dont you mean Self hahaha
You are not the thought...you are the awareness of the thought....how liberating!!
Thanks Eckhart
Thank you Eckhart Tolle. Your teachings helped me and my family so much. I did not think I would ever be capable of being happy again. Only a few years ago I found myself praying for death. I suffered from depression for many years and really hated living - then something very tragic happened and I found myself unable to cope with getting out of bed. A friend sent your book to me. I read your books often. I now feel an inner peace and joy that I felt as a child.
I love your work.
The mind constantly has thoughts going through it, and the thoughts that the self aligns itself with make up the ego. The ego is actually not a bad entity. It is when you are dominated by your ego that you become rigid as a human being. In other words, you must not be your thoughts, but rather, you have to try to be a self that has thoughts and chooses consciously which ones to align itself with.
This concept has changed the way I perceive the world, for the better. For the past 2 years,I have every day, tried to practice presence........It certainly is working and getting stronger. My life situation has not changed much, but my Life has become much more calm and peaceful and enjoyable.Thought watching has become my new hobby !!!
Tolle is such a boss man. I love listening to him speak. It always gives me such peace of mind.
Love this dude. Such a cutie.
Even though we picked up the thoughts from somewhere/past, they are kept alive in us by us identifying ourselves as mind and it's contents. For example, we are obsessed with certain thoughts because there's investment of "myself" in it. If we stop identifying as mind, negative thoughts have no power over us.
Eckhart Tolle's teachings have changed my life the most. Thank you.
I love how Eckhart's teaching in this video shows great parallels to cognitive behavioral therapy. There is a reason a lot of CBT practioners combine their therapy with mindfulness practices, like Zen style meditation.
Thank you Eckhart, you are truly an amazing being.
I feel at this moment that life is about overcoming your mind and being above it. Realizing that you can achieve anything because you have the ability to master your mind.
The level of insight is truly incredible. The impact his teachings have had on me can not be put into words. The world is undoubtedly a better place with Eckhart Tolle in it.
Because I've experienced exactly what he's talking about--the realization that I was identifying myself with my thoughts (and it caused me all kinds of terrible problems that almost led to my self-destruction)--I know he's right. Since I woke up to that and started to let the thoughts go by without clinging to them, my life has improved tremendously. Like they say, the proof is in the pudding.
Thanks Eckhart you have changed my life. I always pray for his long and healthy life.
The secret of life and happiness. This video is gold.
i like it when he nods his head and smiles when some one is asking him a question
I am amazed. This is the first time I've seen anything regarding Eckhart's teachings. WOW! So simple and so true.
I read The New Earth by Eckhart Tolle about 4 years ago. For me it was the right book at the right time. Understanding the teaching contained in this book has enriched my life immeasurably !
I humbly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand what we are and why we are here.
I hope that one day we will all know what the intention behind the greating Nasmaste really means.
Namaste.
I was "Blessed" to come across one of Eckhart Tolle video tapes at the library. His practice hit home for me...His teaching has made me aware of the destroying patterns that "I" have created in my own mind. I still have much to learn, but have come very far with the awareness of my thoughts.
I have ordered several of his books, and they are food for my brain, with help in educating myself on being aware of my own destruction, and to learn how to live a peaceful and balanced life.
I add his readings along with the greatest book of all.... "The Bible".
Seek For Guidance From Are Creator, Open Your Heart And See Him!
I love the thoughtful pauses he takes after the questions are asked. That's a sign of high intelligence. To be silent is to be still.
"Be still and KNOW, I am God."
When we are still, the intelligence of All That Is rushes in to assist us.
This video helped me a lot. I have such a hostile mind. It's so annoying that it keeps blaming me and I don't know how to stop identifying with it. It is not even true why it is blaming me. Whenever the thought suddenly comes, I feel guilty. It just blames me all the time!
Pfahaha I bursted into laughter when he said that problems are self-generated towards the end. First time I hear of someone who thinks that very same way and doesn't just deny the work of the own mind in the creation of problems - very nice experience. What is needed to solve a problem? A problem. But what would the world be without an everlasting up and down? It would remain silent without any possibility for an individual to grow at the fruit of life.
I came here to listen, so here is my reaction to what I listened:
Funnily enough that the ego itself is a thought. It is rather stunning that we use the term ego as ego means "I". By doing so we distinct a part of our self. Why is that so funny? Because we define the ego as part of our self we can give the blame to why we feel bad or why we suffer. Yet, it is an integral part of I since I is pure awareness and pure awareness/attention is the door to reality. By giving attention to something, this something comes to life in that it is integrated into our very own reality. But if I say I, "I" is/am more than pure consciousness, more than a feeling I feel, the thought I think, the impression I have and so on. I am that conscious part, yet driven by unconscious powers in an environment by that these powers and my consciousness again are influenced. And even that would never do right to describe me. The perceiving organ is always blind to itself and so am I blind to my self. First step to let go: accept it. And by accepting it there is no reason to let go of it anymore. And by that the self-created problem goes "poof". Acceptance again can only be achieved by pure honesty towards oneself. And by being purely honest one can simply listen and see what this world actually wants to tell you so hard, you can close it and yourself into your heart with all this self defined evil and good. But then again as Tolle said that if I say how the world is, I actually mean how I experienced it to be. And what words would ever be able to describe an experience as they would only depict a long gone past.
I have developed a thought pattern in my head that recalls past events and then swears at me and insults me - it's feels, perhaps, like the early stages of schizophrenia. Today I was readng 'Power of Now' and it says to observe this 'entity', don't fear it, judge it or fight it because that will make it stronger. "The pain body, which is the dark shadow cast by the ego, is actually afraid of the light of your consciousness. It's survival depends on your unconscious identification with it...[it] may seem to you like a dangerous monster that you cannot bear to look at, but... it is an unsubstantial phantom that cannot prevail against the power of your presence." Now I'm looking forward to it rearing it's ugly head again, I'm gonna take a good look at it rather than running away from it.
mahmoudyzadeh: All the best!
It has been one year. How are you doing now, dear?
mahmoudyzadeh This is very interesting. I have had this same thought pattern too which would curse etc inside my mind.
If your ego is anything like mine, then IT is probably the one suggesting that it feels like the early stages of schizophrenia LOL
Also know that you can always choose to see the origin of the thought. Is the thouhgt yours in the first place? Probably it isn't. No reason to choose terrible thoughts. So you could return it to where it came from. We are not children anymore who like a sponge suck up every word people tell us. We should learn to be adults who see, hey, that is not my thought but my fathers/mothers/brothers/sisters/teachers/partners words or who ever had an strong influence in our lifes. Practise saying this often: I did not choose this thought so return to sender, bye, bye.
remember that you ALWAYS have a choice in choosing whether to believe in negative thoughts. Do not let them bring you down, whether you're having a conversation with your own thoughts or someone telling you a bad thought.
A strategy whenever I have anxiety or worry of any kind is I remind myself that fear is nothing. Its pointless. And it disappears.
This sums me up pretty accurately. It's difficult for me to relate and interact with people socially, which makes me feel isolated and lonely; therefore I (the ego) tell myself that I must be weird, strange or ugly, which is why people dislike me, or dislike interacting with me. In fact it may just be that my overcautious ego is stifling my energy. 😔
I am very Grateful Mr. Tolle stepped up and has shared with others these words and experiences the same as any musician would do with their music or as Gandhi did or Buddha did in their own way. These things passed on from others has made a radical positive difference in my life and many others around me. I want to exercise the same courage and humility to be able to pass on my messages/music to others as well & not have to feel perfect to do so. To make at least some small positive difference.
thank you so much Eachart Tolle , listening to you has changed my life and the way I look at things, now it all makes sense. my life will never be the same
I've read several of his books and often refer back to them every now and then. I think the man is brilliant and what he has to say here is so important. If you're new to Eckhart Tolle, start with the Power of Now, it will help before you watch a video like this one. I had to go back and read some things a few times over until it made sense to me, but I had some *wow* moments and I feel like I am living a better life today because of that book.
Very beautiful video. I'm going to explore the others on your channel now. I've struggled with accepting the fact that my thoughts aren't actually me. I understand where this point is coming from, but I have yet to put it in practice. I am going to break free eventually though :)
Iv been practicing inner body awareness for a week, concentrating on my body aliveness totally with no thoughts and i have just been feeling peaceful and relaxed which is all i expected, but when i was driving yesterday something in my minds perception changed drastically,i felt i was perfectly still and only everything else was moving,my destination while driving was coming towards me,i was not travelling to it!!
This guy helps with my depersonalization and anxiety disorders
Those with extreme egos are what one would consider a 'know-it-all', they both project and view everything according to their belief system and they are very rarely wrong in their eyes because they choose what to reject and accept based on their own perception, meaning they are sincerely closed-minded and trapped by their thoughts. With that in mind, it would depend upon the person's belief system whether they felt they could teach a less egotistic person their beliefs, or felt superior to them.
This man changed my life. I can point the date: 13th of January 2010. That's when I first heard the idea of the ego as a separate thing. That I was not my ego - not the voice in my head. So simple, so powerful! I knew then that my life had changed. I knew it! But he said it. That's the beauty of Mr. Tolle. He points out the things we know, but have forgotten or overlooked. And in a modern setting.
I believe the ego is what separates the true self from the singularity (the collective consciousness). I've done ayahuasca and was shown the ego keeps us separated from the divine truth, we are all God. The body (everything) is the temple the spirit of God lives in. We are God experiencing itself through many view points, collecting experiences in order to enjoy the the world God created.
Thank you Eckhart, with your advices, your
life philosophy I am becoming happy and happier with the simplicity of truth life. I call you “Peace Revolutionary Being”.
I live spontaneously & communicate spontaneously with people who enjoy my presence. What my essence is can not be spoken or written with words.
Thanks to my son Markus who introduced me to you. Namaste Eckhart.
I'm truly Thankful for this Beautiful Spirit coming into my life... Thank you...
We people actually make only ONE "mistake" in our lives, and we do that the entire day: we believe what we think. bringing consciousness to your thoughts or even better having communications about them with people who can also bring consciousness is the current, necesary and inevitable step in the evolution of our planet.
thanks Eckhart!
a few words from tolle and other like him surpass most self help books. his nod, smile, and laugh just make me feel great :)
Eckhart tolle, you are a beautiful person to watch speak, you project such a kind and peaceful energy, you are truly glorious and fascinating. God Bless you and thank you for your wisdom.
Who ever doesn't love Eckhart is nuts. LOL He is so beautiful and soothing.
a man with a great wisdom for sure... most people don't see other people as they are but they see them as they are.. i guess that's true
What a great teacher.
You are such an inspiration...so clear and simply stated. Thank you, Rita
Awake and in flight, what a beautiful sight; to be free in God's hand, again.
I think it means we pick up and store these negative thoughts via the filter of the ego (because it helps define who we are, which the ego is constantly trying to do). We perceive an event, which in reality is neither good or bad, but our mind or ego, defines it as negative. The event is actually neutral, it is the ego, through the need to define things, which perceives the event as negative.
This is so true that thoughts create energy and manifesting reality.
Yes, thinking thoughts are not the problem it is the negativity that you attach to which your are to see, acknowledge where they came from to let them go. I practiced doing this through a negative childhood. But more importantly in 1975 I was 19 while traveling on the High Speed Line into Philadelphia, I saw just how it was my 'job' to exorcise the infiltrating negative thoughts that my father and the environment I was living was dumping on me and would process every morning riding the train.
The critical thing is learning how to break the cycle of thoughts.
The reason Eckhart Tolle is so successful is because he has literally helped changed people's lives for the better, which means that his teachings rprovide something that mainstream psychology/psychiatry hasn't provided to satisfy their clients' needs.
beautiful words, peace and love to all my brothers and sisters :)
I think people with anxiety, especially public anxiety and depression related problems could definitely take something from this, the veil view of the world in which he spoke about was so true and also the mind generated problems-all fueled from believing our thoughts and identifying with them. So simple yet you need someone to tell this to you!
You are IDENTIFYING with your experience, which is one of the things Eckhart warns people of. YOU are not your experiences. You HAVE experiences. And when you change what you believe about things (and/or yourself) your experiences also change But even so, YOU still experience, but are still not what you experience.
All thoughts whether good or bad eventually create suffering.Thoughts create the ego and then the ego enventually create suffering.
So self-Liberating, dont identify with thoughts= total Freedom.
thank you very much.
perfectionism and high idealism rule my life, i hope to one day escape from those shackles!
As the audience listens intently, most if not all, only comprehend a small segment of understanding! Although what ET is saying is truthful, the actual wanting to understand fully is impossible, when heard initially! Because our ability to immediately recognize his insight is to much information, to take on board! This is the same with all truthful teaching! Enjoyable listening but only partially helpful? We need people like ET to guide us beyond doubt !
One of my favourite videos of him 💖
A powerful one": "you are not the thought you are the awareness"
What a beautiful soul.
Thank you so very much
Even the idea of "self" is a thought. All experience is based on knowledge. What's an ego? It's just a word. "You" are nothing more than a collection of memories, knowledge, experiences based upon knowledge & interpreted through the filter of that knowlege, that includes, education, culture, indoctrination, family, societal values, etc. Even the slightest thought appears to be separation & thus comes loneliness, emptiness, duality, fear, and then the inventions of spirit, gods, after life, etc.
Such an excellent description of thought and ego !!!
I understand what Eckhart is talking about, because I have began to experience it myself. The difference between Eckhart's teachings and a concept is that a concept relies on empirical evidence and further analytical thought -- as is the case with philosophy. When you enter a state of being that is conscious awareness, or gnosis to use the Gnostic term, you quite often find that the correct answer about a situation comes to you without any thinking at all.
i always feel good after listening to mr Tolle.
What a great perspective on quieting the mind...
Thanks for this. The ego is very important in the way we operate. It's necessary to control it.
Such a wonderful teacher!
wonderful and deep video. this is the best educational and instructional videos I have ever watched. wonderful job
It starts from outside, but the mind saves it and repeats it and strengthens it. The source is outside but we cultivate them ourselves.
First time listening to him and about this information of physcology and its very mind bending
A Wise spiritual being, very distinct
My ego kept me up all night arguing with himself about whether awareness was just another layer in The Matrix...er, I mean another layer of the ego talking. Thanks a lot. :)
JoyfulUniter then you didn't got the message..
I don't understand the English pronounce very well, but Eckhart speaking makes it easy to do, probably the attention he gives to the words makes his pronounce sounds soft to the ears; I accompany. Very good teaching!
You are the awareness of your thoughts not the identification of the past. Simply you are labelling yourself.
I love him.
If you want to not only understand ego and get past it and move into a higher state of cognitive awareness I highly recommend The Evolution of Consciousness series of books by Endall Beall. I found these books on Amazon and I'm glad I did. The ego is a program that overlays human consciousness and keeps us all enslaved under a limited world of perceptions. There is a great difference between ego identity and spiritual self identity.
manifestation, law of attraction, the glue effect, persistence and lack of knowledge.
A DEADLY COMBINATION
Even though I understand these concepts, even now I struggle to understand how to stop identifying as my thoughts, as ego. What are we if not a collection of thoughts being expressed through a physical body? Without ego we're simply an objective observer, is that it?
As Eckhart Tolle says: thoughts are just the content of your awareness. You are not what you watch, you are the watcher. Thus you need to stop identifying with your inner TV program. Ideally you switch off the TV set altogether to view reality as it is.
I am an observer and a doer, in this moment.
The doing includes generating thought and expressing myself.
The memory, judgements and plans about what happens in my life is part of my ego.
Without an ego, I would not know who I am or what I am doing.
Survival would be very tenuous.
So honestly, I don't know how a I could live without a healthy ego.
But my ego has caused most of my problems in life, I believe.
It can induce anxiety, depression, anger and other bad things.
These feelings accompany the thoughts that the ego is processing.
What was missing was the understanding that those negative emotions are signals.
They were telling me and continue to tell me to wake up.
I don't need to dwell on negative thoughts
What I think about is a choice I can make.
You are the witness the all providing witness to stop identifimg with your thoughts you must practice self awareness self knowledge when you have a thought just observe it but do not act upon it. Do this every day and then you will become stronger than your mind mater's the mind of the mind will master you.
Truth
Will set you free
The truth it’s a look like a lie
Don’t believe it
Yet it’s not a lie It’s a matrix
It IS not you , But pain makes it real adding pain of losing desires
So more pain you have more you are involved in this game (( or reality ))
Fear makes it double plus humiliation
???!!!!!!! So to gain avoid the pain
By ....... ...... nothing............ slightly thin 1 mm desire will make pain catches you
Aka, it is not the event that causes the negative thought, but us, and our perception and labeling of the event that create the negative thought.
all pessimism is created by self
no matter how bad your day is - you chose to think it was bad
it make sense being attached to nothing ;) there is great freedom in this awareness thank you a treasure!
that's a very deep thought. imagine that the I AM that you and all living things are in their essence, is just another ego which is in a much bigger organism. in the universe or something
Thanks for sharing this video. I've been looking into many talks about finding purpose and defining who I am, etc. All with the same conclusion that if I want to do something or end up in a certain situation I must believe it is possible. It starts with not being afraid and trying with a positive mindset. I have found things I once thought impossible are only efforts away. If there is failure, I am honest with myself and analyze what I have gained/loss and what I'll do to reach my goals
Eckhart, you are a beautiful man.
Thank you.....
The majority of the time though, the extreme ego (its thoughts) always feels superior to those of a more modest, humble stature and selfless approach to life, because the ego is deeply selfish in regards to the image it identifies itself with.
We just need to follow his teachings and the world will change in time..And it will take time due the amount of unconscious people. There are more then just Eckhart, and the beauty is that they all have one and the same target which is to change unconsciousness into consciousness....We change ourselves with our thoughts-but we also affect everything around us by doing that....:-)
I finally found the guy who speaks in thousands of YT videos that I thought were made with text-to-speach software.
All this concepts are getting in your way to trully experience your life. Just live your life, man!!!
+Beck Bat What are you talking about? It's the ego that bets in the way of people's lives.
Space. The Brighter the mind, the larger space we must reserve. It will really take sometime to identify where the thoughts come from, but if we do we can have more space.
Beautiful things always happen to me! Every day!
Still in Ego...
Very good! This guy is switched on!
thank you this a good explanation of what to do with the ego and thoughts
People need to know that he is popular and well known to believe him! They are not pleased only by listening to him without any prejudice to see if they agree or not but of course thoughts are present to most people and this means that Ego is present!
If such a sweeping generalisation was only true, then yes. It's pretty pretentious to assume it is, though.
