self esteem means "Selbstbewusstsein" in german. It literally translates into "self conciousness". When you are concious aka present while walking or talking to people, there will be no room left for thoughts that you are making up based on previous experiences and you are confident at that moment. That's what I figured out for me at least.

I listen to him daily. I know I'm not being present when I think to myself, 'I wish I discovered him sooner.' But- I am grateful for his teachings and the changes in me. I am already starting to share these teachings with my Daughter, she is 4. Obviously she will never learn these things in School.

at around 6:00 minute Eckhart mentioned a pianist that can't play anymore and funny enough, that is exactly what happened to me, except, i'm a drummer. And indeed, still, 2 years after not playing, i still don't know who i am and what is my purpose and from time to time thoughts come up and stuff like that.. so.. yeah, that is pretty scary, but i'm really glad that it happened to me, because it was needed. And i don't say that because i want to make myself feel better, i honestly can feel that. I had most profound insights and spiritual breakthroughs because of that.. so, all is well..

I'm not sure what your diagnosis was as far as pain and I'm glad on some level it brought you some kind of spiritual clarity. I am a drummer and experienced some pain issues and I got into the work of dr. John Sarno. I am 61 years old I work out as much as I want I still play and I have no pain. This is something I feel everyone should investigate because these mind-body disorders are taking over our society. Don't take my word for it investigate it for yourself and see whether it works for you. It definitely works for me!

I was a sucessful computer programmer at the age of 24, had almost triple digget yearly income. But then God showed me his plan, and I lost my health and everything I had. Including my girlfriend. I was mad. I wanted answers. I was in hell. Then an Angle from heaven came to help me transend past the physical. Showed me beauty I knew was there my entire life and I had forgotten. My Ego was seen clearly, only a dreamlike representation of who I was. I then saw myself as meer creation of God himself and how beautiful I really was. How beatiful we all are. I look at myself different now, Material things mean nothing to me anymore. I have removed those people from my life and I pray for them. I live a slow and peacful life now. And find beauty in helping others escape themselves. Anywas rock on Echart!

I've had a bad habit of comparing who i am to other people and it destroyed my self esteem. This started when I was TRYING to have high self esteem. TRYING to have an ego by TRYING to be a particular person. Tolle teaches me that I just need to be.. just be.. and acknowledge presence and unidentify with the beastly ego that never feels good enough. I actually feel closer to normal now even though im realizing how different i am from people around me. individuality = great self esteem.

      I also found that funny.
I think almost everyone knows someone like this.
And most of us have probably done it ourselves at some point.
Is it just their ego protecting their sense of self-esteem? "Oh I did that in 10 minutes" "I ate two of them" "Oh I slept one hour tonight"
And even in conversation, this person will point out that he's somehow better than someone else.
"X did that in 30 minutes, I do that in 15 minutes"
"I stayed to help him, every other person was just driving past him"
It's always if they're seeking validation instead of focusing on having a genuinely interesting conversation.

I too still have anxiety issues. Embrace the anxiety, be there for it. Everything is fine and theres nothing you can do about it lol :) There's nothing to fear and no business to take care of in terms of enlightenment. Let it all be! Thoughts, anxiety... It is all alright. I think accepting what we label as bad feelings or bad results is the first (and maybe only) step for anxious people. It's all about letting go of being like "oh no, this is bad, im doing this wrong, i shouldnt feel this..."

Humour is something that lies deep within us all and connects us, which is the deeper truth they're getting at after all.

I am an observer and a doer, in this moment.
The doing includes generating thoughts and ideas and expressing myself through language and other means.
The memories, judgements and plans about what goes on in my life is the business of my ego.
These are only ideas which exist in my brain, and do not constitute reality.
There is also the current feeling I may have about myself which depends on recent good or bad events, which I would call self esteem.
This can be of a very superficial nature but also includes my deepest sense of self worth.
Without an ego, I would not know who I am or what I am doing.
    Survival would be very tenuous.
So honestly, I don't know how a I could live without a healthy ego.
But my ego has caused most of my problems in life, I believe.
It can induce anxiety, depression, anger, jealousy and other forms of negativity.
These feelings accompany the thoughts that the ego is processing.
It usually involves judgement of some sort involving right and wrong.
By judging you are placing yourself above creation as if you had no part in creating it.
To be free of ego, you cannot be judging anything, especially yourself.
It is total acceptance of reality as it is.
Much of what concerns the ego is fear based, which is a great waste of mental energy.
I think the key factor is not self esteem, but pride:
The feeling of being superior or inferior to other people, which is simply not true.
It's correct to feel equal to others. This is real and leads to self esteem and a healthy ego.
What was missing for me was the understanding that those negative emotions are signals.
They were telling me and continue to tell me to wake up.
I am doing this to myself.
I don't need to dwell on negative, judgemental, angry thoughts.
What I think about is a choice I can make.
I choose to make my imagination a happy, purposeful place.
The question you need to ask is: who is observing and doing?
    Whose ego is this, exactly?
You shouldn't identify with your thoughts, you only created the thoughts and they will change.
The thoughts inform you about you.
You can get onto the wrong track, so to speak, but you can get back on track if you are aware.
You will always be you, whatever you think.
The physical world of form is our direct connection with the 'divine'.
Being in the moment means feeling, sensing, doing.
Your most direct connection with God is in eyes of the person or creature before you.

Having researched self-esteem quite extensively. I think different people have a different perception of what self esteem is. Healthy self esteem to me is someone who is connected to an aspect to their trueself independent of what they have externally. You could call this a deep sense of worth. You don't have to be deeply spiritual to have this connection to yourself.

How High Can You Fly, yes, I totally agree. Self Esteem to me is having a deep sense of worth. A musician friend of mine asked me a very profound question 24 years ago: "Do I respect myself". It was that question that made me pack my bags and leave my boyfriend and the city I live in. I don't know that much about Eckhart's views, but so far he never touched on the topic of Narcissism, Sociopaths and how to protect yourself.

A healthy sef-esteem should comes from yourself, and not by comparing to others. When you are able to allow youself to compare your present self from your past self, you have total control of who you can be, and what path you want to take, therefore, you have the choice to stay as you are, or to be a greater version of yourself (which is the goal of everyone). Others can help you being it, and indirectly improve your self-estem, but it is in our power to shows the world what we really are, by taking action by ourself, by uplifting our self-esteem by ourself. The Ego is good and necessary in this world, but it shouldn't be compared or faced to a other, that's where all the bad happens.

Thanks eckhart for being an inspiration of our potential!- Blessings

This is where Tolle goes wrong. Psychological research shows that children who grew up in loving families have a much easier task with building relationships. Low self esteem is more about judging yourself than judging others. You judge yourself because you don't feel worth beeing loved. Most people with low self esteem have no wish of being superior, they only want to feel part of the community, be like everyone else. An extreme case of what can happen with children who don't get enough human touch, is the orphans in eastern european countries. Who twitch as if they were hit when somebody touches them.

Andreas Petersson yes but eventually it's not enough. I have felt that myself. Nothing is necessarily going wrong in your life but you still feel emptiness and you're not sure why you aren't satisfied. He is only saying that the "self" you esteem is usually not the real you. He is saying don't derive your identity on things that are ultimately tangible and may fail you at some point.

A high self esteem will at least be self harming and cause frustrations. And for the most, a high self esteem will lead to a high ego; which is when your high self esteem negatively affects the way you see others and deal with them.
A high ego implies a high self esteem. But a high self esteem does not necessarily imply a high ego.

I was watching a performance of STOMP! a few years ago with some friends. This performance consisted of a lot of weird "mime", with action, dancing, rhythm, creative drumming & pounding and noise-making, and humor.
For example, one scene involved four people sitting at the break table at work, not talking, reading the newspaper. One person shook and folded their paper, continuing to read. Then another, Soon a cacophony of paper-shaking rhythms. Superb.
But there was ANOTHER part that made me laugh so hard that "ME" vanished for a brief few seconds. All that existed for those three or five seconds was the performance and my sudden awareness of a "joke that topped a joke", plus uproarious uncontrollable laughter existed, but not "ME laughing". The scene began with a few people hopping all around the stage inside wooden boxes. Clomp clomp clomp. It ended with ... I won't explain, because it was an surprise twist that was hilarious, esp to my Self & my story. It was about naïveté plus ego. Me vanished from existence until two people turned around and looked at "me" laughing, and I reflexively felt just a "twinge" of embarrassment and with that self-awareness, ME popped back in to existence.
I believe we NEED a "Self" to function in the world, in society, in human existence, most of the time, but it need not be a crushing painful ill-fitting Self. Tao: "The shoe that is well-fitting is unthought of by the wearer." Now I understand that.

I wish i had heard this fifty years ago i as a child was struggling with identifying with a form i felt that it was not right but everything and everyone expected that to be what i did i never got clear about what was happening and so i rebelled against all expectation and stubbornly did my own thing which set me apart and isolated me psychologically from everyone else i ended up not reallly finding anything that really made me happy although quantum physics had a very intense draw on me i did not want to be identified as scientist cause then i would have to be responsible for living up to that expectation which wasnt difficult i just did not want to be limited by a defining term that sets me into a group that is not really free to pursue their own ideas it has always made me wonder if something was wrong with me intrinsic or i just was faulty in some way now Eckhart explains it and i now can see that i just instinctively knew that identifying with my thoughts was a way to be trappped in a unhealthy condition mainly an egoic self wow i am glad i now can move on thankyou Eckhart for being a vehicle for truth 😘 i love you

ever since i first heard of eckhart tolle and saw him on youtube, ive wanted to meet him. there are so many things i could accomplish if i understood things the way he understands them. its not a yearn for knowlege, though i do happen to have that as well (a yearn for knowlege), i just wish i could understand what he understands and be able to awaken myself spiritually so i can understand what this thing we call the world really has to offer once you see it through different eyes, if you will

Eckhart Tolle is a gift from God himself! There are many "spiritual teachers" on RUclips channels (I have watched and listened to many of them), but none of them "have come home" as Eckhart has. You can sense this in him. I am not judging, just recognizing the difference. It is obvious that Eckhart Tolle´s words no longer come from his mind, (or from the book he has read). His words come from a much deeper source. He truly lives as he teaches and he is what he "preaches" And; he is SO FUNNY, too! Love you, Eckhart!

Would the majority of great inventors have been motivated without the ego? I agree that it ultimately leads to the pain associated with the false self, but as a species our leaps forward in technology and knowledge are many times the result of the ego. Many of these "leaps forward" have created destruction and pain, again due to the ego of many powerful men, but we have also created medicine, built bridges, airplanes, and space shuttles all of which had some component or ego involved.

I don't know if your problem has been overcome since it was 3 months ago, I'm guessing probably not. The trick is not to 'stop' thinking, no-one can do that. It is prescribed in meditation occasionally that way to show the futility of trying. The trick is to be aware of all the thoughts just running along as usual and *then* try to be aware of *what* is aware of the thoughts.
    I hope this helps.

Self-Esteem is what pacifies & stabilizes the Ego. Ego is the need to project your image & make existence in your likeness...usually the image, but sometimes also the principle. It depends on how insightful you are & whether or not you're closer to a hard-materialist or a hard-spiritualist. The idea of GOD is also very egoic, but God's Love can improve your self-esteem through the reaffirmation of your destiny. God helps people stop comparing themselves to others, which is the end of "competition" with the exception of the paradigm of good vs evil, where evil initiates the "competition". Utilitarianism is the opposite of Ego, because Ego by itself is useless, except for the fact that you need to express yourself & be validated. Sadly, most people don't understand that HELPING PEOPLE is the best way to serve your ego. Over the years, you experience different types of pain to your soul that diminish you & your drive. This is partly manifested in your body, but its also about how you hold false or situationally unnecessary ideas because of the dogma you have developed over your life. Dogma is unavoidable, but it serves the function of being your ETHOS, which is the essence of your character. PATHOS is the projection of this essence. LOGOS is the form which the essence takes.

Naturally, I'm happy this works for many people. I just think it's dangerous. You'll say that's my ego. I've struggled plenty with my existence, but in that time at least I felt something. Pain, sadness, I appreciated the happy moments, I enjoyed the rollercoaster. I did what you said. And I feel nothing, just numbness. What's more, I don't see the point in anything anymore. If emotions are pointless, if we everything is an illusion, if nothing matters, then why not just end it now? If the love I felt for people throughout my life, including the good times and the heartaches, is all my ego and not really me, then what is the point in going on? I know that you actually write that you should avoid relationships. What about our biological evolutionary urge to procreate? What about the chemical changes that happen in our mind when we see certain things, such as an attractive potential mate? Is that not really us, too? Are we allowed hobbies? Why do we come on RUclips, if everything is an illusion and nothing will give us happiness except the now? I find it so terrifying. I thought I loved my family, I thought I loved a girl. But I don't. I have nothing. My past is not me. Nothing is me. Apart from the present. So day to day what am I to do? Just enjoy the present you will say. What about the joy we are supposed to feel from the present, is that real? Sorry, I promise I'm not trolling. I just find everything you say both enlightening but terrifying at the same time. I'm the lowest I've ever been right now and I came to you for help.

When someone has a high self esteem or a low self esteem both are directly connected to the formative years of our body/form. This 0-7 years is divided between the various stages of development whereas if the body is not formed properly 0-3 then the inflated ego works against the body to bring the person into a lower state of self. When the body is 3-7 years of age the pregenital and genital stages that aren't formed properly creates the inflated ego that looks to go upward of the body.

As he has described in his teachings, suffering burns up the ego. As we approach the event horizon in humanity, the collective suffering will begin to burn up the weaker egos as they exist in children, so that the ego cannot form at all. So in essence our collective suffering creates children without the ability to suffer and with the absence of a pain body (or original sin as described in Christian dogma).

Everything we think we know about ourselves is merely an illusion projected by the ego. People often say "well it is too difficult to remove your ego from your true self" People need to understand that there is nothing to let go of. If the ego does not exist how can you possibly let go of it.

Dear Zyrayel, I don't know if Eckhart will help ... of course reading his books and listening to his talks may be helpful But I sense that you have read and do listen, since you posted here. It does help to have someone to 'study' with, to reflect back to you the confusions you are unable to see on your own. (If we were meant to do it all alone, there wouldn't be so many of us here.) This is the work I do and I would happy to help you look at why the sadness and disappointments hurt. Call me.

But if I have a negative self image, why bother trying to achieve healthy self-esteem first in order to transcend it? Because the "high self image" would just trap me in the "dream world" which Eckhart just said is more difficult to transcend than the suffering that comes from from having low self esteem. However, I find that the Ego drive in me to experince high self esteem is so strong that maybe in my case I do need to have to exerience in order to let it go, after all how can we surrender that which we do not hold? The risk of attachment is there and also hopefully the choice to choose consciousness. But it seems that I cannot try to go the path of "no-self" AND the path of "relative high self esteem" at the same time. You can't serve two masters, so I must choose. High self esteem to eventually transcend or go straight from suffering of low self esteem to no-self. Would love o hear from others on this.

You took the words right out of my mouth Dawn Solomon.
I am asking myself this question too now that it seems that I got more concious than a year ago but still not in the way of pure Presence, no Self.
It's more like a deeper understanding of the "Problem" which includes the Realisation that on the deepest Level there is no Problem, though I'm not able to live it.
So "I've been reaching for high self esteem" for some time now and i feel the same way. I am at a Level where I think that having the self esteem i always reached for is not enough, at least one essential Level below what Eckhart teaches.
THOUGH: I now it is possible to have high "healthy" self esteem indepentently from external circumstances!
I also feel more driven towards the high self esteem...
But i think it dosent have to be a detour. When you get more concious about what you're doing wrong right now, so that you drain yourself from self esteem, you bring more presence into your life either.
      But very difficult question.

in my experience low self esteem and high self esteem are the same. Ive always struggled with being in both states, always thinking i was better than everyone and at the same time worse than everyone. until i started practicing stillness and watching my thoughts there was really no difference in the suffering i was experiencing from both extremes.i eventually came to a point where i watched my thoughts and started realizing that they were not who i was. I am just me, im not better or worse than anyone. sometimes i can even feel that i am connected to everyone else, and thats more proof that we are all essentually the same. we are all connected to the same power source.

dear Huaba24 and Dawn Solomon.. good questions I asked them all my life now at48 yrs of age it came slowly to my senses what he means. OK..How do i put it in easy way to you.. Kids ...you know how they dont take things too personally because they are more presence than person. ok so any thought about how good or bad we are or striving to achieve anything is a way for ego to grow. When we notice that we can stop and say wow ..theres awareness of ego..that moment you are in No self or if you catch youself lost in smelling the rosses or hugging someone that is moment of no self..they kind of come when we let go.
I tried letting go over few years and it feels a bit like loosing ground but No self gets bigger and bigger ..with it love ..compassion..selfless service and joy established in my daylie life more and more..so much that I can hear my partner swearing at me and its like listening to the rain falling, nothing personal ..He just had to ofload daylie stress from work.
ok for now just watch yourself as if you were another person. good luck

I simply let go of trying to feel better and guess what taraaaa..I feel fantastic in that moment.
Of course it comes back the old habit but soon Im in awareness saying Ok drop it all relax and dont chase anything ,,nothing.. what a freedom when you dont have to be certain way .neither good no better..no worse just free(little bit like dont care..not quite but similar)..wooow.. keep in touch ..Love you guys

The way I understood it superficial happiness is different than high self-esteem. High self-esteem comes from doing something well and identifying with it- ie mastering a craft, being an expert in a skill or subject, and/or knowing that you can accomplish things. Superficial happiness is more fantasy-like; It's happiness in acquiring objects and accomplishments because of who it makes them appear to be. :)

Present moment awareness means. .awareness about awareness. .
