That bus has a 4 link suspension attaching the drive axle to the frame! I thought they only put those on race cars…;0) Nice job guys. You are a blessing.
Got a little arachnophobia going on here, but having experienced a spider falling on me while working on my own car, I don't blame you for being cautious. Whoever "repaired" that damaged spindle should be ashamed of themselves. I'm looking forward to the liquid nitrogen treatment, I have only heard of it, but only watched what happens via RUclips science videos. Practical application in bus repair ought to be interesting 👍
I haven’t seen this spindle removal technique. I was trying to figure out what was going on with cylinder liner. Cool technique. Good on the safety glasses Scott.
One time while working on my Camaro a black widow spider dropped down onto my forearm. I shrieked like a little girl and ran inside, got a can of raid and learned a valuable lesson. If you spray an entire can under the hood around the wheel wells and anywhere else you can reach under the car it creates a fog that last about two hours. After it settles you may then feel more secure returning to work.😂😂
That spider 🕷️is probably glad to get off that death trap bus and has now taken up more comfortable residence in your nice warm shop… most likely making babies!!!! 😳
What a PITA job. Looks like the manufacturer never intended that shaft to come out. The wheel bearing monsters clearly decided it was better not to replace it and after the work you guys have put in you can see why they did what they did.
The old construction company I used to work for had an excavator being repaired that had a bad kingpin in one of the boom arms at the pivot point at the bucket. It was worn out so bad they had to do a rebore on the kingpin hole in the arm. I can see why they charge a lot. Took them about a full 8 hour day to re-weld the inside of the boom hole and rebore to the correct size to fit the new pin. It is a really cool process to see.
Had a similar problem here in the uk with my Setra f/n/side axle ,the bearings had siezed, the previous owner had welded it up and the bearings were loose making a noticeable wobble. Had to hav a new stub axle from Germany at a cost of £1450 !
cooling and heating both.. ive had things stuck on before and used a torch to heat the outer part then quickly "used a subtance known to get very cold when it evaporates" and sprayed as liquid on the inner part and it popped loose.. never done a spindle like this.. when heating and cooling both you have to have the tools ready to go because the heat transfer between metal parts is rather quick so it has to be a shock type of thing where you create a temperature differential.. ive never seen an actual soaker.. im interested to see how that goes.. tite reach!! I really couldve use one of those working on one of my busses last year!!! looks like im about to go shopping :)
Nice spider!!!.......When I was working and found spider webs (Black Widow webs) I would soak the whole web area with carb or brake cleaner, and walk away for awhile before putting my hands anywhere near the area!!! So far, Black Widow "0", me, killed many of them!!
That's not a spider ... _that's_ a spider! It looks like a fairly average sized huntsman. They're quite common in Australia. Didn't know they are also found in the USA.
Just crawl under there and don't worry about it. The worst that could happen is you get spidey powers and save the world and Mary Jane still won't like you.
Can you put the rear bolt partially back in and use a Porta-Power spreader between it and the frame while smacking/vibrating the spindle? Maybe do both pulling and pressing at same time.
if the spindle is bad anyway, BFH with puller pressure on it. cool the spindle itself and heat the housing. something like a liquid CO2 pipe freezer setup would probably work miracles on it. that can flash freeze/shock it. *edit: ok liquid nitrogen also works great, not sure the cost difference from CO2 to LN2.
Do you have a steel fab shop nearby. You need at least a 5/8 plate with a hole slightly bigger than the spindle threads. With 8 half inch or 3/4" bolt hole. A similar plate with a bigger hole to slip farther down the spindle to rest against a partial cylinder sleeve. Grade 8 bolts and nuts thru the outer plate pushing away from the inner plate 1/4 turn of each nut at a time. That should.
Hey guys I was wondering what that tool you used with the impact gun ( that off set tool) is? I have never seen one before and it sure looks handy. Thanks for the video,
It looks like people are seeing you as the last point of repair for really bad condition vehicles. That's not necessarily a good thing. These near disaster cases sure tie up your floor space for a long time and with the wheels off you can't even roll them temporarily out of the way while waiting on parts.
Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap is the thing. Affordable, effective, and obtainable in gallon jugs. It has enough peppermint to do deter the insects (and spiders), and they don't like the Soap aspect either (hard to crawl on). Ant infestation trails? Fergeddaboutit.
How does a bus with only 87,000 miles fall apart? My car has 150,000 and is in better shape. Does a spindle fall apart and need replacing at 50,000 miles? Incredible for buses that people claim to be built for 1,000,000 miles of highway use.
@@BusGreaseMonkey That is good to know as many people who advertise used Prevosts get a premium for lower mileage. The real question should be, how was the vehicle stored? Inside/outside, heated, etc.

Yes, it is cool. Tite-reach, Ha, going to add that to my wish- want list. Thank You
The rotor view with screwdriver showing cracks, i thought it was a tire sidewall at first. Lol
While you were looking all around the wheel well for the spider, it's running up the back of Scott's pantleg😆.

This bus is quite the saga so far…

That's not a spider. It's a face hugger from "Alien!"😁
I'm guessing the spider unassed the bus and went outside to hunt bugs.
@@johngaither9263 spider running loose in the shop now!

Last time I popped the hood on my CJ5 there was a snake laying on top of the engine
@MrThatnativeguy did you sell the cj5?
Unbelievable what they did too the spindle wow
Now we know why someone previously tried to fix the spindle on the cheap.
I haven’t seen this spindle removal technique. I was trying to figure out what was going on with cylinder liner. Cool technique. Good on the safety glasses Scott.
I'm scared to hold my soda because I'm afraid ill throw it across the room when that spider reappears for its closeup!
I was working in the wheel well and felt something on my neck…. Panic mode 10
Big time bug bomb over night inside outside ha

While watching you with this spindle, I noticed the bushing behind this spindle project.
That spindle must have been done by Billie Joe Bobs yeehaw bus repair.
looked like a Sunday AM major hangover repair and bus had to be down the road in a a few hours max.

Scary thought.. keep it to yourself ;)
I love watching you guys Scott
That bearing is so scary! Great video!
Detroit cylinder liner spacer - nice!
That Zep degreaser works on spiders too. 🕷🕸🕷🕸 😊
Wow, that spindle just doesn't wanna'. It's going to lose though. It just doesn't know it yet.

Watch Kurtis do that on his channel, Cutting Edge Engineering in Australia
Apparently, the motto of the last shop was 'Failure is an option!'
Thats a Fishing Spider. Harmless to humans. We have them up here in Iowa too. Pretty cool.
Great video 👍 If the rear bolt could have a grease nipple added and the rear chamber is sealed then use a grease gun to pop out the spindle 😊
To coin an Australian expression, Everything seems “Munted”.
Might be a good idea to get a piece of steel pipe for your puller apparatus. I'm guessing that liner is cast iron.

Bus owner's budget and mechanic determine quality of work.
“The only thing cheap about a bus is the owner” ;) one of my clients said that to me while we were working on his Scenicruiser. I laughed
That spider is somewhere! Hopefully all the ruckus it decided to go away permanently
Working on busses seems to concentrate all the worst aspects of working on vehicles and takes them to the next level.
Plot twist - The spider did the previous repairs.
This coach is definitely has a LOT more mileage than the odometer is showing. My bet this was an entertainer coach in its former life still stands.

A spindle washer against the aluminum blocks would have helped spread the load.

From the looks of the bearing and spindle i suspect this thing has a lot more miles then it shows.
Isn’t most of it completely shot???

Do you have any professional spider hunters in your area that would have large enough equipped to rid that bus from the spider 🕷

At "Liquid Nitrogen 'R Us", Natch! ... Air Liquide et al, actually.
use washers with grease inbetween the nut und the plates.you're losing to much because of the friction.

@c.a.mcneil7599 sitting a year is way worse than 100k miles a year.. now imagine it sitting for a decade
