  • Timelapse of Kiwirail's Northern Explorer train running from the Capital to Auckland. Trip concludes by returning from the Strand station to Westfield depot. Apologies for the lack of a techno soundtrack!
    Thanks heaps for the four drivers who took my camera along for the ride, especially the kind driver who posted it back to me! The train stopped at Marton for half an hour due to downed overhead - that was edited out.

    Excellent video, but wouldn’t it make sense to electrify the whole of the NIMT, so dual-voltage electric locomotives could be used and thus eliminating the use of diesel traction?

    • @sw6188
      @sw6188 Год назад +2

      It wouldn't take much to connect Pukekohe (which at the time of me typing this is having electrification extended to it from Papakura) to Hamilton. That would complete the system from Auckland to Palmerston North. Then it would just be a matter of electrifying between there and Waikanae and the entire NIMT would be electric. If the government is serious about reducing carbon emissions then it's a no brainer to extend the wires.

    Is there any change of time stamps showing us where the train was when? In the description or something, I mean. I'm from Christchurch and I'm not really familiar with the route north of the Kapiti Coast or south of Rangiriri.

    Not bad. It's just a bit too quick. Plus adding text as you pass through each town and city would have been a good idea. You could have also added some music to it but I'm well aware how difficult it is to find good music that fits a timelapse like this.

    Nice one. I did the journey South on the Silver Star sleeper in 1975, returning North on the Silver Fern. Beautiful country. Is there any reason why the Auckland -Wellington trains do not use Britomart?

    • @michaelbennet9146
      @michaelbennet9146  6 лет назад +3

      Mervyn Partin, apparently when all the Auckland trains were electrified the exhaust fans for removing diesel fumes in britomart were decommissioned.

    • @MervynPartin
      @MervynPartin 6 лет назад +3

      Thank you, Michael, for your prompt reply which completely answers my query. I visited Britomart on my visit to New Zealand in 2016 and was quite impressed with it so it seems a pity that the few remaining trains to and from Wellington cannot use it. Perhaps Kiwi Rail should reconsider their de-electrification plans on the North Island Main Trunk line and instead wire up the whole route! Thanks again....Mervyn Partin

    • @michaelbennet9146
      @michaelbennet9146  6 лет назад +2

      Mervyn Partin we've had a change of government here, so it looks like the main trunk will retain its electrification. Expansion however probably won't be on the cards for many years, although it appears that the Auckland wires may be stretched to Pukekohe

    • @MervynPartin
      @MervynPartin 6 лет назад

      Michael Bennet. That is good news. Over here in the UK, the electrification plans are in tatters! Regards, Mervyn

      @@michaelbennet9146 It boggles my mind how little electrification there is left to do on the NIMT yet how people drag their feet with the idea of finishing electrification. Glad to see the de-electrification plan fell apart though. There's plenty of dual voltage locomotives available (even second-hand) and having freight fully electric would save a ton of dosh.

    Is there any chance you could upload the entire video at its normal speed? I realize it would be 10 hours worth of file. Maybe you could do it as ten 1-hour instalments? I would love to see this at normal speed and I daresay many others would too.
