La Stupenda indeed - no one like her, although Caballe is almost equal! A once in a lifetime singer - a voice in a trillion - no one like her today. And a most charming, warm humane human being. Just a lovely, natural, beautiful person.

The greatest soprano I have ever experienced since my love of opera began some five years ago. Now in 2024, I listen to her ALWAYS and have, I think, come to know her fully through all the operas she has recorded, the recital discs and, thankfully, the many videos of opera performances and documentaries on Dame Joan like this one. Thank You.

This one is fantastic. I love the way she corrected herself when she made a mistake and the way her husband supported her seconds later. ruclips.net/video/8fryUJPrZIE/видео.html&pp=ygUWam9hbiBzdXRoZXJsYW5kIGNhbmFkYQ%3D%3D

At last, a documentary that really explains the Sutherland phenomenon and the sheer hugeness of her voice.

When I was very young and only a chorus singer I sang a production of Steven Sondheim's passion where the doctor in the production sang with Dame Joan in the late 1980s when he was very young and only a chorus singer. He described her as a "big girl scout"...and very approachable and kind.

Brings back fantastic memories of hearing and meeting her in 1980s. Some of the greatest evenings of music I ever enjoyed. We shall not see her like again. Many thanks.

She was certainly one of my favorites. An absolutely unique voice, never to be heard again. I saw her onstage in Hoffmann, Esclarmonde, Giovanni, Lucia, Puritans, Trovatore, and a few others. Some of those 1970s performances were before the advent of subtitles so, to be honest, I didn’t really understand what was going on. But I enjoyed it anyway. I also saw her recitals in Brooklyn and Buffalo, of all places, and had the opportunity to meet them twice backstage. To my surprise, and contrary to their PR, Bonynge was way more pleasant and friendly in conversation. Dame Joan seemed a little impatient with the public.

Yes, I thought Joan was rather imperious towards the end. All part of a carefully-cultivated image I suppose and she was La Stupenda after all.

      @@ahogbin2644 she probably was tired.
I caught her after a mid 80's Norma at the Liceo....she went and sat in the car and her hubby proceded to sign autographs for half an hour keeping her waiting!

Es natural, después de cada presentación uno quiere no hablar, descansar, y encima tener que atender un río de gente.

What a treat to watch!! Documents like this become very rare. Anyone know the name of the “cuckoo” aria at 35:15? I don’t think it’s in the description

GOOD LORD all that tacky bric a brac her camp husband littered the home with.
As Joan says 18:37 "a lot of it I can frankly do without!" 😂

While I love this video for the insights it gives us into Joan's life and career, I have to say that from a production point of view, it comes across as very roughly cobbled together in a disjointed fashion. For instance, we go from Joan's 1965 Australian tour straight back to London where she's recording a Wagner aria. I'm happy to see any footage about Joan but from an objective point of view, this is a very sloppy doco.

Greatest singer ever. I hate the Sidney opera house as a building. It's awful
