Chorus and principals on stage please : The making of Lakmé - Joan Sutherland
A co-production by Film Australia and the Australian Opera, this film of compelling interest to opera-lovers features throughout Australian stars Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge. We are taken behind the Sydney Opera House curtain to explore many of the preparations required to stage such an opera as "Lakmé". With shooting undertaken in Sydney and New York the film leaves a lively impression of the massive task of running an opera.

While I love this video for the insights it gives us into Joan's life and career, I have to say that from a production point of view, it comes across as very roughly cobbled together in a disjointed fashion. For instance, we go from Joan's 1965 Australian tour straight back to London where she's recording a Wagner aria. I'm happy to see any footage about Joan but from an objective point of view, this is a very sloppy doco.

Horne is consistently. She overhang the low notes anc it weighted her voice so that she lacked the higher partials to keep her voice ‘in tune’.

Sadly today Australian Opera once the world's third busiest repertory company with up to 17 operas a year in various state capitals, is just a musicals and potboilers company for tourists. Seems you can't attract a young audience now. Once we had these great local stars and some occasional imported stars. They were glory days.

Sutherland, Cotrubas, Krause, what a line up. Yes Joan could give a masterclass however no other human being, possibly in all history, has possessed such an extraordinary gift for negotiating the most fiendishly difficult coloratura without a hint of strain and hitting every note bang on. Absolutely extraordinary. I saw Cotrubas twice at Covent Garden, a gem of an artist with a great voice and the ability to act convincingly. Unfortunately never heard the wonderful Krause in a live performance.

She was such as nice person, just a regular person off stage. I don’t know if she had any diva about her back stage. But I’m certain, she like all great singers, would like things to be just so, and her way. I met her once at a signing. I asked her to sign a CD for my mother whose name was Beryl. She said excitedly, ‘oh my mother in laws name was Beryl too!’ When she handed the CD back she said ‘I hope your mother likes it. Say hello for me.’ Such a wonderful memory. Something small from her, but unforgettable for me. Later I was lucky enough to work as an usher at the Sydney Opera House and although she had retired by then she was often in the audience when Richard was conducting an opera, and I saw her then and also in the green room. She was the same humble person chatting away to colleagues and staff alike.

Although La Stupenda sounds glorious in recordings, it's a pale shadow of what she actually sounded like in the theater, live. First, the sound was enormous. And it didn't have that slightly whining quality that we hear in recordings. She was truly in a class by herself.

I am guessing that the very last aria was played and sung a half step lower than what Donizetti wrote. However, the key tone of the aria is therefore darker, more ominous, and ultimately more tragic, and we get to hear the last note sung up an octave by Joan Sutherland. It is very emotional. Just my opinion.

@@lastupendajoansutherland That's right. I forgot about how the original score was written. My preference got in the way of the facts. The Db key makes the aria sound very dark, tragic, and emotional, and I enjoy 'Anna Bolena' going out on a "high note."

That's a lovely irony. In Zeffirelli's original direction of Sutherland's debut in this role at CG in 1959, Lucia emerged from the murder with less blood than here smeared on her costume, and even that was considered by some critics be excessive and in poor taste. 😊

It makes me feel good that I had the same or very similar observations about the singers before they critiqued them. I am so thankful for my distinguished pedagogue Julie Freeman who taught me Bel Canto technique. I have gone in the direction of Broadway and Gospel music with it, but incorporating fine opera technique makes untold differences in vocal stamina, quality, health, and most of all, a whole new range of options to choose from when singing. I am a Verdi baritone, however with time and practice, over the years I have stretched my vocal mix up to producing tenor C5s all the way up to a G5. I own it to Bel Canto technique and all those who invested in me.

A the time I owned her first recording and a vocal score (which she autographed) so I can say with some authority there was not a single 16th note out of place! And the size of her voice soaring above the rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra! Indeed stupendous!
