The greatest soprano of the 20th Century in my opinion. My grandparents saw her on the opera stage 4 times in the 1980's which is why I've known all about her for the last 25 years.

The crazy architecture could be a visual metaphor for the inside of Lucia’s disordered mind. Or maybe there were generations of Ashtons in the family as bonkers as poor old Lucy, and some of them built the castle? In either case, Sutherland is mesmerizing here.

Even Joan's offstage singing fills the theatre!

A shame that Anson Austin's voice is such a technical mess. Yes, he can belt out the top notes, but the passaggio notes are often barked and rough, and interrupt his legato phrasing above the staff.

Very grateful for this rarity. I think my parents attended this concert (they were great fans, and went to everything of Sutherland’s in Sydney, & I recall them mentioning a recital accompanied by her husband). Risking overstaying my welcome: any chance of a list of the songs and arias performed at this recital? My mother told me she heard Sutherland sing Ah! Non credea mirarti in recital, and this might be the occasion.

She is and has always been a vocal phenomenon that is impossible to describe!!!

She is in fine voice here, fresh and solid as a rock. The acoustic gives a sense of how her voice fills the hall effortlessly even in quieter moments. ❤

i still don't understand why she transposed the whole thing down instead of just doing it in the original key and omitting the optional! final high note bc she obviously still has the high tessitura to do it in the original key. maybe fans expected the trademark sutherland epic final high note so even though she wasn't comfortable singing high Ebs anymore she still had to avoid disappointing the fans, idk

She is the greatest singer ever to have walked the earth. When I was 17 a bought out of curiosity an opera CD. It happened to be her Traviatta with Bergonzi. I was instantly transported to another dimension. I absolutely adore her. Thank you for all that you have given us! ❤

The conductor is a maniac!! The tempos are outrageous....... Where's the Fire ??? Poor singers. How they worked to keep up with the orchestra. 😊

A lot of people have criticised Sutherland's Violetta for not being expressive enough or for her looking too healthy. Well, that may be, but as opposed to a lot of the sopranos taking on the role within recent decades, Sutherland had both the weight and the ease at the top to do this role justice, not to mention a sufficiently advanced technique to toss of the fioritura of the first act. Netrebko, Damrau and all the others simply can't match her!
