You're very lucky. I have her autobiography autographed as well as an autographed b&w photo of her from her '82 Met "Lucia." Without question among my most valuable possessions.
i met her a couple of times. she was so respectful of her fans. wonderfully down to earth and what i remember most was her luminous skin.

The very greatest ever recorded; probably the greatest in the history of singing.
How can anyone still insist that Sutherland was "boring", "dull" or "inexpressive" after listening to this selection of extremely varied and difficult repertory sung with all power, energy and fearlessness you could ask for? Only an incurable bias could explain that, hehehe. She was absolutey magnificent and, in some roles, almost flawless in her prime!

The fact that Birgit Nilsson was furious that Sutherland and London records had dared to record Turandot with Sutherland is testimony to the greatness of her voice and interpretive abilities. It is unfortunate that she decided too soon to stop singing with great conductors and began demanding the second rate Bonynge for her performances. Listen to anything that she recorded with another conductor and then with Bonynge and you will hear how much better she sang with truly great conductors.
Bonynge isn’t second rate. He’s top drawer. His Lucrezia Borgia (1977) is majestic and so is his Lucia di Lammermoor (1971). He knew voices better than anyone and it’s thanks to *HIM* that we got to enjoy Sutherland as a historic dramatic coloratura to begin with.

At her prime there was no one who could touch her. Such purity of tone and agility! I am aware of criticisms that her diction was 'mushy' and I would agree, but it depends on what stage of her career we are talking about.
Personally speaking I find that a minor criticism - what matters most, for me, is the music - so I don't care about the words, ultimately it's about the notes written by the composer. If you disregard the words (I don't understand Italian anyway) you can hear her as an instrument of the orchestra - at times a cello, a violin or a flute. And then it all becomes sublime.
I speak Italian fluently but can't understand a thing most opera singers sing. But I don't care either way. It's opera, so I don't expect to--and nor do most Italian actually XD
The problem with this discussion is that an opera is not an orchestral work; it is a work which must combine theater and music in a special way. This can be done only by at least some conveying of the meaning [story wise and emotional] of what is being sung. Sutherland did that most of the time prior to moving to singing only with Bonynge conducting. Her diction was also good enough [I do speak Italian] in that pre-Bonynge period as well as you can hear in track 11 [the Ah! strano...A for'se...Sempre libera]. Bonynge had neither the theatrical sensibility nor the conducting skills to support Sutherland in full operatic [rather than just musical] interpretation of the music that she sang [purely musically] better than anyone else.
Ole Nielson my dad said she had an incredible voice in her prime. She could sing the phone book. But her diction was not that good. But you can't have it all only la Divina. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

FYI: Many of these beautiful costume designs for Dame Joan were by my excellent colleague Michael Stennet. We created two productions together for Dame Joan with me as the designer for sets and he for costumes. One was "Lucrezia Borgia" from ROH in the famed production by John Copley with Alfredo Kraus as Gennaro and the Lotfi Mansouri production of "Anna Bolena" for Canadian Opera. (www.johnpascoe.com)
John Pascoe yes your productions were wonderful.
It is too bad that this post does not have Sutherland's "Santo di Patria" [early Verdi] or "Ocean thou mighty monster" [von Weber at his best composition] or any of the Cleopatra arias from Handel's opera or the "Je suis Titania" or Ximene's aria from the French album. Each of these shows a wider view of Sutherland's vocal/dramatic combination. Indeed, it is unlikely that a more perfect [both vocally and dramatically] version of Santo di Patria will ever be recorded.
You're 100% correct. For years I’ve been posting compilations on RUclips and there's always something I regret not having included, Santo di Patria and Beatrice di Tenda in Joan Sutherland’s case are two examples. I wish RUclips would let us edit videos after they're published. If someone knows if that’s possible, please let me know.

LOL. I love Maria, but Sutherland's instrument had no peers. Callas said as much herself listening to a dress rehearsal of Lucia..."this isn't good" she said. "You don't think so?" her companion asked. "It's too good" came Callas's answer.
