I have played the cello. I even attempted parts of the solo. I have listened to the traditional version many times. This performance with 4 cellos supporting the soloist is heavenly !!!
Awesome! Wonderful performance by all 5. Beautiful job of arranging so that it doesn't sound muddy / over-bassy; it must have been a gargantuan project! Just wondering, it sounds like one of the cellos is tuned down, eg at 11:32 - sounds like a low E (and B) in double bass territory. Is this correct?
There are a few passages where it does indeed sound muddy. Most notably the Coda of the Finale, which simply lacks the clarity of the upper register represented by the Trumpets.
