Insta 360 Go 2, why I DON'T recommend it. (For FPV)

  • The new Insta360 Go 2...
    This tiny new action camera has been getting a lot of rave reviews.
    So I bought it hoping it maybe a good option to mount on lightweight FPV quads, buuuuuut then I tested it... :(
    It is not a terrible camera, but I do get terrible results for FPV. I mounted it on three different quads, in a multitude of different ways, but I had jello issues every single time.
    Handheld it is great.
    Great stabilisation, pretty good image quality, lightweight and easy to use.
    Just don't buy it for FPV unless you quad has a perfect tune and a amazing vibration dampened mount.
    I put it side by side with my hero 8 black, in 4k and in 2,7k 50fps.
    with and without reelsteady, and tested every mode available on the insta 360 go 2.
    Beta 95X v3
    iflight bumblebee
    iflight DC5
    It seems I had some comments are regarding mount method.
    I did clearly explain that I tried a multitude of mounting ways, but to explain further.
    Types of mounts I tried. -
    Vertical in TPU mount, (screwed into plastic base plate)
    Horizontal wrapped in foam sponge, rubber banded down to top of frame.
    Velcro straps tight onto separate platform, which was suspended above frame on rubber isolation grommets.
    Zip tied to plastic platform, that was on rubber grommets isolated from frame.
    Fat rubber bands tight to top of insulated GoPro case (which itself was sat on soft foot mount)
    And I also tried to hard mount it zip tied only.
    I mounted it in multiple ways.
    On three completely different quads.
    Each time I had either some jello, or lots of jello.
    The go pro H8, on each drone, on any mount, had no jello.
    UPDATE - I HAD MANY PEOPLE TELLING ME I NEEDED TO MOUNT VERTICAL (I DID) AND USE NDs ETC... AND THEN THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEM, I DID ALL OF THE ABOVE, HERE IS A UNLISTED FOLLOW UP VIDEO THAT SHOWS THE BEST CASE SCENARIO... AND THE LEVEL OF UNWANTED ARTEFACTS EVEN WITH MY BEST 360 GO2 RESULTS-

    Update number 3.
    I will upload a new vid that covers general use.
    I have now used it for -
    Kitesurfing (in ocean/ water sports)
    Mountain biking
    Motorbike
    And family/general use.
    It has pros and cons for all.
    But certainly the jello issue isn’t a big problem for general use unless hard mounted to a shaky object. (Like bike handlebars etc)

    This is a perfect mini camera that will fit in places the Gopro doesn’t. The image quality is absolutely commensurate with the size of the sensor, and its stabilization is beyond expectations. Who doesn’t need it, don’t use it, but I think it’s no weaker than the approx. four times bigger and more expensive Gopro. :)

    I’m using it for my IG reel and quick behind the scene street photography and it is perfect for that - walking around and snapping quick video here and there. if your purpose is similar to mine it is a beautiful little discrete camera if not better invest in a gopro or something else but so far no complaints - it is quick, easy as well fun.

    UPDATE NUMBER 2 (19th March 2021) = Insta have just contacted me and sent me a beta version of the latest firmware update that will be out soon.
    So it will have 24 and 25fps as soon as that version is released, and they advised me as to the best settings to minimise jello... (use 30fps and not 50fps etc) But I am sad to say I just tested it again on 2 of my drones, and there is still jello, and thats with a grey dull day, so it will be even worse on a sunny day. Certainly using ND8 or ND16 does massively reduce jello, as my follow up video shows. But there is still some jello even then, and its now combined with motion blur artefacts, in every flight and combination of settings/mount/ND no ND/Drone etc that I tried.
    Simply put, as far as I can tell, its the speed it reads from the whole sensor that is the issue, when it comes to HF vibrations.
    Personally I do not think any FW update will fix this, but I am happy to try any newer firmware Insta sends me.

    • @poviliuxss
      @poviliuxss 3 года назад

      probably should get a proper mount for it too... as the strapping with rubber bands doesn't look like secure and stable mounting ... jello could be from that too ... as its mostly the case ...

    With a ND16, 30fps and the FPV-Stabilization in Studio 2021 my vid looked almost jello-free. I think this can be quite improved a bit still in firmware. I agree, there might be a slow reading speed out of the sensor to blame for this to happen at all though. Let's see how much they can fix that. I really love that cam a lot for my tinyhawks.

I did test MULTIPLE ways of mounting the Go2, and I also tried it on 3 completely different quads. All of which my hero 8 has zero jello issues with, but all of which the Go2 did have jello issues with. Very to the point review. That said, not everyone is using an action cam for FPV drone view. Also, RUclips does push your video to non-drone users so not everyone knows the context just seeing from your title. It will be great if you can change the title to “not recommended for drone FPV”. There had been people using it to quite some success in some relatively high vibration situations (well, I suppose Mountain Biking is still way less vibration than drone applications).
    Similarly, I don’t think your repeated assertion that most those people who like the camera are paid by insta is necessary. Some might just have a different use case compared to you and encounters the camera’s limitations less than you do. It is also possible that they are more excited by the possibility the small form factor provides and are less held back by the camera’s compromises.

    Not sure about best ways to mount. I have seen several reviews where they either printed their own mount or ordered a GoPro style mount for it and put it in their quad. The footage in those reviews looked solid to me. It definitely has as many negatives as positives overall, but most should know that before buying, such as the "no SD card" limited storage, and limited battery. Good review, but I think you can still find a solution to reduce the jello.. I'm pretty sure its still how you are mounting it.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      I put a list of all the mounts tried in description.
      Had it weeks now and tried it every which way.
      Only way to reduce jello is use strong NDs.
      And that can still give the odd jerk and flutter.
      Also tried it on 4 different quads now.
      You can get good results.
      But it’s not consistently my good.
      Never had one entire flight without some small issue.
      GoPro is much much more resilient and consistently reliable.
      So for me it’s not worth the risk of ruining a perfect flight footage because of a over sensitive camera.

    ok so basically what this video is telling me is go ahead and buy an insta go 2; ironically your review which was made as a caution for potential buyers, is the one video that convinced me that it is pretty darn good about not overexposing hehe. my only hold up is that i’m not used to spending money on gadgets. i’m still debating whether i should buy it new, or buy a used older model. all i want it for is recording five minute videos on my random slow bike rides and upload them on instagram without needing a computer. so in a sense i can whip out my phone and record in ultrawide, but i can only do this in certain situations and i would like to have a more consistent angle so that my insta posts are more similar in style with just the scenery changing.

    In my opinion it's a gimmick I neat toy for select situations...... I can barely get more than 10 minutes out of it without it overheating.
    The battery lasts maybe 15 minutes when you're actually using it as an action camera with rocksteady and her eyes until.
    About the only way I can get it till maybe last a little bit longer as if I don't connect it to my phone and I place it on the windshield with the defroster on AC cooling it for a time-lapse / driveing dashcam video
    The whole reason I purchase it was because I felt it would be more discreet which it is and as long as you can film what you need in less than 5 or 10 minutes that's great .

    Not trying to be critical or anything but out of curiosity, why is it that every reviewer that did not get a certain item for free to review always lay claim to have the most honest review? From what I've noticed also is that all the so called "honest" reviews are always negative. It's pretty weird to say the least. As I read the comments it's like most everyone seem to be people who are actively looking for a reason not to get the camera. It's like they've already convinced themselves even before seeing your video that they hate the camera and simply used your review as approval to judge after the fact. Yeah, some reviewers may be biased because they received a product for free but that does not mean they all are.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      I bought the product early. And at that point every single review I had watched was overwhelmingly positive and only showing the positives.
      So when I received it I was pretty disappointed with the products performance.
      Then when I rewatched the reviews trying to figure out what they were doing wrong I noticed how short the FPV clips were they choose to add. Clearly editing around issues. Or leaving them in in parts and simply not talking about them.
      So yes I felt lied to by a bunch of shills that had been paid for their reviews. (They didn’t just get them free but were paid.)
      Since uploading a negative take on the camera insta have been pretty forceful in attempting to remove my review. They offered “sponsorship” and support with free products if I removed my review.
      So I can see why there are so few bad reviews. They have a very aggressive team that put a lot of money into creating good reviews.
      I told them those were the results I got.
      But offered to do lots more lengthy testing using the exact settings and mount etc they recommended.
      But the results were still poor.

    The real question is why are you comparing the latest go2 with gopro 8 weight when the latest gopro offering is gopro 9 which is clearly bigger and heavier and also more expensive. Also please tell us how many times did you have to take out the battery out from the gopro 8 as it is bugged as hell and freezing constantly even during recording. You should explain your comparisons in your videos, so it looks like an honest review. Not everyone is reading your updates in the comments section. Now I don’t know if you are great honest youtuber or not.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      I did a video previously why the 9 isn’t worth the upgrade from 8 for FPV.
      For real steady use (best results that way)
      They require 4:3 AR.
      The hero 9 doesn’t upgrade 4:3. So same quality as H8. (5k only for 16:9)
      I had H9 and didn’t need it.
      So I’m comparing the current best option for FPV to the go2.
      I’ve never had freezing issues with my hero 8.
      I’ve heard others say that so I know it’s a thing.
      But never had that problem myself.
      And owned 3 of them now.
      (Always shoot in 4k 25 fps or 2.7k 50 fps)
      So maybe it’s certain settings that cause freeze.

    Did you alter the propeller number on your quads to minimize or alter the resonant vibration frequency? Maybe try a 5 or six bladed prop to see if that helps. Increasing the resonant frequency may alter how jello manifests. Is it possible that the jello is from the internal board with accelerometer not isolated from case? would it be worth attempting an open up to determine source? Would an algorithm upgrade allow for specific FPV Drone filter of resonance? Dunno. Thanks for the video. I wonder if a silicone fluid adhesive RTV type injected into the case would dampen the micro vibrations. It would be interesting to measure the frequency that elicits it. Great feedback thanks again for your review.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      I really think it’s just down to the speed it reads from the sensor.
      Bit too slow, so camera movement can happen before it reaches the bottom of sensor.
      But no I didn’t change props.
      End of day each of my quads give the hero 8 no problems at all (even in bright sunlight with NO ND. )
      So it’s just not worth the hassles or trying to use the go2 and having a constant struggle with jello.
      If you look at my follow up vid (link above) u can see it’s passable with a ND filter. But then y get motion blur artefacts. Which I also hate. But at least jello is gone.

    Funny!!! I'm also on the search for the holy grail (jello tolerant ultralight HD cam). Dont bother with the instaSMO 4k - been there - not goot. Also jello affine - even with ND filters (they send it out with ND16 F). Only works kinda well on 4" drones (guess the higher RPM creates higher frequ vibrations).
    Looks like only those naked gopro6s are an option...
    Nice to see you review it (and name it). Funny - after my negative review of the InstaOneR - Insta contacted me and now sent me the insta One X2 :) So they chase down every negative review ;)
    For me the best cam to fight jello has been the Gopro7 (and upwards) since their magic sauce in there really elimitates most jello even on my old, large prop Black Snapper (it has TONS of vibrations). greets from Austria, subbed immediatly, let me know when you find a good, small cam!!!

      4" is extremely smooth, the blackbox gyro tracks are the cleanest I've seen between 2-7" . . so it's easy to produce good footage with them. I think this cameras has either the lens or the sensor board inside the case loose, I've seen this behaviour on cameras that are broken like that many, many times. Didn't think they'd let SMO out like that, kinda sad to see a camera manufacturer doesn't build the cameras to the purpose they're selling them for.

      Yep this vid was specific for drones.
      Here is a follow up where I cover general use-

    could you test out not using the insta360 stabilization but rather use blackbox data to stabilize with reelsteady?

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      I shot in pro video mode. So that doesn’t stabilise in camera. (Used the insta app)
      I don’t think RS is compatible.
      Maybe it will be down the line. But not now as far as I’m aware.
      But the problem isn’t the stabilisation, it’s the rolling shutter. Stabilisation can’t fix that.

    Have you tried the FPV stabilization option in the program? because by other FPV videos they didn't seem to have such problems

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад +1

      Yes.
      And I’ve seen many other people with jello.
      They just haven’t highlighted it. (Not many of them at least.)
      Look at all the big vids on this that feature FPV
      (Potato jet etc)
      They all show jello. They just didn’t talk about it because they were being paid.
      There are a few with no jello. That’s either poor light or NDs.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      Here’s one I shot last night.
      So as you can see you can remove jello.
      But in poor light (as in this case)
      Or with ND.
      Shoot in sunlight with no ND and it’s problematic.

      I did clearly put on the screen what settings I was using. Says “FPV stab mode”

      Hero 8. Or if you need lighter then a naked hero 8 :)
      Best image quality for your bucks by far.
      (Especially when used with reel steady)
      Or if you want to save some money a hero 6 or session5

      @@biscuitsalive what about the insta 360 SMO? Gopro needs to be stripped.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      @@chrisbee5481 the image looks good.
      But I’ve heard that’s prone to jello too.
      (Will need NDs)
      And it’s not compatible to reelsteady. As far as I know.
      But I have seen people get good results from it.

    This stabilisation on the gopros and reel steady using the gyro data makes me wonder about if we can add gyro data to big cameras to get mad stabilisation that way

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  3 года назад

      They do. You can do that with several
      Cameras now. Eg the Sony a7siii.
      You have to speed shutter up. But yes you can stabilise in post just like reelsteady does for GP

    Nothing compares to GoPro on a quad. Even these big ass shendrone black magic RED setups don’t warrant enough better footage to justify the price tag. It’s like 10x the price for 5% better footage. Maybe it’s worth it for color grading alone, but even then GoPro flat is awesome. Here’s a thought though. Print a cage larger than the camera that has rubber band mounts. Then mount it in with like 5 rubber bands??? Just a random thought.

      The law of diminishing returns certainly does seem to drop down after GoPro quite sharply.
      Low light and difficult dynamic range is a weakness of the GoPro.
      And it would be great to see 10 bit colour in a new action camera.
      And perhaps a non fisheye but very wide option. (Do we didn’t need to correct bendy horizons digitally )

      @@biscuitsalive if DJI would partner with black magic they could have had a killer drone with the new FPV. Imagine if it filmed BRAw to an SD card.

      Read the description. Tried multiple mounts. Across multiple drones.
      All of which give GoPro no issues....
