    When I was 12 I had a sega CD and sonic CD and all I wanted for my birthday was This and Time Gal. Screenshots. Dont judge me, I had the magazines. I got them both - small town canada - my mom ordered them from a magazine. Road Blaster had no CD in it, my mom had to write them a letter. 6 weeks later it showed up in my mailbox in a CD Slip. I checked that box every day after school. Every time we ordered from that shop Id check the box every day after school. When I opened it up and saw a game inside I was so excited haha

      I never tired of playing this. Loved it. The tone was set by that opening mega cd song and then the ending felt meloncholy.
      Anyone remember the cheats? One was level select and one was for watching it as a movie with no HUD visible. Think one cheat was pushing A about 30 times in the options.... Might be wrong though

    We had a Thayer's Quest in our local arcade. I literally never saw anyone play it. Despite this, the game's keyboard was hopelessly worn, with what I assume to be a protective layer essentially gone. I watched the intro many times, and eventually worked my way through a let's play of the game on RUclips. Definitely the kind of game that simply would never have existed without Dragon's Lair.

    Data East also released the LD arcade game "Bega's Battle", which I saw in person in an airport arcade when I was barely old enough to remember things. It made an impression. If you want to see why, go look it up on RUclips. You'll see the attract mode. It shows a guy's face melting, complete with eyeballs popping out. All footage in the game was stolen from a movie called Harmageddon.

    • @JustinSevenTwo
      @JustinSevenTwo 2 года назад +2

      I believe it was actually licensed legally! But yes, all footage came from Genma Taisen Harmageddon... with character designs by Katsuhiro Otomo (creator of Akira)

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 2 года назад +2

      @@JustinSevenTwo I can believe that it was licensed since it was after all a Japanese game, but the nature of the usage of the footage, especially with the comically awful English dub and script ("last of the Earth warriors", "provide a barrier shield"), still very much smacks of what happened to Lupin in Cliff Hanger among others. They were just completely making stuff up, and I doubt the Japanese team had anything at all to do with the English. Of course the reason I brought the game up was because it was legitimately startling what I was seeing in an arcade cabinet, in a public venue. There's zero doubt in my mind that it was the most violent video game to exist when it was released, just because of that clip. Even back then, I found myself wondering how things would have turned out if, against all odds, that game had somehow ended up being really popular. (Rather than a blatant effort to make a quick buck off the LD craze started by Dragon's Lair.) Somebody would have noticed the attract mode.

    • @JustinSevenTwo
      @JustinSevenTwo 2 года назад +1

      @@Asterra2 Yeah I'd definitely agree with that... Really not a great use for that film or footage! Really just a backdrop for a second rate vertical shooter

    I had no idea the arcade version looked and sounded so much better than the Sega CD version. Crazy. I might have to go back and play it.
    It's hard to truly convey to younger gamers how absolutely mindblowing this game was coming off the SNES and Genesis.
    My memory of playing this game is still pretty vivid.
    It was a rainy afternoon and my mom had allowed me to rent it. When we got home she started watching Oprah and I didn't come put of my room for ages. Eventually my brother saw me playing the game and tried helping me out with the harder parts.
    I remember feeling distinctly engaged and immersed because of the visuals and pace of the game despite the limited gameplay control.

      @@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Strange, because I lived in Japan and studied Japanese, and also watched videos about Dragon Ball and such made by them, and it's always been "To" as in "toe" and "ei" as in the letter "A". "Toe - A". I mean, it may be very slightly different, but that's the English approximation. I'm not blaming your or anything, and think it's good that you went to some source, but, well...it's hard to say anything besides "That source is either wrong or what the source said was misinterpreted." Another quality review. Quick question--do you remember the name of this racing game in which you could choose an 18-wheeler, F1 race car, or standard car that scrolled upwards like Bump n' Jump EXCEPT you were wholly dependent on obtaining "energy" packs to continue the game? When energy is depleted the game audible tells you "I'm sorry to say, but you've run out of energy!" It is definitely late 80s and had a Neo-Geo feeling but pre-dates NG.

    It sort of looks like if they made a video game for The Wraith...

    Revolutionary Concepts did the HD release on iOS. Their port of Cobra Command HD is also excellent. I wish they were able to get to Time Gal. The iOS games no longer work since Revolutionary Concepts never updated the app to 32bit so they stopped working. Would be nice if someone open-sourced or ported it to 32bit.

    I actually prefer the alternative title Road Avenger, it's more fitting to the story of the game.

    Yeah I need to check out the Saturn or Super NES versions. Sorry I couldn't make it to MGC this year.
