He took his sound style from Jimi and the blues from Austin Texas, Antone's in particular. There was a version of "Further On Down The Road" by the Cobras floating around youtube a while back. Find it and hear the best Austin had and there was no shortage of the best there. And there is a just released documentary about Antone's and everyone is in it.

Grew up in west Texas and was watching SRV back in the 70's when he was with Lou Ann Barton & the Cobras and the Triple Threat Revue. He used to play Fat Dawgs in Lubbock when I was going to Texas Tech in the 80's. Man, we saw SRV so many times back then that--believe it or not--it became no big deal. When he cut his first album, then his second, Texas was big-time proud of him. We continue to mourn his loss to this day.

I have a feeling Stevie could be rustled out of bed, or walk in after a 12 hr overseas plane flight, or come in after hiking thru 10 miles of snow, be handed a guitar and he'd still be consistently amazing .. I love that I’ve heard so many great guitar players say that the music came to Stevie like a conduit; he was so fluid, never finding himself lost or wonting for a note. I’ve seen a million guitar players in person and online, and I see so many of them -yes, even the greats- just drowning in a song because they cannot vibe with it in that moment. I’ve just never seen that with Stevie. The SRV/Albert King session is like that- AK is an undisputed great, but he sounded completely lost trying to complement what Stevie played.

If there ever was a tragedy is losing SRV.
Was lucky enough to see him backing up Robert Plants,, Now and Zen tour. In Toronto May 11 1988. Stevie stole the show so big the next days newspapers, radio stations let everyone know. By the sound of the audience it was clear as well. I have the program and a couple of clippings from that night I'll never forget it.

Although, I think a few acts could've stolen the show from Plant on that tour. He was at his lowest, pushing his diet coke commercial POS song 'Tall Cool One'. You see him do that and wonder "WTF, Robert? You're gonna ruin the memory of Zepp if you keep that shit up." Probably because everyone sobered up, because the mid-late '80s was a bad time for lots of '70s rockers. Jagger & Bowie were 'Dancin in the Street' (and under the sheets). McCartney 'That Girl is Mine' with MJ. Jefferson Starship 'We Built this City', Genesis 'invisible Touch', David Coverdale - all of whitesnake. list goes on

Adolph "Bud" Herseth would often preach, "Never practice, always perform." The idea not being that you don't practice, but that at all times you do things at a performing level. This is to keep your head focused on performance. For those who don't know who he was, well, perhaps the greatest symphonic trumpet player ever. He was principle trumpet of the Chicago Symphony for 52 years.

  • @masterplots
    @masterplots 5 лет назад +14

SRV was probably the most overlooked guitar player. If you asked almost anyone to make a list of the best guitar players, chances are they are going to say, Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, May, Iommi, etc., etc. SRV is in a class of his own. If Stevie played Rock, the polls would change for sure. This is what a sound check should really be like. A band should go all out just like playing a live gig. It makes it easier for the sound crew to make adjustments. All of the good bands take sound check seriously.

When I saw him he apparently had finished with drugs, had gone through rehab after leaving a tour in Germany, (I think), and was clean, sober and playing better than ever. But hell, he was tearing it up since the early eighties. Sometimes when I watch these Stevie vids, I contemplate how he must have eaten, drank and breathed blues because, despite all his vices, he lived the best part of his passion. A maniac of pic up switching, amps, strats, effects, tone........ When I found out he died I ended up balling for a good 30 minutes. One of those cases where you identify with the loss. There is a great interview with Clapton talking about Stevie. Stevie was one of those forces that even the most recognized guitar gods state he had something that most just don't have. Wings, have you seen the Austin City Limits tribute to Stevie broadcast shortly after his death? Guy, King, Clapton, Papa John......they're all there and they talk about the kind of player he was. Check it out if you haven't seen it. Very cool.

For me it is an absolutely exquisite piece by a singer/song writer and guitarist par excellence and second only toJimi. It’s an evocative haunting melody with exquisite fills and angst-filled ‘tradin’ in pain’ lyrics. And it’s pure bliss - pure blues heaven !
I am hoping you too will find it so. The pleasure which you show at every 5* performance and your enduring enthusiasm enhance the re-listening experience fir us all and we get educated too !

What always amazed me watching this video is the fact that he looks like he just got out of bed, with a resonable hangover and the first song he plays is scuttle buttin"! I mean come on.. that lick is freakin' hard to play! I actually never heard anybody play it as smooth as SRV does...
    How is this possible???

    Scuttlebuttin' 🎸😉
After watching multitudes of vids of DT, each one many times over, for all of these years, it still gets to me the way Tommy, after playing with Stevie for years, would sometimes just watch him in amazement, like he was starstruck. So sweet 😊

I was very fortunate in the mid 1980's not sure the year but he warmed up for the Moody Blues the Present Tour in Dallas. Being from a town 15 minutes from where he lived in Oak Cliff, Tx we had never heard of him. Most warm up bands you want to get off the stage. We wanted him to stay on stage. While doing a solo he was sitting in the edge of the stage. We never forgot who he was after that. Dallas has had a lot of famous people coming from here. Stevie put Oak Cliff on the map. The city took way way too long to honor him. Now they have a rusted piece of metal honoring he and his brother. Nothing much but it is at least something.

Good Morning Fil, I hope this note finds u well...I hope ur taking precautions and not like a lot of Americans who walk around with not a care in the world, and guess what is happening? Covid-19 is hitting harder than ever. In my state of SC it has become a hot spot...so be well...and what a wonderful music rendition by one of my favorite blues players...SRV...I saw him out west a long time ago...it seems to me when an artist gets clean and tries to walk the straight and narrow, they die in horrific circumstances...RIP Mr. Vaughn, what a impeccable and tight blues player. I loved sound checks...I wrote many songs during sound checks. Stay well Fil...thanks again for the videos.

I was there.......that day. I'm captured in the video on the side of the stage......we were jamming just prior to what you see in this video on the side of the stage......I was playing his Charlie guitar. The video is from a TV news crew that came in to do a segment for the 6PM news here in Pittsburgh. They were star struck with Stevie......I had to get them autographs from Stevie. The RUclips posting of this is an edited version and not the raw tape in full.

Love the line about only Stevie could get away with running one lick 15 times without change. As a drummer who has played for 52 years in and around Austin, Texas and point beyond, got a little story from Austin in 1984. I was drinking a beer with Doug Sahm of the Sir Douglass Quintet at Antone's Club on Guadalupe down from the UT campas when SVR came up and drank a beer with us. He was the man of the house band at the time and that's the first and only time I ever met him. Such a nice, and cool dude and we laughed that he was from uptight Dallas, Texas. May he rest in peace and my wife and I contributed to the riverside statue in his honor on the banks of Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.

Stevie’s been my favorite guitarist since, well, the first time I ever heard him play. As a music lover with a focus on guitar and vocals, and with a deep adoration for blues in particular, I do believe had I ever had the chance to see him live would have been a high point in my life.
Can’t say that about any other live musical performance I’ve attended. I’ve seen live: Jethro Tull, Deep Purple (seated 30 feet in front of Blackmore...blew my ears out), Iron Maiden, Dio, Genesis (outstanding musicians), Rush (YYZ heard live...bliss), Pink Floyd, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ozzy Osborne w/ Randy Rhodes (yeah), Aerosmith, and Alice Cooper.
None of these were what I’d call a high point in my life. Good performances, especially Genesis, Deep Purple, Rush and Jethro Tull. But Stevie Ray Vaughan’s RUclips video performances are more valuable to me musically than any of those live performances.
    To see SRV live? Smh
Where’s his replacement? There isn’t one. Cheap knock offs at best.
3 acts that I’d like to go back in time to see:
    1) SRV
    2) Hendrix
    3) Robert Johnson
Better yet put all 3 of them up on stage together to collaborate ~ watch the world crack in half 🤣
Phil, have you ever heard of a more or less unknown guitar player called Edward Phillips? Look him up if you haven’t already. He covers the old blues guitarists WELL ! Does a lot of slide guitar on resonator guitars, old Parler guitars. Outstanding! Cross Road Blues, Dust My Broom, John Henry, etc. This guy has got some of the earliest blues techniques down pretty well and tight. Sounds so good. Never heard someone cover Robert Johnson so well. Check him out.

Have you seen David Gilmour playing sorrow on Fender 50th strat pack anniversary? I ask because I think it's the best version he's ever done and I love his red Strat sound some really good landing and takeoffs. I wouldn't say it's really technical but I think it's beautifull.
