Cost aside, to pour a suspended slab using hand mix will cause cold joints which which will compromise the integrity of the slab. Pre-mix using a pump to get that concrete in place as fast as possible is the only way to do it properly.

Excellent video, the price for the premix is good because on some sites the owner has to cook food and buy alcohol so the labor would be more if food and beverage are included.

I use pre mix for 3 floor of my house and it’s faster time. I think it’s more expensive. But it way less headache and

Sounds like a typical construction site in Jamaica. Pouring not only saves you from that experience but you definitely will get a more consistent pour which is less likely to leak. All the best with your project.

For a driveway or sidewalk, light duty, then 5 bags cement per cubic yard might be OK but, for a strong deck you usually want 6-7 bags of portland per cubic yard, 6 being most common. Most premix that I have talked with brag that they use 7 bag mix through the pumps..
you save on pre-mix because you do not spend as much on labour, or food for labour, or time moving it or rented buckets and barrows. No rum buying. No cussing usually. and at least the white river and ocho rios companies both are done quickly. I use steel props for a week, then interspace with bamboo, and wood props that I leave longer.
3000 psi is 6 bag concrete-- or bag concrete, barrow sand, barrow grit or gravel.. add plasticisor to it if you need extra time.
2500 psi is standard mix- bag concrete, barrow sand, barrow and a half of gravel. 2000 is extra half barrow gravel.
Cut the water added by using plastcizers to the mix to reduce the water, as water decreases strength.
final note- every other prop can be removed after 1 week on most mixes. After two weeks, most props can be removed if not loading deck above, but, if loading or building on deck above really should leave the props for 30 days. I normally use bamboo or wood props for the main (30 day) props and rent the ones that go between so I can turn them back to rental sooner. As long as ends of supports are tied to outer walls, you may be able to strip all props by end of week 2, then strip the forms after 3-4 weeks.. Now, when I did commercial work that combined plasticisor with quickeners and concrete glass fibre reinforcement as well, we poured today, stripped 80% of the forms tomorrow, moving them upstairs, and setting up deck 3 with forms from deck 1, etc.. so by the time we got to deck 5 we were totally stripped on deck 1, with crews laying in electrical and plumbing there, and strippers were finishing form stripping on deck3, and support stripping finals on deck 2, and support first strip on deck 4.. but that was some massive and quick work, nothing like here in Jamaica.
@@brotheradam those reasons are very important in going the premix avenue, especially the rum buying. Lol. Interesting mix of the props usage btw, thats a good way to have them up longer while controlling cost. We did leave up some of our support while building above until we needed the forms to create the other deck. The commercial build sound exciting and fast paced, lots of coordination also. I have watched a few overseas building approach and thats how they do it to save time, every 12 hour they can pour a deck with the additives and support
@@brotheradam Thanks for this breakdown to achieve the psi strength needed, I am not sure if many workmen follow these ratio. For out foundation which we did manual mix, we used 1.5 bags of cement per barrow as we wanted a strong mix and high psi

I went with premix to deck my house 🏠 in June,I'm running from inconsistent of manually mixing. Trying to avoid alot of roof leaking down the road.
Thats one of the main reason when you are decking, you want to maintain the consistency of the mixture and want everything to dry at the same time to help minimize cracks. If not properly cured, even premix can still leak.

Agree. Nobody should go through what I did with a leaked and sweaty slab roof from cold joints with manual mixing. I will always encourage everyone to use premix for foundations and slab roofs.

Hey. You can try pouring another layer of concrete and ensure you water it. We also used roof compound and thinest on ours to seal it. Theres also a a water proofing membrane that is usually used in the shower floor that you can try.
Lots of options. All the best with fixing it. A leaky roof can be a nightmare.

@@paulostyles9484 you can definitely try the roof membrane that they use a torch to burn onto the deck and also seal it with the compound in the joints. The roof compound also works if you apply multiple coats on the concrete.

Whats your thoughts on ICF building method? Thats the foam construction.
We started doing some research on it before we started our renovation but I didn’t get enough details about doing a 2 storey building with it and also our building plans weren’t approved for that method. Hopefully in the future we will have a project using the ICF method.
The headache with manual mixing is the main drawback, but it's much cheaper.

Glad you found the video helpful. The dimensions are 11 feet x 27 feet plus we poured the belting with the premix and a few of the columns.

What's the best advice to give when building
Theres so much but building isnt easy and there will be many challenges. Just stY the course and try to find workers you can trust, get referrals if you have to.
Labor cost yes - the unfortunate reality is that I you don't have a watchman in most locations, your material will go missing. I cost you forgot

They rent other construction equipment as well and they are a shipping company. I guess it probably their marketing strategy. Not sure how it works for them.

Its A1 equipment rentals.
Good channel but you need to research the terms a little more. The method is called ready mix. Premix is the name of the company and it's not manual decking it's called hand mix placing. Also the methods of ratio is incorrect in the lab and that has been established it's 7-8 bags cement per cubic yard. 5 will be on the weak side lastly not reigning on your channel but u have to understand that you have other professionals that will view your channel so just have an open mind
Hello John. Thanks for your input here. This may be a case of “doctors differ, patients die”. On a more serious note, our research is correct that to get 3000 psi strength 5-6 bag of cement per cubic yard is acceptable, with the correct ratio of water plus the sand (binding agent). 7-8 bags with less water and less sand would give a mix closer to 4000 psi strength which is definitely stronger. So all depends on what you’re going for.
Also, no hard feelings at all we are always open to suggestions. The goal is to learn daily so we can share and help others.
